Totally agree with others about an episode discussing skin changes and skincare in perimenopause and menopause. I was seriously not prepared for the skin effects from perimenopause that I've experienced so far (like suddenly becoming reactive to my usual skincare regime, getting patches of eczema at random times, milia outbreaks, bouts of cholinergic urticaria) & until I spoke to my GP I had no idea if it was something I was doing wrong with my skin to make it behave the way it was.

So, as others have mentioned here, there needs to be more research and discussion about how peri-menopause and menopause affect the skin. We all know about how environment, sun damage, stress, diet, gravity etc. affect the skin over time. We also know the habits and products that can help with those.
However, what I have not seen a lot of talk about is how loss of estrogen and progesterone impact the look and feel of the skin. (In addition to all the other lovely changes to your body. So much fun) I feel like the lack of information on this leads sooooooo many women to feel bad about the way they look. Even though they have done everything right for their skin. I am definitely one of those women. I have been caring for my skin, almost obsessively, my whole life.
It wasn't until I watched a video from another dermatologist here about why JLo looks so good for her age. She stated that one of the factors was that she thought JLo was probably on some form of hormone therapy. I feel kind of stupid, but I never would have thought about that. No doctor has ever had any discussion about that with me.
This needs to be talked about more. And it needs to be proactive rather than waiting until full menopause and the damage has already been done.

    • @DRVenard

And many of us with hormone receptor positive breast cancer can't take hormone replacement therapy😢

Asking dermatologists to research hormone therapy for you is like asking a chef to research chemical engineering. You’re looking for answers from the wrong people, focus on anti-aging specialists/doctors.

    • @leapol13
      @leapol13 Год назад +2

@@RubmaLione But as doctors they DO have access to studies and research about all sorts of drugs and how they can affect the skin.
It seems like an important topic for helping skin as we age.

First of all, thanks for all you do! Luv you guys. I need to say that sleeping on your side without a special pillow for your face can definitely cause wrinkles. I've witnessed people having more wrinkles on the side of their face that they prefer to sleep on. Because of that, I invested in a special pillow that keeps my cheeks off the pillow while on my side. I'm more of a side sleeper so the pillow has really made a difference. ❤👍🏻

As far as when sunscreen should be used…when I was growing up in the 70s… no one was aware that sun was harmful! As a teen, I had very bad acne and went to a dermatologist who gave me Retin-A liquid and told me it would be beneficial also to sit out in the sun for 15 minutes a day to let the sun dry up my acne. So I never wore sunscreen Even into my 40s. Unfortunately, now I have a lot of sun damage.

I have genetically had good skin but one thing that has occurred recently is due to a change in sleeping position (I'm 53). I used to sleep on my back but an injury means I now sleep predominantly on my right side. This has been for a few years now and over this time I have gradually noticed that my right eyebrow and right eyelid are obviously lower than the left (which they were not before). It is even more noticeable now as I have had to start wearing glasses again for reading (having been shortsighted from age 7 to 27 when I had laser surgery) and the right eyebrow is below the frame whilst the left is parallel to it. Any advice as to how to combat this other than not sleeping on my right side (as this is not an option)? is what people say about satin pillowcases true for example? Thank you and for all your content.

Two things that could help is
      1. a different pillow, I switched from a loose down pillow to one of those memory foam pillows that has a well in the middle, and it's more comfortable to lay on my back with it
      2. just putting pillows on the side you like to sleep on, and on your chest... it's like weighing yourself down in place lol

"That being said..." lol, I wanted to comment on the side sleeping segment. I have been a side sleeper most of my life. I tend to sleep primarily on my left side, and I will say, Dr. Maxfield, that there is a difference in the depth of the lines under my left eye compared to my right. It's not obvious to the casual observer, mostly just to me. I do switch sides, but if I sleep on the right, my ear hurts, kind of like muscle cramp, which then drives me back to the left. Maybe I'll just use more eye cream on that side? ;)

Hey I'm 53 and I'm from the hot, sunny, and humid South Carolina I have terrible sun damage from way to many years without sunscreen, I was hoping you could recommend a good niacinamide which I've heard helps with hyperpigmentation and tons of dark spots thank you guys

    Hello from Colorado Springs!
Botox for teeth clenching/grinding, please! (Is this also done by a dermatologist?) My dentist refused to comment on the subject 🤔

What do you think about 'thymol t essence ' There's this face wash from Ponds that claim reduction in acne in 3 days with Thymol T essence as active ingredient
I couldn't find much article about it ,other than research paper

Overnight moisturizer Belief Aqua Bomb sleeping mask… any good? I’d really appreciate a run down of buy or pass on skin care items when Ulta and Sephora have their sales! This one is about to end in 2 days.. but Ulta does send info in advance. That would help so much to know what to buy or pass on!! 😄🙏🏼 also, I get confused and have never sat to memorize what I can use with what or what to not use with certain ingredients. Is it possible to do video on that? Like a newbie to skin care video. I’m looking into retinol but sounds like I should use up skincare I just bought first 🤷🏼‍♀️ anyways thanks for all u do!!!!!
