Just bought #20 of the Rick Nielsen historic LP. Loving it.
If the goal is return on investment, then I would choose a Murphy Lab extra light relic '59 Les Paul. Not because Fender's Custom Shop guitars are lesser instruments, but because those that are willing to pay through the nose are more likely to buy a Les Paul.
If it were a guitar to actually play, then it would be an Anderson, Suhr or PRS Private Stock.

I will say this. When I buy my first Masterbuilt Jazzmaster, I am building it for me. I don’t have that urge to sell ever. I’m a hoarder of guitar and equipment. Oh lord. I have a problem lol

My experience for what it’s worth. Did the Masterbuilt thing. Waited 18 months and got a guitar that was beautiful - but never bonded with it and sold it about a year later. Go with a MB or a Murphy Lab - just make sure you can play it before you buy it.

I'm a guitar player...not an investor. So I am never considering any of these things when buying a guitar. Although, it is nice to know that good instruments will hold their value over time :)
To me Dale Wilson, Todd Krause, Vincent Van Trigt are top builders but I don't understand why Yuriy Shishkov does not get more attention. I think he is on another level and his guitars will be among the ones that will raise up in value the most. His craftsmanship is unparallel and that is why it is very rare to see one of his guitars listed for sale in comparison to all other master builders. And I am not talking about his crazy jewelry art guitar projects but the other "actual" guitars for playing. I think his guitars will go up in value pretty drastically as they are much more rare and are made the old "renaissance" way with the most attention to details and crazy amount of handwork involved using old tools designed and made by himself.
I had a John Cruz MVP strat with Abby pickups…. And sold it for 2700…. Kicking myself in the ass profit wise…But I never connected with it and am really glad it went to someone that is playing it on stage now. It deserves to be seen and heard. With that money I went and bought a shell pink American original 60’s strat and a couple of awesome pedals. I get more juice from the squeeze with that set-up.

Been playing and buying guitars for almost 50 years. Never, ever bought one as an investment and I've had some nice ones throughout the years. That being said, I've owned a Mark Kendrick built Strat for 20 years. Best Strat I've ever owned or played. Basic mid 50's style two sunburst Strat. I'll be playing that one until I die.
I’d pick a Murphy Lab instrument over a Fender Masterbuilt. Just my preference of Gibson over Fender.
Me, too. Because Fenders will always be more "assembled" than built. I don't see anyone setting LP style necks bought from Warmoth in there garages.
Bought a Gilmour fender CS NOS in 2016 for $3K on reverb they’ve been selling for upwards of $10K
I’d probably grab a Murphy Lab R9, light aged as an investment. They’re new-ish, and represent the beginning of Gibson’s non-razor blade era. I can see those increasing in value.
If you can afford it, go to your most high end guitar store and play through all the best guitars and choose the best one. I’ve been able to sell things overpriced just because it sounds phenomenal when people try it out. Don’t get a Gibson or a fender cs that’s generic. Get one that screams and sings.

When you buy anything, including guitars, based upon its potential investment value you are, in essence, allowing others to control your purchases. Beats me why anyone would do that but it takes all kinds to make a world, I guess.
My Fender 63 Custom Shop that was built in 2014, was purchased for a little less than 3K in 2017. If I wanted to sell it now, I could make some money. I could probably sell it for 4K or so. They are going for $5600 now new. Good musical gear usually holds its value or grows in value. Same with quality firearms.
Gibson Custom Shop. Signature models are also great. Right now I'd love a Slim Harpo ES-330. My crown jewel currently is a #30 Gibson Southern Rock Tribute (SRT) from the Custom Shop. Basically an R9..love it!!
Gibson. My first guitar as a new student was a Gibson Les Paul studio. Yes I’m that guy. I just knew that they were highly collectible. If I don’t like it I knew I could sell it and get my money out of it. When it comes to investing there is this golden aura around Gibson.

I have Josafina pickups in my Wildwood 10 61 Strat and they sound amazing!
I own an FCS stratocaster from you all and I still would say if investment was what I was looking at or even just holds value, I would go with the Murphy Lab Gibson. Maybe next you can do an accompanying video of custom shop guitars that tank in value, my G&L Legacy is a great example of that.

I just bought a Gibson Les Paul special flame custom shop, killer guitar!
Personally I would go PRS wood library or private stock. Not sure about the resale but probably the most beautiful guitar you’d ever own.
I'm fortunate enough to own one of each. I've got a limited edition 1 of 10 Gibson Historic Custom Shop 58 plain top LP Burst with a base ball bat neck hand relic-ed by Tom Murphy ' which is by far my best sounding guitar (I believe it's 2002). I've had it about 10 years and bought it from a good friend of mine. I play it regularly at home and once in a great while I take it on a gig simply because it sounds so cool. And in 2011 I got a Master Built Strat built by Dennis Galuszka and it is the coolest one of a kind axe I've owned. But I play it maybe once a year because it has increased in value so much I don't want to screw it up. It's the only guitar I own that doesn't have a single nick or scratch on it. I've got a bunch of swell guitars but those 2 are far superior as far as feel, weight, tone and playability than any of my other guitars. As far as an investment, I never thought of them as that when I bought them but I'm certainly glad I got them when I did as I definitely couldn't afford them now.

I did my own custom strat via warmoth so I'd go gibson because I can't easily make a Les Paul. A place like Warmoth allows you to have just about any neck shape you want or a vintage strat body with the shallow pickup routes. Plus you get to paint, solder and assemble it yourself if you do choose. There are lp style kits but you won't get gibson quality where as warmoth you do get fender quality or maybe even better. Arm wrestle
100% cant ever see paying that much money for a bolt on neck guitar. You get into that 2k+ range and it better be a set neck or neckthru..

Yup my strat and tele are both Warmoth builds...and they definietly hit the spot. I sold all my Fender CS guitars and replaced them with 2 Warmoths. I only discovered them 2 years ago and I love them! CS quality....and you can get the specs you want. My strat had an Ebony neck AND a Ebony FB, Alder body...sounds and feels sooo good. My tele roasted swamp ash and roasted maple neck..perfect for me. Other players who come in the studio love them too!

If finish is still delaminating from the Murphy Lab guitars, I’d say Masterbuilt is a better bet. Has Gibson fixed the finish reactivity issue with the analine dye yet? Or is it still being swept under the rug and blamed on the customer?

Fender CS. No sour grapes about Murphy Lab pricing, but as a practical matter they seem have looked at Fender CS prices and said, "Hold my beer..."
I’ve owned several second hand custom shop guitars. IMO, it’s the way to go. If you search you can find people trying to make a quick sell and get one for an excellent price. (I paid 3k for my mint r8 on Craigslist). These are EXCELLENT investments. I could fetch over 4k for it now easy and the value just keep going up. Just do you research and be informed on what your buying :)
With all of this excitement about Relic (aged) guitars,. we had no idea that the tools we had would gain such value! If I still had my 1961 Les Paul Jr., any of my Rickenbackers, like my 1964 330 from Rose Morris, my older Teles, like my 1967 Custom. I would never have to worry about money again! But in those days, it just wasn't a thing!
I think these relic'd guitars will lose value over time.
I know we were supposed to do this from an investment standpoint but for me it would be Fender custom shop. I will probably never be able to purchase a masterbuilt but if somehow that happened I really would call you guys and trust your judgment as to the Best builder available at Fender. I have the specs in my mind just in case.

For an investment, 8k would buy a great Fender offset, or an Epiphone Casino. Why spend money on a beat up new guitar when the same money buys you what they are trying to achieve?

I love your show/content etc...But I'm far too along in the guitar world not to negate the Fender Japan Custom Shop offerings or The J-Craft editions not to mention The Ishibashi Music limited editions all of which will run circles on many Masterbuilds and Team builds I will testify under oath and guarantee that these esoteric guitars are far and away in 90% of the cases better guitars. Do your research and have your minds blown HAPPY HOLIDAYS GENTS FROM Newport Beach, CA.

If I had that kinda money, I’d invest in that Cherry Red ES-355 on the wall. Got one in ‘76 and sold it in the early 90’s. Bad decision.
I need to make a choice? Dang. Umm ok… let me think… 🤔 Murphy Lab or Master Built? Such a difficult choice. Well actually no it’s not… Fender Master Built is the clear winner. For many reasons!
Don’t get me wrong, Murphy Lab guitars are really nice guitars, but I can’t wait to get going on my Fender Master Built.
Not that I could ever afford a custom shop for investment I would have to go with the Gibson the seem to gain value and hold it better from what I have seen.

That is one of the advantages of the relic and aged finishes. They come with play wear from new...so if you gig it and take reasonable care of it you won't lose value.

I'm just a dumb guitar player not a collector. Gibson is the only 1 of the 2 that talks about wood. From what I've heard the custom shop sources their own, plus they inspect everything that comes into the plant, and use all the very best wood for CS guitars. I've never heard Fender even mention wood, except maybe 1/4 sawn for necks. I believe wood matters, a lot. Even the CS line built are a better value for that reason. Years ago I missed buying one made by an independent builder, and from wood left at Parsons Street thought to be from the same lot as the 1959 Bursts were made from. They wanted $20k for it, and had a lot of documentation. The guitar was a very high quality build, and it looked and sounded right. $20k was a lot though, and I balked. I still think about it. --gary
For investment purposes, I'd go for one of the Collector's Choice Murphy Aged examples, not Murphy Labs which I feel has lost some of that master craftmanship value. Either that or a really limited Masterbuilt Fender like Yuriy Shishkov's Violinmaster. At that level though, I might as well go for a true vintage 60s strat! The only trouble is...geewhiz...I'm dreamin' my life away!! 😴
I would love to own/play a CS Strat. For a Les Paul, I'd buy a PRS.
I think next year with everything going up in price, the secondhand market is going to increase as well. Now might be the time to sell.

so my very first impression is that I would want a Fender just because I can get in at a lower price and it has more room to grow
From an investment only. I choose Gibson. Gibson devotees are fierce in their zeal to grab whatever model is their dream. This cuts across all models the Fender people tend to be narrower in their echelon of valued guitars.

Having a custom built guitar comes with maintenance costs that aren't factored in. You're gonna want a top of the line luthier to maintain your instrument. So if you're spending 8-10k on one of these instruments, you need to factor in the Ongoing maintenance and set-up that such an instrument regularly requires.
A guitar would be a terrible investment for me... I would play it all the time and never sell it!

The problem with Fender Custom Shop stuff is not the quality of the guitars but the fact that the Fender name is on everything from all over the globe. Gibson keeps the Gibson name on only American made models. So the Gibson logo is associated with a higher end built guitar, even if it really isn't.

I had this dilemma few months back. I learned that high end gibsons are better investments but, there are going to be a lot of faults which you will only notice when it's too late. Fenders are better built, they're safer buying second hand.

Gibson and Fender will always have their die hard fans, so similar demand. I feel the future price will be affected by rarity, determined by quantities produced and the actual builder who makes them. Fender might have some real hits with some individual masters builders in their team gaining fame after they retire kind of like famous painters. Gibson don't have that, it seems more like a collaborative effort under the supervision of Murphy.
A Christmas Eve video where your choice of perspective makes Jonathan look like a Rock n Roll Santa and Baxter his gear making elf! Really wish the Josefinas weren't Masterbuilt only option. I'd love to get a single coil P with one of her winds. Whether it's for a working instrument or as only an investment I'd honestly recommend buying any Fender Custom Shop used. You let the original owner take the immediate hit and it'll start climbing in value right away. Can't go wrong with a FCS.
My humble opinion is don’t buy guitars as an “investment,” the market is too volatile and the market is very small. Rare exceptions are original guitars and some particular models/years (mostly non-custom shops). Collectors are an interesting bunch and it’s a small market.
I buy/sell many guitars (mostly fender custom shops) and I’ve found a stable way to keep my hobby going (both as a player and collector). I have a specific list of guitars that I want to own or try out, I never (not ever) buy new, I negotiate the best deals for guitars kept in the best condition (and let go of deals that are too expensive), and have a one-in-one out policy. Sometimes (but rarely) I find an amazing deal and can sell the guitar for more money to buy one I really want to own. Mostly, I try to break even when I sell them or make a couple hundred bucks here and there but that’s only bc I buy used.
Gibson custom shops are way overpriced in my opinion and the quality is hit or miss. Fender is quite reliable and the used market is quite better than Gibson. Early Murphy lab guitars aged my Murphy himself might fetch a premium overtime but that market if potential buyers is small (all you need is one). My final thoughts: play because you love it and enjoy the hobby and it’s financially “sustainable.” Invest elsewhere

I would go Gibson custom shop but I would never pay that kinda money for a guitar. I've played a few $5-$6000 les pauls and wasn't blown away enough to spend that kind of coin. My 61 junior will be worth more than I paid for it. Hell it already is
I couldn't approach it from the investment position. There are better things to invest in. However, if I could afford the custom world, I would go Luxxtone. A lightly relic'd Choppa S, no Floyd, 12" radius, jumbo stainless frets and an HSS loadout. *Drool

Well... that 2015 strat comment may not be totally accurate. Inflation has made it so nothing is the same price as it was in 2015 🤣 I bought my strat in 79 and still use it. Loaded it with stainless steel frets and cs69 pickups. Still got all the original gear and case. I think I made a return on investment. But guitars are spiritual. Not just investments. Ask CBS.

My first gibson , a used les paul traditional, was bought with a price equivalent to 4,5 btc.
Today I can buy 15 brand new PRS private stock with 4,5 btc.
If I was an apprentice, I’d buy everything I ever built as an investment just in case I’d ever make something of myself after the apprenticeship is all done. Then I’d be rich . . . hopefully, lol.

Buying a guitar is not an investment. An investment pays a dividend while you own it. Buying a guitar is a speculation....

Someone who bought a Murphy lab guitar and I could probably never be friends. The entire conceit behind them is so unbelievably ridiculous to me. It serves as a window into the values of that person, and I find them objectionable.

I think guitars are tools meant to be used . I hate the guitar investment trend. Both shops build beautiful instruments and I’d love to own either . I would however play it so I’d definitely be looking at a relic . Gibson would be the safest bet if you are buying it as an investment . I’m sorry I just can’t get into guitar investment, something just a moral thing for me and it’s just my point of view that an instrument is a tool used to craft something, machine, art , music. They are meant to be played, they are meant to have the strings and finger tips constantly polishing the frets. I’m a firm believer in buying the best quality tool you can afford for the task at hand . When something puts you in a jamb in life and you have to sacrifice your instruments/tools. Hopefully if you were able to buy decent quality you can recoup some cash, but also take into account the years of service it’s given you . The Japanese fenders they were giving away ( used market ) in the 90s have really been popular lately . I remember seeing them 300 to 400 used back then and they have at least doubled , is that appreciation or inflation though ? I’m not sure . I don’t see any guitar made later than the 80s ever reaching 6 figure values unless it was specifically owned by a famous player or played on an iconic song . I’m probably wrong and should’ve dumped 10 grand in an Adam Jones LP custom. Take it out of the box go over it with white gloves and take a few pictures of it. Package it back up nice and neatly and promptly shipped it to the guy giving me 25,000 dollars for it . That was crazy seeing those things bringing double less than one week of delivery . Looking back it was obvious silver burst fever had been gone stupid for the last 20 years. Who’s the most famous silver burst player with the most versatile and passionate fan base, some obvious very deep pocketed ones too . I should’ve known that also , you ever priced Tool tickets ? If you’ve read this whole book I’ve written here, you’ll realize we’ve come full circle. That's, literally, what the custom shop builders are doing. Doing it themselves. It's not real, as far as the aging. And, a guitar is either assembled properly or not. You can do the same.
Call me old school in my thinking, but I give massive props to the marketing department at these big production companies- creating hype about a special built copy of old production assembly line guitars......
Totally sucking up to the generation that has money to spend and value a high price tag above everything else. The investment a musician has in buying an instrument is what they're going to create with it, not what a piece of wood will be worth in 5 years.
The funny thing to me is a lot of the people buying into the hype are the same people that called PRS "lawyer guitars" 20 years ago. what goes around comes around I guess.
