Recently I had to cut some holes in one inch thick 1020 mild steel with a 42 mm annular cutter running at about 300rpm, and found that birds nesting was largely avoided, not by actual peck drilling, but by momentarily backing off the pressure to zero every few seconds, but without actually withdrawing the cutter from the cutting position, resulting in shorter pieces of swarf exiting the flutes on the cutter. It also seemed to slightly speed up the process overall, but that may have only been a perception. It was certainly easier than constantly battling rapidly growing birds nests.
This is what we use in fabrication of structural steel for many years. Very good tool. I used hole saws with carbide teeth to do the same job in cast iron with good result. See me next. Old Bob
They're fantastic. Gear a drill press down via pulleys and I believe Hougen sells the adapter for them. Lots cheaper than a mill or mag drill for a hobby shop guy.
Ha, you are absolutely right on thicker material needs to have the swarf removed, also, dont leave it on the table, I have had my new swarf grab my old swarf and create a spinning rats nest of death. Ive thought about trying to grind a chipbreaker of sorts into an annular cutter to alleviate this problem.
liked your video but a good comparison would also include how fast the annular cutter gets dull compared to a drill bit. How easy to resharpen, how strong one is to the other etc.
Cut it, glue it, crack it with a hammer. Neat trick. Sorta like a left thread at the end of a right nut brazed on not many can figure out how to remove it.
You got it, took about 5 minutes to do, it's a tribute to ... this old tony ... on youtube, he makes some of the best machining and metal working videos on youtube and uses his young son to cut steel with a knife or sword. check him out if you get a chance.
Im having difficulties with the mallet cutting method. Despite how hard I hit the material I can’t seem to get a straight cut.. the pieces are never square. any ideas?
Right that's what i was thinking., not sure if you saw me, but I turned it down from 230 to 170 rpm and it didn't seem to make a difference. I think the spindle is running out a bit too much, just visually you could see it
after finding out the time and equipment needed to sharpen those annular cutters, it becomes obvious these are not for most. Only production shops would benefit from purchasing these and the jigs and grinders needed to maintain them.
Good point. You can buy the small ones on eBay for around $20 each and they will drill 300 holes without needing sharpened, but year the larger ones need a lot of power to turn and may not be the best option for a home shop
Please do me a favor and take the chuck key out of the chuck in the lathe in the back ground - that's all I could concentrate on. - ex apprentice instructor.
I think there is no problem with pecking. Provided it's done right, those that advise against it possibly rammed the tool down on a peck and never tried it again.
Scotty Mac 22. he was reaching in with his hand while the spindle was still spinning. Any shop I have ever worked in he would get fired for that behavior. pussy ass hands. lol .
+Joe MacDonald what's your profession out of curiosity? because it doesn't sound like you do a lot of work that would toughen up your hands, just judging by your comments...
Man...I scribed a line an I been hitting this thing with a hammer for hours now...how'd you do that? Naw, just kidding. But I did get my son to beat on it for a minute
hi great video Im not a metal worker but I feel like a idiot was that real the hit with the hammer I think not but never know the Mexicans that put up my metal garage ripped the metal in straight lines without cutting
رايش الحديد ممكن يقطع اليد .. لا تلمس برادة الحديد والمحرك يدور 😤 Iron Reich Iron filings Can cut off the hand Do not touch iron filings And the motor rotates 😤
You gotta learn to keep those fingers away from the swarf while the spindle is still rotating. Those long turnings can rip the skin off the side of your finger - or worse.
@@turbocobra You should clearly mention that fake cut in the video or description or some novice or nitty-wit get it to be real and get pissed off when they can't do it.
Scotty Mac 22 'Rotabroach' is a trade name. Mag-drill cutter is more commonly used., Much as a vacuum cleaner is known as a 'Hoover' to some folks.....

Expect to hear from my lawyers...
about how AWESOME that was!
Fine, as a way to retaliate, i won't be watching anymore of your videos.... until later today lol
This Old Tony ,.
fack
😂😂😂
No safety
I nearly fell over when he split that thick metal with a soft mallet...that was fantastic!!
Seems his hand moved an inch while holding the metal ,some might say it was edited even :)

You got me there at 3:15 for a minute. Had to replay it a few times then I saw the edit. Lol

Okay, okay. You had me at "This Old Tony". Subscribed....
Lol, well, my videos are quite dull compared to his, but thanks for subbing!
HI Gary,
I really like annular cutters. I use them all the time to cope pipe too. Works great!
Take Care,
Reid
How do you get it sharpen, Reid?
I just tried my first annular cutter today. I liked it.
They're fantastic. Gear a drill press down via pulleys and I believe Hougen sells the adapter for them. Lots cheaper than a mill or mag drill for a hobby shop guy.
Drill press. Ha, no man uses a drill press when he has a bridgeport. :) I just tossed it in a collet.
Cool . That is what i need to drill my mower blades . No mill and my drill press has to much run out
Brilliant video thank you 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
New subscriber. Like very much what I see so far. Nice shop & tools.
That mallet trick was hilarious 😂
I love Tony's vids too.
oh yes they are very good
They ARE very good - problem is - his subtle sense of humor means you have to watch the video 2/3 times before you take in all the detail.

Could you clamp a vertical plate or rod on the side of the vice to break the chips?
Howdy Gary. Thank you for another interesting video! Be safe and God bless you!!
Thanks Ray,. appreciate it!
Lol it really works with the mallet. I tried it. 🤣
I just want to add that you did a really nice job welding your Tab & Slot table. Most over do it!
Oh thank you sir.
Tony,s video are the best
Nice experiment. That saved a lot of time.
Thanks Sam!
That drill is probably three times more than the cost of my car! But beautiful cuts, and any reference to "This Old Tony" gets props!
TOT is the man!
I've never seen that before, what type flat bar was that? A36? , wow just like a clay brick. William
Could you clamp a vertical plate or rod on the side of the vice to break the chips?
One of the best things about annular cutters is you can cut a hole overlapping an edge.
Yes indeed! you can slot with them also if your in a pinch and dont have the right size end mill (plunge slotting that is)
liked your video but a good comparison would also include how fast the annular cutter gets dull compared to a drill bit. How easy to resharpen, how strong one is to the other etc.
Excellent points for sure
are there a cup cutters to perform a 2½" diameter through a 3" thick Steel plate?, and were we can buy it?

Ramsey Customs - turbocobra I still enjoy things like this. Never to old to learn a new trick.
yes sir
That is "AWSOME"...
Have to get some...
Who made your table?
⭕⭕ The technique you used to cut the stock, if you use a plastic razor blade and first go all the way around it that will leave a cleaner edge. 👍👍
Hello from Brazil! Just a doubt, can i use that drill bit to notch tubes?
BHZ Motovlog I bet a hole saw would be better, annular cutter's teeth are probably too big
What do you scribe the steel with?
Love your videos man especially when your "special" tools make light/fast work of certain jobs😉.
Lol thanks Andrew!
This fella must be Thor ! Did you see that metal snap off ! 😨
Cool tool ..
4:00 for this drill tools not needed oil or a cooling liquid?
used to run them in large mag drills but beyond 40 mm steel the carbide version works so much better had less issues and out lasted 2 to 1
Im having difficulties with the mallet cutting method. Despite how hard I hit the material I can’t seem to get a straight cut.. the pieces are never square. any ideas?
lol... close your eyes and swing the mallet as hard as you can!
Nice
Do you still have some of that 1 1/2" plate and 2 3/4" annular cutter?
Gavin Brown I have some of the plate left but don't have a 2.75 annular cutter but could bore it in the lathe with the four jaw chuck
Also, instead of oil, ive started using coolant in a spray bottle for virtually everything that doesn't have a coolant setup on it.
Soem great points, Thanks Steve
A bit lower speed speed may stop the chatter as well?

nothing like having a key thrown at you by the lathe...... there it is!!!
cool bits, I'm still just here reading comments.
I think there is no problem with pecking. Provided it's done right, those that advise against it possibly rammed the tool down on a peck and never tried it again.
My original comment was about using an oil can. Not sure why these guys kept replying to my comment about pecking at it.
lol yea it was that and tons of others in comments and on a message forum that my video was linked on
I cringed each time you grabbed the chips with your bare hands and tore them off the tool.. use needle nose pliers
men get callused enough where it doesn't cut you anymore
Scotty Mac 22 bull shit. He is lucky. But he will only be lucky until he looses his finger.

Damn! All you needed was to be wearing a ghillie suit to make that more dangerous!
really scrubbed a solid peace the steal hit with a malet and presto really what's the trick oh yeah it's a Jedi light saber !!
Lol, yes sir David!
couldnt give a toss about your broach ,,,, where can i get a hammer like that though ,,, lol
tom thompson black magic
Whats wrong with Pecking?
The chatter when the bit first makes contact probably wears the bit down more than when it's continuously cutting.
what ever happed to the mustang?
I made a video on it just a few weeks ago. ruclips.net/video/xrnLyaeUx2U/видео.html
thegrandmarkie a
That was amazing how you fractured that flat bar like a brick.
I have that same square btw lol
whAT brad milling machine is that
Its a Cincinnati Hortizonal/Verical
Man...I scribed a line an I been hitting this thing with a hammer for hours now...how'd you do that?
Naw, just kidding. But I did get my son to beat on it for a minute
lol, you have to hit it just right!

yep- this guy is an A&E admission waiting to happen...
Next time pay attention to your hand position and it would look almost flawless
its vertical and horizonal
exactly, 2 separate spindles
you cracked off a section of that bar with a plastic mallet?
wut!?
lol nah, just some tricky video editing. I was copying "this old tony" who does similar things a lot in his videos here on youtube
@@turbocobra You should clearly mention that fake cut in the video or description or some novice or nitty-wit get it to be real and get pissed off when they can't do it.
April Fools Day came early.
WHY.
I'M SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS OF TINY😢🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤔🤗
why didnt you just scribe a line on it and smack it with a hammer like the beginning ???????
you would have saved a 13 minute vid
good point!
A hole hawg... Big deal? Never worked in a large jobbing shop!?
it's a rotobroach. pick an up on the tool truck lol
Scotty Mac 22 'Rotabroach' is a trade name. Mag-drill cutter is more commonly used., Much as a vacuum cleaner is known as a 'Hoover' to some folks.....
manos3790 if you want to get technical, mag drill cutter is more incorrect than rotobroach, annular cutter would be the actual tool type name
commercials like a TV show yuck , thanks for the Adblock reminder
LOL that was a joke right? A good trick though.
Toooo FAST my man, 300 RPM MAX, = NO CHATTER !!!
See, what would you do without my pedantic comments? You'd still be using the wrong tool for the job.
Exactly! lol
Nice try I saw the teeth marks in the mail l metal
You got me!
Where's Delaney? I don't trust you as much. She was schooling you. Unsubscribe. Hahaha.
Lol, no doubt. Easy work like this she allows me to do, she comes in for all the serious stuff!

LOL worst edit ever for your mallet joke. And i can tell you by experience unless your cutting 18g sheet metal those bits are rats nests.
You got a thumbs down when you tried to do a stupid editing/magic trick at 3:08. Booooo. Lame.
I get hundreds of thumbs down on most videos and i do things to intentionally get thumbs down, youtube actually pays me more money for each thumbs down, so thank you for that!
You wish.
Whatever is the matter with you, I hope it's not catching! Lighten up.
Thumbs down for being a buzzkill. Go back into the office, rookie.
bahahahahaha, someone doesn't get the joke
