I just bought a house that was built in 1952 and all your videos have been EXTREMELY helpful in all the DIY reno projects that I have been trial-and-erroring my way through. The information, pace, camera angles, lighting, and demonstrations that you guys do in your videos are second to none. I especially liked your video on installing a hanging ceiling, and doing kitchen wiring. Many thanks! HouseImprovements has saved me loads of time, money, effort, and frustration. I hope you guys keep making vids.
that's awesome. We try to pay attention to all details because bad lighting or audio can really take away from good instruction. Be sure to subscribe if you're not and stay tuned for lots more videos coming this year.
Thanks for the video. I bought my house three years ago from an elderly man that was in a nursing home. I see my roof vents where done incorrectly and I will get water in my kitchen every so often. This video will help me fix those. Thanks again from the U.S.
Thanks Shanon from a grateful Gringo. You Canadians are our perfect neighbors, so meticulous, so experienced, so confident in world class infrastructure ventures. I see your homes when I visit every part of your country and am filled with envy and admiration. Every part of your residential and commercial zones sticks out as so modern and classy compared to US, Europe, Australia, Japan. Non like some of our run down dilapidated, boarded up , 3rd world areas. .
We thank you for the compliment... but believe me when I say we have a long way to go. Stay in the right areas and everything looks great, but go looking for dark places and you can find them here, too. Naturally, we have a pretty wide spectrum when it comes to economic status, but we try to reduce poverty as much as possible with social programs. Not everyone agrees, although it's shown that reducing crippling poverty has benefits that can actually reduce the overall cost of things such as crime and mental health. Help others and you will help yourself :)
Dude I loved how you used a square and a little piece of plywood to cut on it makes nice looking work it’s how our younger guys need to do it until they get better at making straighter freehanded cuts without also cutting through the finished roof ;)
HouseImprovements You can stop the flow pressing the metal locker. The locker that free the hook back on the pistol/pumper. Pressing the locker we can stop the flow and I use a nail or a screw to lock the tip. Thank you for the video. I'm looking for videos to teach me to frame roofs, calc the rafters cutting... I would thank you so much for your help.
Perfect timing for this video! I need to put a couple roof vents on a shed I just had built. You wouldn't believe how hard it is to find a proper video for roof vent installations! Thanks again.
If you nail a receiver to the first shingle-cut. It will have a lip that will capture the bottom of the vent. No nails through bottom of vent once done. I use three 4” pieces of Aluminum or copper for my receiver. I nail it to roof at marked location for a 1/4 lap ( bend over ) at bottom of vent , Mark location of vent nail receiver first hanging down past your marked location. seal with putty, install vent as you have. Only difference is I do not nail vent at the bottom. I fold over 3 tabs on my receiver. Basically flat strip that hangs past vent and fold over to capture vent bottom Hope that explains to a novice. I only have one roof left to finish ( mine ) and my 40 year roofing career is done. Mainly commercial jobs. Enjoyed your video.
Great video! I’m a home inspector and you made it so easy to understand venting (1sf = 300sf) approx. and I know what to look for as far as how install should look. I’m a new subscriber and can’t wait to learn more from you. Thanks 🙏
This video is just super. Very well explained. I shingled my own roof and now doing other friends and family's roofs. Thanks Shannon. Your are a great mentor.
Those black jack tar tubes just never stop pouring out! Hahah, you know exactly what im talking about cause you kept the tube under shingles when not in use.
I cracked open my very first ever tube of this stuff today as I replaced my very first every three-tab shingle. I underestimated how much was going to come out... and I didn't have gloves on... and I didn't have a cloth or paper towel... and my spouse didn't appreciate my disturbing her hammock nap as I yelled at her in a panic to climb the ladder with paper towel to throw up the roof to me.
Make sure you don't cut into any rafters under the decking. You can drill 4 pilot holes at each of the corners of your needed opening from the underside of the decking and then saw from above. Sawing from the inside means having to cut holding the saw above you- not the safest or easiest position.
these shingling videos have been a great help.. thank you for making them !! i just dont know how you can work without kneepads tho lol... guess youre still young !!
Great job i need to install a vent in shingles I appreciate your video and you can not please every one there is always at least one Jackass!!!! Out there always will be! Thanks for the video
Thank you for the video, very informative. At 9:10 you put a shingle edge (left side) over a nail in the previous layer. Since the shingle edge does not keep water from the previous layer in the joint area wouldn't this be akin to putting in a shiner and thereby allowing water to pass over and seep through that nail hole below the shingle edge?
just installed a new roof and roof vent on my 16' shed... i forgot to put a bead of caulk around the attic vent... guess ill have to try to add it tomorrow.... thanks for all of the videos
Awesome video. Thank you for posting. Does it matter if these vents are covered in snow? My roofer installed these on garage and noticed that they’re mainly covered with snow in winter when we get big snow falls.
Why did you run sealent on the bottom edge of the vent? If condensate builds up it has no where to go but pool and get back into the attic... Seems to me it would have made more sense to leave the bottom edge of the vent free to allow condensate to run out and away. Does this style of vent act differently then say a bathroom or cooking shroud vent?
Nice work. I feel like I could go out and do this without too much problem. I just need to decide about the bottom of the vent for my area as far as seal & nails with respect to rain and wind.
my question is why he didnt put the bottom nails on the top insted the bottom by doing it like that he is giving a chance to leak in the future. thanks
A good vent that is metal and not plastic and an adhesive that doesn't get brittle and crack. Three nails through the top of the vent that will be covered, a nail on each side but not in the metal just use the head of the nail to pinch down on the vent and a little bit of pro flex sealant adhesive. I didn't have a single vent come off during hurricane Irma.
Never nail the bottom! Only dumb dumbs do that. Edit. The bottom of the vent should be even with the row of shingles. It hides nails and looks better and Also seals lol have a good day
john kusher It's funny how many so called roofers put exposed nails on the bottom of vents and pipe flashings or boots. I'm a Brick Mason and know better just from doing some research and knowing how I deal with flashing on the job. I couldn't agree with your statement more.
Just curious - would securing lower exposed part of vent with screws be better than nails? I have a vent that was secured with nails - the nails got loose and water started leaking in. I replaced nails with screws.
Very nice video. Question I have is: If I was going to install ridge vents along the peak to help with the venting, would I still have to install these types of vents? Thank you
Nice work. I have a leaking vent and wonder if it needs to be replaced and I would have to replace those shingles at that level and above or could just use better roof silicone adhesive or tar at the bottom lip where it is coming in by the vent hole. It is only one out of about 6 that is doing this. I would have thought it would have some better design with a dome. Just seeing it from the inside where the insulation in the attic was softned.
Not too relevant to what the video is about but how do you recommend on putting a bathroom vent in, I have a steel roof and brick should I just go through the brick? The people that came to install one said they couldn't do it not sure if they were just being lazy or actually couldn't do it.
I have problems with the air vents in my house when it snows a lot of snow is located in Iowa which air vent can you recommend like the one used in the video how to install roof vent thank you
So when you measure from the peak, is that to the center of the vents or the top? I re-sheated my roof and I'm ready for shingles, I'm installing 8 vents on a a 3/12 pitch roof.
Is the nail sticking under the ceiling, I am trying to do this on my patio roof and I don’t what to do to avoid the nail being shown under the ceiling? Any suggestion?
Nothing, no need when rafters are 2' Centers. If they were over that you would secure in some 2x material under the sheathing to support it. One below the hole and one above , right from one rafter to the other.
I think I watched all your videos and it helped me do the entire basement myself. Now I just did my roof and added a ridge vent. I added a stove vent and it says no tar or cement. Do you know why they specify that cause all videos people installing a vent always put tar
Curious about placement for multiple vent installation. If my calculation based on square footage yields 6 vents should i stagger them out on along the gable? Specifically if i do 3 on one side should they be parallel to each other or would it be best to alternate placement on either side of the roof. Eg, one side put a set at the 10, 30, 50 foot mark. Then the other side put a set at the 5, 20, 40 foot mark as a rough estimate.
How come you don't caulk under the vent on the paper at the top? Or how come you don't put top of vent under paper? As water runs down paper (if it gets there) wouldn't it go under metal and in to vent hole? Thx!!

After watching your simple instructions, I think I'm going to replace my old roof vents myself, thank you
Thanks for the video. I bought my house three years ago from an elderly man that was in a nursing home. I see my roof vents where done incorrectly and I will get water in my kitchen every so often. This video will help me fix those. Thanks again from the U.S.

I don't know why people gave him thumb down as a homeowner I find his videos are very helpful.
Because he is doing it wrong. He is doing the worst mistake in asphalt shingling which having nails where two shingles butt together.
Dude I loved how you used a square and a little piece of plywood to cut on it makes nice looking work it’s how our younger guys need to do it until they get better at making straighter freehanded cuts without also cutting through the finished roof ;)
To stop the *glue flow* just press the *locker* back the pistol.
*Thanks for our amazing videos and services!*
yes I realize that but you usually still get a little flow after wards. thanks for watching
HouseImprovements You can stop the flow pressing the metal locker. The locker that free the hook back on the pistol/pumper.
Pressing the locker we can stop the flow and I use a nail or a screw to lock the tip.

Congratulations on your retirement. Is there a picture of your concept anywhere?

Thanks, good luck with your projects
Thanks so much for posting. I will tackle this since I am at home during COVID-19.
Thank you Shannon for showing me how to install a roof vent properly. Now, I'm not so intimidated.
Thank you for getting the wood plank out of the attic! A small thing, but shows pride of work.
You bet!
your video was so helpful. I was able to install the vent with ease.
Those black jack tar tubes just never stop pouring out! Hahah, you know exactly what im talking about cause you kept the tube under shingles when not in use.
I cracked open my very first ever tube of this stuff today as I replaced my very first every three-tab shingle. I am about to do my own roof for the first time. Thanks for these videos very helpful.
Make sure you don't cut into any rafters under the decking. You can drill 4 pilot holes at each of the corners of your needed opening from the underside of the decking and then saw from above. Sawing from the inside means having to cut holding the saw above you- not the safest or easiest position.
most of us would just set our circular saw depth so cutting below the plywood would be an impossibility
Excellent video helps a lot doing my roof at the moment .
Excellent description and clear presentation. Thanks
Perfect video! I’m just about ready to install my vents.
these shingling videos have been a great help.. thank you for making them !! i just dont know how you can work without kneepads tho lol... guess youre still young !!
Nice and clearly explained, good video
I love your videos. Very professional and on topic! You, sir have got yourself a long term subscriber.
Awesome. We've got more videos scheduled so stay tuned!
Thanks!
Thank you for the donation! Merry Christmas
Very nice Shannon...No wonder you got a quarter million people following ya......
Thanks a lot, I wish that my roofer did it that way. I’m patching up the leaks myself because I want it done right!
As usual your video is excellent. I appreciate the advice.
Great job i need to install a vent in shingles I appreciate your video and you can not please every one there is always at least one Jackass!!!! Out there always will be! Thanks for the video
You got a new subscriber ,i like your channel , 👍🏻
Thank you! Will definitely return to your site for more instruction.
This guy cracks me up... most what he does should be labeled “ what not to do “
Very clearly explained. Thanks for your help (and confidence) to do this for the first time.
snowventco roof vents stops all snow and rain, it is a new invention
Thank you for the video, very informative. At 9:10 you put a shingle edge (left side) over a nail in the previous layer. Since the shingle edge does not keep water from the previous layer in the joint area wouldn't this be akin to putting in a shiner and thereby allowing water to pass over and seep through that nail hole below the shingle edge?
yes yes yes, horrible. Do not follow this video.
I wish when you post a video that you would name the parts used and where to get the part. Maybe you get bonus points from MFG.
Life saver! Thank you.
Great job . Thank you for sharing this wonderful video with us
just installed a new roof and roof vent on my 16' shed... i forgot to put a bead of caulk around the attic vent... guess ill have to try to add it tomorrow.... thanks for all of the videos
Awesome! Thanks Shannon. I have to install a bathroom vent in my roof so I expect it it a very similar process.
basically the same but the vent is specific for bath fan.
Thanks a lot. I have some leaking vents so now I have an idea of how to replace them!
Great job, man. Thanks so much!
Just did one my self, thanks so much for you explanation 🙏🙏👏👏👏👏👏
GOOD MORNING SHANNON, THANKS FOR THE VIDEO,, DO YOU HAVE A VIDEO WHERE YOUR CUTTING IN A VENT IN AN EXISTING SHINGLE ROOF/?
No, sorry
VERY NICE WORK...VERY CLEAN........MY WORK WAS LEAK PROOF .....BUT THAT TAR GOT REALLY MESSY......LIVE AND LEARN I GEUSS
Awesome video. Thank you for posting. Does it matter if these vents are covered in snow? My roofer installed these on garage and noticed that they’re mainly covered with snow in winter when we get big snow falls.
That does happen and most people dont get up there to uncover them. In most cases its really not a problem in winter

Seems to me it would have made more sense to leave the bottom edge of the vent free to allow condensate to run out and away. Excellent video
Very informative vids! Keep up the great work!
thanks
Squirrels gnawed on my pvc roof vents to access the attic... I’m replacing it with metal - thanks how it’s done correctly!
Nice work. I feel like I could go out and do this without too much problem. I just need to decide about the bottom of the vent for my area as far as seal & nails with respect to rain and wind.
Guys you have just bow my mind ..looking forward to be in apprenticeship program
another great video
what kinda of fasteners did you put through the shingles with the gun? that sorta info would be very valuable to you audience. thanks for the video
my question is why he didnt put the bottom nails on the top insted the bottom by doing it like that he is giving a chance to leak in the future. thanks
what will hold the bottom of the vent down then?
A good vent that is metal and not plastic and an adhesive that doesn't get brittle and crack. jhossy Flores you cover bottom nails with mastic when done

Once you've installed the vent and the shingles are on. Do you have to Tar around the seams of the shingles?
no.
Just curious - would securing lower exposed part of vent with screws be better than nails? I have a vent that was secured with nails - the nails got loose and water started leaking in. I replaced nails with screws.
Can't hurt
Excellent work. Thanks for posting!
Thank you
Is this in Winnipeg? Sure looks like it
Great video. Informative and very helpful. Thanks and keep it up!
Your a badass, I wish you were down here in Houston lol. Id hire you for everything. Very knowledgeable
Very nice video. Question I have is: If I was going to install ridge vents along the peak to help with the venting, would I still have to install these types of vents? Thank you
Why not notch out the first overlapping shingle as well?
Very informative video. Thank you.
Is there a rule of thumb how many feet below ridge one should make a hole to install a vent?
you want them in the upper 1/4 of the roof. The higher the better usually but keep them at least a couple rows down from top.

The less penetrations in a metal roof the better,so out the wall or eave would be better.
I have problems with the air vents in my house when it snows a lot of snow is located in Iowa which air vent can you recommend like the one used in the video how to install roof vent thank you

Awesome video. Very detail.
thanks
Forever Grateful I
Helpful thanks 👍
Great video as usual!
What did you do to repair those two planks that you cut on the wrong side of the rafter?
Nothing, no need when rafters are 2' Centers. If they were over that you would secure in some 2x material under the sheathing to support it. One below the hole and one above , right from one rafter to the other.
Thanks!! I have to change my roof next month Sept-October? It doesnot have vents, I have to install it
Great video Shanon. Thank you
you are welcome
Or you use gasket screws?
I think I watched all your videos and it helped me do the entire basement myself. Now I just did my roof and added a ridge vent. I added a stove vent and it says no tar or cement. Do you know why they specify that cause all videos people installing a vent always put tar
I wish there was somebody I could call if I had roofing questions
Very helpful thanks
Remember to double check your rafters spacing/ roof structure inside the attic so you dont cut it!
good job
What kind of roof is that? Looks like a peak? Or a steep drop off? ty
can you please tell me where you purchased the roof vent from?
Great video. Thanks for the help.
They need to be spaced out somewhat even and can be even all on the same side of ridge.
What do you think about ridge venting?
Ridge venting is a perfectly fine alternative. Keep the roof plywood cut back about 3'' each way of the ridge and install.
wouldnt you want more intake vents then exhust vents?
actually you want them split evenly.
How come you don't caulk under the vent on the paper at the top? Or how come you don't put top of vent under paper? As water runs down paper (if it gets there) wouldn't it go under metal and in to vent hole? Thx!!
Thanks for sharing
How far from the eve of the roof should a turtle vent be installed?
Normally about 2-3 courses below the ridge of the roof to the top of vent.
my shingles don't have the tar strip at the edge of the pattern, only at the top and I'm where you are in the video with a little going over to the other side. Is that ok or do I need to run a bead of tar or remove 1 row of shingles so I have a tar strip for the cap. Hope you understand that.
You will be fine to leave it.
I have seen a few of your videos. I have this same project to install more vents in my house. I am wondering why the tar bead is not put on the vent all the way around on the bottom portion when you first lay it down.
It is applied on the bottom area?
vents actually say right on them that tar should not be applied to them. but I always do and have never, ever had any problems.
are they the best kind of vents or are the whirly birds better?
both work
I didn't catch it in the video, but why do you want the bottom lip to be exposed instead of placing it under the shingles as well?
Just hire a roofer man... You don't know what the Fuck your doing... Neither does the dumbass in the video
great video, in fact all your videos are really informative. I wonder if its possible for you to show how to install a vent from a microwave (above a stove) and route it through the roof and outside.
We may do one sometime but its not going to be anytime soon sorry
+HouseImprovements that's ok, no rush.
What about if I have a insulated attic with play wood ? What’s my option do I have to take that out in order to have a complete opening into the vent??
Yes, the vent needs an open space into the whole attic. You only need to remove insulation below the opening.
great video, many thanks.
You are welcome
