Whenever modern times and struggles shock me, I am reminded that suffering, pain and loss - as well extraordinary humans- were at extreme levels in those remarkably complex 1860’s. Much to learn from their resilience, generosity and courage, and this woman had it in spades.
You might find: "A Journal of Hospital Life In The Confederate Army of Tennessee" by Kate Cummings, a very interesting read. What the women of the North & South went through was quite similar AND wholly different.
Ron this was a great description of hospital life in the civil war! I really enjoyed this story! I can relate to this story because I once worked in a nursing home!
I find it interesting that BOTH the US Christian Commission and the US Sanitary Commission used the services of these women yet never DEMANDED of the US Government in general as well as President Lincoln and Secretary of War Edwin Stanton in particular that Dr Mary Walker MD(the only woman to receive the Medal of Honor) and all of the nurses serving in the US Army be commissioned as officers just as as those serving in the Confederate Army were. I find it interesting that when Dr Walker became a Suffragette the US Congress who had deemed the Suffragette Movement to be a subversive, radical organization saw fit to revoke her Medal of Honor. Dr Walker's reason for advocating for the vote and equal rights for women was that if women could serve in a war like men then they should have the same rights as men. The US Government restored her Medal to Dr Walker under President Carter long after her death but in the period of the 1890s to the present, they have also refused to award the Medal to any other woman despite the fact that recommendations were made for the senior US Army nurse in the Philippines( a Japanese POW from 1942 to 1945), several nurses during the Korean War, the Vietnam War as well as the Gulf War and Iraq/Afghanistan Wars on the grounds that women were not allowed in actual combat as were men. Prior to the restoration of Dr Walker's Medal, the US Government also used the arguement that she had proven to be unworthy of the honor given to her by engaging in radical politics and that if any other women were decorated with the Medal that they might also so embarass the government. What a lot of crap! Although Administrations from Wilson through the present day(Biden) have made a point of awarding the Medal to those who they feel that they deserved the honor, there has never been an effort to award the Medal to those who were recommended for that honor not only including those women but also Navy Cook Doris Miller and an Army Captain(denied because they were Black) as well as the members of the RAF Eagles, the Flying Tigers and the Tuskegee Airmen who should be awarded the Medal as units just as President Clinton awarded the Medal to the unit of US Marine Navajo Indian "Talkers" for their heroic performance on Iwo Jima. It is cheap to talk about EQUALITY and HEROISM but talk alone NEVER ACOMMPLISHED ANYTHING ONLY ACTION DID. The appropriate action should be taken to award the Medals as well as lesser ones to deserving service members or their families and immediate action taken to etablish real EQUALITY in the Armed Forces not just a fake WOKE, POLITICALLY CORRECT, DIVERSITY-EQUITY-INCLUSIVE attitude that serves selfish political interests and DOES NOT build an armed forces and a society based on true equality and commitment to true nationhood! Perhaps the voters should tell Democratic Presidential Candidate Kamala Harris and Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump that the voters will elect to office the candidate that will promote such a society effective immediately rather than just offer useless platitudes!
My favorite video so far. Thank you
Great video. Another great woman.

That was tough duty with little reprieve or options! Most interesting info, thank you!
FYI, the book is available as a free digital download from the Library of Congress. I'm looking forward to reading it.
I've recently read: A Journal of Hospital Life In The Confederate Army of Tennessee, by Kate Cummings. You might enjoy reading this one, too.

At 7:08, was that "Po'", or "Pogue"?
I believe I heard it as "Po".
