  • How do we confront illness and death? We will all experience them, but often don't want to contemplate them. I'll discuss some recent RUclips channels that have dealt with illness and death in deep and profound ways, as well as a little of my own journey. Then I'll turn to both traditional Buddhist and secular contemplations that may prove useful.
    The RUclips channels:

    Thank you so much for this video, Doug. I was recently diagnosed with a terminal illness and I am struggling with many emotions. Sadly, my disease would not be terminal if my doctor would have been attentive to my concerns and tested me several months ago when I first sought medical care. I have been a Buddhist for over a decade and I enjoy listening to your teachings.

    I have Huntington's Disease and I can no longer talk or drive a car or ride a bicycle. It has been easier for me to accept my death then it has been for me to accept losing my independence.

      Thanks for letting us know Tide. Yes, there are events within life that we confront that are -- or at least seem -- worse than death. 🙏

    Another great video, Doug-a solid mix of real stories and teachings.
    While I have not yet encountered terminal illness, I have battled with Lyme disease and its debilitating effects when not treated immediately. Not to mention ongoing post-Lyme issues.
    Metta has become a huge part of my practice, both in a concentrated form, as well as in day-to-day mindfulness. It can feel forced at first, but after a few moments, a genuine warmth will arise towards fellow sentient beings. As a result, I may forget about my pain for a short while. And even if it’s still present, the “second dart” is often alleviated.
    Thank you.

      Thanks for your own story Thomas. Yes, my parents have had Lyme disease several times, although luckily they were treated quickly and are OK. I know it can be a real ordeal, and hope it progresses well for you. Meanwhile yes, the practice can be a help. 🙏

    Charnel ground contemplation is strong antidote to sensual pleasure.
    Here, at cremation site in Varanasi, I've occasionally meditated on that by comparing incinerating dead body to my body.
    Initially, it was very hard to meditate.

    • @DougsDharma
      @DougsDharma  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks Abhishek. Yes, there aren't charnel grounds in the US so this kind of contemplation is more difficult. Nevertheless in one dhamma course our teacher did enable us to contemplate such things by using videos of charnel grounds. It is hard to do but so useful. 🙏

    Hello Doug. I've been whatching your videos latelly and they are helping me to live my life differently. Thank you.
    Also I wanted to ask you for advice, my dad has a terminal cancer that makes him suffer a lot of pain. I have asumed the end of the story as calmlly and thoughtfully as Im able. But my dad is very afraid about the idea of passing away and I can't make him fall out of negative thinking and negation. Do you have any video which could help him calm his mind ? Even if it's just a little. Thank you.

      Hi Elisa! It’s hard for me to suggest options without knowing your father personally but some suggestions are my video on dealing with anxiety: ruclips.net/video/8eQwk4OEeGU/видео.html , my most recent video on worries about a minor surgery I had: ruclips.net/video/jTongGW_nyg/видео.html , and the basic practice of mindfulness meditation, about which I have a playlist and various other videos you can find by searching: ruclips.net/p/PL0akoU_OszRjItCXmF-MMPdKwTdtGSxl- .
      It may also help him to find guided meditations on these same themes. I don’t have any but there should be plenty you can find on the Internet from people like Sharon Salzberg, Tara Brach and others. Many good wishes for you and your father. I wish you the best and do feel free to let us know how it goes. 🙂🙏

    The concept of death got me into secular Buddhism, I was a hindu originally.
    I think the concept of death is actually best thought in the sense of how zen works. The lack of suffering and the calm nothingness, Buddhism lets us meditate and comfortably be ready for that peace.

    • @DougsDharma
      @DougsDharma  2 года назад

      Yes, I agree that one of the central practices of Buddhism is dealing with our own mortality.

    I want to do good and learn how to cope with this horrible pain unbearable kidney stone disease!! I am so sad ! I have cut all people out of my life because they can't understand the pain and I hate talking about it to people whom really don't care. I have tried everything from medicine, surgery, religion and nothing helps.I went all natural 4/2018 that has help me more than medicine and surgery . I want to do more .My dogs give me the most understanding and compassion than any humans have ever done .

      If you have a medical condition then first and foremost you need to be under a doctor’s care. Then as I suggested to you before I would consider taking an MBSR course if one is available near you, or even online. Another option is Lovingkindness meditation. I hope these are helpful to you. 🙏

    I worry about the people I would leave behind (mostly my girlfriend and parents). It's egotistical, but also to a degree realistic. It would pain me if they would die before me.
