    Had this same issue. Removed and cleaned all five fan blades, lubed the drive spindle in the motor, everything was dusted, cleaned, re installed and balanced - still lots of clicking. THEN I found this video. The black wire was just grazing the motor casing just like you experienced. Wish I had seen your video first but at least everything is clean. Thank you!!

    You're a lifesaver! I switched ceiling fans in two rooms and the first one went without a hitch but the second was making a tink tink sound and I was puzzled as to what it could be. I did a quick Google search and found your video and sure enough it was a black wire hitting the motor. What a pain having to take it apart but happy the problem has been solved.

    Really appreciate this post. Installed a Hunter fan yesterday and had a couple of issues...first a thumping sound that turned out to be that they engineered the fan brackets too close to the light kit housing and had to replace one of the screws to go in a little further. Got all that done and had that clicking sound. Found your video and was pretty sure you were right. Took it all back down to the wires and sure enough, my ground wire was hitting the fan motor. I couldn't understand what's causing it, and anytime I did research it would just be the same thing... clean your fan is it wobbly. Answer is no because it was newly installed due to faulty switch. Not at my house, but at my friends beach house. The kitchen ceiling fan makes this very strange noise that kind of sounds like wonka wonka wonka wonka, or cackling when the blades turn. I know for a fact it's nothing with the motor or capacitor as it still makes the noise after turning the fan off and the blades are slowing down, and whenever we spin the blades by hand with the fan off.
    Turning the fan on high, the noise appears slow and quiet and the noise gradually gets faster and louder as the blades get faster and reach full speed. I have no idea what the cause of this is. It's been this way for around 10 years I believe, possibly more. It never stops either as it still makes the noiee after running it or leaving it off for extended periods of time. It endlessly makes rhat noise until you turn it off and when you turn it back on it's there again within 5 seconds after pulling the chain.
    You can hear this fan all over the first floor of the house as the kitchen happens to be in the center of the beach house too. Also keep in mind, this house is very old and that fan is very old. I'm surprised it actually still functions today in 2023. But idk if it has to do with the old age as it made the noise ten years ago too

    • @FieldGuidetoDIY
      @FieldGuidetoDIY  Год назад +1

      It may be time to replace the fan. I’m speculating whether being near the beach has introduced some corrosion in the drive that is causing the noise. Just a thought. Thanks so much for sharing and for watching. Keep me posted on the fan please.

    • @glengalloway2508
      @glengalloway2508 Год назад +1

      @@FieldGuidetoDIY that fan will probably remain there until it stop working completely, as the owner of the beach house is an old lady who likes old things. It's been there for at least 30 years or so. It doesn't go very fast either on the high speed and the light globe is there. I'm actually there now, I've been here staying for the weekend and it's currently on now the high speed making the noise this second. I searched this video this morning to see if i can diagnose the issue. I'm leaving tomorrow morning so there won't be anymore updates til probably next year
      I never thought about the beach conditions destroying the fan, I didn't know that was possible. But it makes since as most of the other veiling fans in this beafh house are old and broken too. They all still work but in different crazy ways.
      Master bedroom fan has a bad capacitor as it goes very slow on all 3 speeds. Guest Bedroom 1 fan goes high on all 3 speeds, medium and low don't function anymore. Guest bed 2 has a broken chain, can't even turn it on. Guest bed 3 makes a clicking noise when it turns.
      The only two fans that work just fine are the living room and dining room ones.

    • @glengalloway2508
      @glengalloway2508 Год назад

      @@FieldGuidetoDIY some things I didn't mention about the kitchen fan since you wanted updates. I don't know what brand abd model it is, but the appearance is it has short down rod, 4 wooden blades two of them have dark green patterns on them while the other 2 are Plain wood. A light fixture in a glass globe form with 3 screws holding it in. It's also not hooked up to a wall switch. You can only turn it on and off by pulling the cord. Also the fan cord is longer than the light cord which is backwards as in most fans the short ones the fan and long ones the light.
      The cackling noise as I call it only appears on the high speed. The fan spins too slow for it to be heard on medium and low. The blades are also very dirty and I think the canopy and down rod are rusted. The light globe is also very loose. No one ever cleans it or maintains it. So no wonder why it makes that noise. I've been thinking about your idea of the beach air corrupting the fan and other fans there. But I can't find anyone else across the internet with this problem with oceanfront house ceiling fans. This beach house is third row off the shore. Ocean visible from the front balcony. I believe it was built in the 1940's during WWII, possibly 30's. Very old house. Definitely the oldest house I've been inside. This is the last of info I have about that fan. Also sorry for spelling mistakes. My phone is a little glitchy

      @@FieldGuidetoDIY there has one more update just now. I did some more research and I think the model might be a Codep Stratosphere, which is a vintage fan from the 1980's. Images of the Codep Stratosphere match most of the description of that kitchen fan.

      It was exactly what you said. You saved me a whole heap of trouble. Your explanation of the possible problem was very well put together.

      Oh my. So it still vibrates and wobbles with no blades or fixture on there? That ain’t good. Sounds like a bad bearing. Probably need a new fan.

    Our clicking is intermittent/unpredictable. Like an electronic sound almost. It’s been driving me bonkers!

    My issue is the ticking sound is coming from IN the ceiling, not from the fan itself. I can't find anyone with the same issue.

      I suggest you check the stability of the box the fan is hanging from. Maybe it is loose and you’re hearing the metal box touching a screw or something. Also, check the wiring inside the box and make sure it is not arcing. That would be bad.

      @@FieldGuidetoDIY wow, I wasn't expecting a response! I found out that I can make the noise happen without the fan on. If I tap on it, then there's the ticking noise that happens a few times, kind of like the random cracks you hear when the house expands and cools across the day. I hope that doesn't mean the wood beam is going to collapse or something. 😅

      Oh no. That doesn’t sound good at all. It may be time for a new fan or at least a new light kit. Let me know how it goes.
