- It's been a long and fun journey on this channel. While I am normally repairing or inspecting RVs, I did create the channel to cover many things from "A to Z in Arizona."
After, visiting Bluetti in California over the summer, they reached out to me to see if I would be insterested in testing out a EP800 when they discovered I had a 6000w solar array already on my house since 2009. Which meant I had over a decades worth of data to see the effectiveness of the EP800. Having used another Bluetti product for over 6 months that has not had any issues and has always worked, I felt comfortable attempting this fun project.
Bluetti asked me to chronicle my installation and how I am using it. So in this video we are just unboxing it and I attempt to lay out a plan of how I can utilize it.

I'm impressed with Bluetti's packaging. Looks like high quality shipping boxes - leads me to believe the higher quality of the their products.
Stuff one of those in a clasa a and be done with 8d batteries and you can plug your house in if you have an rv garage 😅

I had considered this as well. Just need a good solar array on the roof to accompany the generator. Would still probably need a charger-inverter inline to charge from the alternator.
Really looking forward to this series! I have a grid tied solar system and it really annoys me that, in the event of a power failure, even with the sun shining, I have to start a smelly old gasoline generator! Thank you for this information!

I'm jealous, your system is nearly twice my size though. But definitely jealous, I only get 3-4 months a year with no charge.
Hi James, great video! That is a sweet system! As it happens I just installed a similar system for my house's critical circuits this past summer. It has 10kWh of storage and a single phase 3500w inverter/charger which has inputs from utility, solar (2385w) or generator. I installed the system as we have frequent power outages. When it's -20c outside, I really want the furnace to be able to run along with the well pump etc. Thanks for sharing your system install.
SMA sunny boy inverter. One of the best there is. I worked at SMA in the test department, I tested thousands of inverters. Maybe I tested yours.
They were assembled in Colorado. They closed that facility several year ago and moved production back to Germany and China.
How fun, this was an upgrade from SRP for some type of "smart" grid innovation

You do a great job Always. HOWEVER, a NOTE to Bluetti:
I HATE Companies (there are many that do this) that do NOT provide SIMPLE INFORMATION about the DIFFERENCE of THEIR PRODUCTS. WHERE is the SIMPLE CHART showing the DIFFERENCES between the EP800 and EP900 so a CUSTOMER can EASILLY DECIDE which is best for them???? SO DAMN ANNOYING.
its nearly the same, basically ep900 requires permits/grid tied 9kw, ep800 offgrid diy version 8kw

Great solar system with lots of features from what I can tell. I will have to look into spec to understand more , but from what I have seen I love it . Thanks so much AZ always exciting here.

That would be the most efficient...except solar is net metering so charging in the day from the panels would be the most efficient, and then weighing the loss from net metering while charging the batteries and seeing which is more cost efficient including installation, hardware cost etc...its a balance

It would be nice if you could do a video on. Running your entire house on the battery for as long as possible if as if you were Connected to the grid.
I could do that. It will last a full day right now, but 3 easy if I turn the hot tub off.

I'm assuming this is all done by now...since you got it 2 months ago....and because of you...I'm slowly getting into panels and battery back up
It has been installed for a month now and I am still learning the system, but it has performed much better than I expected with no issues really yet.
@@AZExpert with your panels and the battery backup you should be able to go days without using any shore power.. and what is the life expectancy of those batteries

Was your original system selling power back to utility company? What did you do when a power outage hit? Generator? Great video.
yes, excess power credits my account of course cheaper than I pay SRP, I've yet to have a power outage longer than 15 minutes so I would have killed 2 or 3 generators sitting unused and neglected by nown :) Thank you!!

I live in Northern Nevada and ended up doing it myself. But where I live it's not just electricians it is any of the skilled trades. Luckily I am a trained Engineer. @@AZExpert

I've never seen a power panel for the house outside. Here it's always inside in the basement.
yes, it's very standard in Arizona. It surprises many people that anyone could trip your breakers :)

I'm wondering if bluetti makes something smaller thar would work in my beaver coach? I know you can buy separately a solar system but I'm wondering about a more user friendly plug and play?
ac300max or 500 but wou would likely want to bypass your inverter and the 12vdc is likely not enough, I am encougaring bluetti to make a RV system with50-60 dedicated 12vdc output.
That's something I would be very interested in! Hopefully if bluetti is smart they will take your advice there's alot of people looking for a easier plug and play system. Will your Magnum inverter charge the Battery? If so, what inverter do you have?
Is your Solar System enough to power your house completely? Or do you still get somewhat of an electric bill? I'm sure summer months are probably better but on average I guess is what I'm asking.
At 6000 watts not fully as the range, dryer and A/C require more than that, but it does provide 80% during 3/4 of the year, obvioulsy during summer the A/C never stops, but I could see adding a mini split to the livingroom as most of the house is not used most of the time.

SRP is net metering only a non profit James, Ive been working with SRP for a long time, a way cheaper version the your other provider there APS...typically UPS systems cost efficiency and performance are not Lithium..due to cost and performance data..power substations UPS are usually flooded lead acid more cost efficient and reliable, and over 98% recycled as weight is not a concern where lithium need to be operated in a much more climate controlled environment and not that able to be recycled...so the UPS in homes is to be used in peak time frames like a peaker generation plant does with peak demand...the bigger question is your net metering savings vs this system ROI and consider the substantial cost of this system vs ROI in my area the power goes off for weeks at a time so I have a natural gas generator with a transfer switch which is much more reliable then a battery bank and keeping the house cool when its 104+ for weeks at a time..if your system is both a net metering and battery bank im curious to hear and the cost and relative cost savings over a hot summer, great video James!
If I'm honest, I never switched plans to off peak, I had an electric car and pool and did not want to stress about when to use during the year. I still estimate it saved $200 a month which has more than paid for itself in 15 years. I am now thinking about changing plans with this system and I think it should save $100 more a month, so not nearly as much, but still after 15 years it still will, and locks in savings against price increases too.
How can I reach you for some RV repairs? I have searched and can't find any contact information or a location. Please help us find you, we want to get our RV fixed by you when we head west.
OK I have to ask , why does your house have two power meters ? I also have solar and still only have one meter .
This is my utilities method of metering solar output and charging me an additional $20 a month per meter :(

silly question: why on earth is the breaker panel outside or does your area have different standards? Seems odd to have to go outside to reset a breaker or if some nefarious person is fiddling with your system.
That's how houses are built in Arizona, I know it's different to a lot of places, but surprisingly no one touches each others breaker panels here.
I was more thinking that if you're in bed or pajamas and you blow a circuit, you now have to dress appropriately for whatever the weather is outside just to reset. Seems a bit inconvenient and short-sighted but who am I to judge. Thanks for the reply. I hope you didn't have to go outside to make it. LOL
10 kilowatt hours? If you are careful about how much you use, that might get you through 1/2 a day. For how many thousand dollars?
this setup is 20kwh, I have not been careful, and keep the hot tub on this setup too so I can test it out, obviously during winter demand is low but I charge to 90% and it's usually about 35% by 10am after running the house on the battery from 5pm the day before. It's been working as descibed, hopefully I can get non grid tied solar hooked up and really save money though, rather than using the grid tied solar to charge the battery.
