I lived / worked in Bangkok for 16 years and became tired of beaches and tourists. I am now retired in rural Thailand and enjoy the countryside and solitude. A city with all the “Western” comforts is a 20 minute drive. Not everyone wants to hit the bars and beaches. Some are into temples, national parks, and observing the simple life in the countryside.
