I was in Covent Garden, Rolando live was most adorable, passionate and YOUNG Lensky. His singing was so expressive and beautiful. Unfortunately there is no videos from that production.On the stage this aria was out of this world. I knew people who did not stay after Lensky was killed. You should see what was in audience..AND his russian is the best from all foreign speaking singers. But I heard a lot..

This is the best Lensky on RUclips. It is also, I think, one of Villazon's best RUclips videos. I like Villazon, but not all his RUclips videos are great. This one, however is. Several other comments listed here give excellent insight into why this performance is good.

Thank you for your comments about Lensky aria. Rolando made this role incredibly good, I saw it live in London. He actually looked like Pushkin and his singing was most expressive and beautiful. He WAS Lensky.
People like stereotypes that's way it is sometimes difficult for them to accept new image, even supertalented.

Your comment is a clear misunderstanding of some core elements of lyrical interpretation. Playing on stage, opera singers are supposed to be histrionic and to underline the psychological features of the arias they are interpreting. This, however, doesn't mean you can play a lyric role without a bold, talented and well-trained voice, so your comment about "Villazon is not a voice" is at best quite wrong.

I really like Villazon, my favourite tenor is Corelli but this aria has been sung in an immortal, incomparable fashion in his mother tongue by the great Russian tenor Sergei Lemeshev. (Also on RUclips)

I came to this after the excellent Piotr Beczala whom I had just seen live. Immediately I was struck by the "more interesting" quality of this voice (I did not know it was Villazon). Beczala has the superior technique so that his voice has lasted extremely well but Villazon's brightly burning brief candle has made an indelible impression on vocal history. Let us yet hope it will re-kindle into flame.

I do like Rolando Villazon. Reading the comments.. Well I think that opera is not just about singing everything correctly its also acting and lots of other things. Noone has perfect technics. He does have a voice he just overdoes technical things I think, this is the only big problem tha I can see. Other than that he is a really good performer and I like his voice.

When I think of Lenski, I think of the fragility that was Tchaikovsky himself. That's why a Wunderlich or Lemeshev sounds so fitting to his style. Villazon's is a bit too muscular for me. A beautiful instrument, to be sure. If he has had vocal problems in the past, please blame it on the huge opera houses, the huger orchestras and the nasty conductors who couldn't care less about hushing their instrumentalists or taking tempos that lend themselves to good vocalism.

Ого! Вот такую интерпретацию я ещё не слышал. Если не ошибаюсь, у Вильяссона драматический тенор, а потому голос звучит заметно плотнее, а возможно местами и тяжеловато, но сложностей добавляет и русский язык, с которым певец тем не менее замечательно справился.

This is very charm and passionate interpretation of Lenski's aria, in the interpretation (the acting) Villazón is unique but the voice of Vargas is the best for this role (just the sweet voice).
