Because of this game I will never back another Portal game on Kickstarter. The game is basically just a reprint with miniatures and it took about 3 years to deliver with some of the worst communication I’ve ever had for a Kickstarter. The game itself is really good.
I totally understand that, but I'll also say that there's no such thing as just a reprint when you're changing the amount that they did even just component wise, I don't think it should have taken as long as it did... But it's not just ordering a reprint, there's a lot of quality control that has to go into it.
When you back on Gamefound or Kickstarter you gotta be patient. They added a massive load of scenarios which all have to be balanced and play tested. That is a massive amount of work.
Yeah, they are very similar in many aspects. But, the theme difference is what will sway people one way or the other. This War of Mine is constant misery and horror. The only "good" situation is when you find something useful in a sea of horror and madness which is NOT fictional. Robinson has more of that "we are masters of our own fate" feeling, living in the wild... it has its share of misery, but it comes from the nature itself and the setting is uplifting. In "This War of Mine", if you have an ounce of empathy while you play, it is a terrible feeling... as it should be! The only way you are having a good time is if you forget what you are playing and just look at the numbers/resources and min/maxing them. Which is fine, but that's not how that game was intended to be played.
Love Robinson Crusoe. One of those games were the cards and dice can screw you but I never feel cheated by it. Great story told in this game. Don’t have and won’t be the collectors though but good to see.
I passed on this one, the plastic bits did not seem to add to the experience for me. It worked out, I just found a copy of the base game at my local used bookstore for $25, so that seemed like a win to me. Can't wait to try it. Edit: Was that a call out @ 12:03 ? LOL
I love this game, but it is very difficult. I second the Dized tutorial as very helpful. Honestly, I only backed the veteran upgrade pack and I'm still regretting getting the minis since I already have a good storage solution and now I have a mostly empty box with minis. I'll probably try to find a smaller expansion box I can transfer them to instead. The mission book and introduction how to play will absolutely get some use though, so happy about that.
This video was SO much fun to watch... was laughing out loud so many times. Stream of consciousness recordings are always interesting to watch for me and this one did not disappoint. Thanks for making this one! My copy of this hasn't arrived yet but I'm looking forward to when it does. 😊
Strong recommendation for new players to follow "easier' mode and include Dog in 2P games, Friday in 3P+ games, and don't do true solo (2-handing is simple enough). You'll get the exact same gameplay experience, just slightly less punishing. Enjoy!
@@Nezbo Totally get it, I imagine it is fun indeed! However, the rules changes are noteworthy and it's often very hard solo, whereas I'm making suggestions to gently onboard new players X) I think this is a rare game where making it easier with Friday/Dog doesn't truly do anything to lessen the experience/theme.
Mine came in but didnt open it for a few weeks since I dreaded setup, but they really slimmed it down! My fav inclusion is the scenario book, was always fussed the original only came with 3. Really excited to try the R'lyeh one
This one took so long that I ended up cancelling my pledge. I also back fewer games now and have never regretted cancelling a pledge. Hardly backed anything last year, but this year has started with a BANG! And find myself getting sucked into a lot of kickstarter campaigns!
I got my copy yesterday. I love the look, yet am disappointed with the feel of the components. I am very disappointed that the instructions didn't come with a glossary. Plus there are no instructions on how to put everything inside the big box.
So many boxes. Looks like I'll need to buy a new kallax. :) I don't know if I'll ever back Portal after this campaign, but I am still very excited to get this and play it!
I just bought the second edition used but never played. I am loving playing solo with three characters after watching Shaggy on Totally Tabled. It made my first playthrough smooth with only a couple checks of the rule book. I lost in only 60 minutes! I think that the rules in the second edition make sense if you fill in perceived gaps with thematic sense.
LOL - You da man!! Indecisive about being indecisive!!! Who's on 1st, what's on 2nd... I don't know, 3rd base...! :) :) :) Love you man, keep up the good work!!! :D :D :D
"Immersive Save Sheets".... let me put the emphasis on the last "s" in that statement on their add-on.."Mystery Tales Promos". Yet we both seem to have been sent 1 sheet. Bait and switch much? I guess we're just expected to take our 1 sheet and scan it for reprinting. Why not just send us the pdf and let us print on demand. Maybe they did in fact do that. I'd have to poke around to see if that is published somewhere. I tend to miss these kind of freebies in the updates. Anyway Its a tiny tiny tiny nitpick but watching your opening did at least confirm for me that we're in the same boat. Overall it looks awesome. Looking forward to one day settling down to actually play games until then I'll vicariously game through my favorite influencers. ;)
The adventure book and thematic decks of cards are great. The minis are worthless. I already removed them from the box and one day I might use them in a Pirate Borg RPG.
This is definitely a good game, and some scenarios can be very punishing, even if you "cheat" by adding both Friday and the dog to the multiplayer game. Sadly, I have the first edition, so from what I can tell, none of the expansions would work with my copy, and this project was too much for me to want to rebuy the game with all the stuff at once. I also definitely didn't feel like this game needed all the minis and extra upgrades, although some (like the resources) are pretty nice.
Ive been thoroughly enjoying my copy the past few days! Just a heads up, and I'm sure you know this but I have to reiterate, this game is DIFFICULT. This game is not nice to players. It will not baby you. One small mercy is that if you got the Book of Adventures, there are slightly easier versions of some of the scenarios (like Castaways, for example where the weather is held off until a couple of rounds later which makes a HUGE difference). Overall though, if you're not into games that constantly beat you down and give you little hope, and is even often straight up unfair, then avoid this one. Winning is not what this game is about in my opinion. I, for one, enjoy the long struggle and grind because it makes the victories just that much sweeter for me. Plus, it's not like you'll never win. After a couple of games, you get used to what resources to prioritize in a given scenario and things like that to a point where you'll most likely get a win eventually.
@BoardGameCo Then it may just not be a game for you. Especially with what you said about This War of Mine. In terms of difficulty, that game has the same feeling as this one. Robinsin of course isn't as depressing theme-wise, but you'll still feel the constant stings of bad things constantly happening and having to deal with putting out fires while also trying to achieve the objectives of the scenario. Since you have it, give it a shot of course! You never know. Maybe the theme/gameplay can win you over despite the difficulty. Also, there are multiple ways (especially with the Gamefound content) to make the game easier/more manageable like adding some/all of the animal companions, for example.
Your description of This War of Mine is exactly what Robinson Crusoe is. The system is fantastic but for me the whole game was just trying withstand as much punishment as long as you can. Didn't enjoy that.
Honestly, from what I see, the only thing of worth here are new scenarios. And I am guessing someone will be posting them online for printing anyway. There is no substantial increase in quality, miniatures bring nothing to the game and experience (except the inflated price)... I really don't see a big point of purchasing this. Even if you don't have a game already, I think it is better to go and find the standard version rather than this. Cheaper, same thing basically. 95% of it at least. It is one of the worst Collector Edition versions of a game that I've seen so far. There is nothing BAD in it, it is just rather pointless to buy this over a standard version unless you are REALLY into miniatures.
I don't think anything you're saying is wrong... But I also think that's generally how board game deluxifications work. They're inherently not essential, but they can be very cool and something that people want.
Wow the worst designed game gets a reprint. If you dont know just "build" as a safe action every turn. But hey don't worry you will literally take the same actions over and over all game long
While I hear what you're saying, it's hard to deny the ratings on it. There are plenty of popular games that didn't resonate with me, I usually don't automatically assume that they're terrible.. I usually assume I'm the exception
Yeah I dont get it. Its a flawed design. The whole game is taking risks and interacting with the cards but if you want to win just take safe actions and dont interact with the cards and therefore the game at all. @@BoardGameCo
Decided not to back this as i already have the original with the Voyage of the Beagle expansion which works just fine. As far as i remember i don't think they added enough for me to upgrade (which is rare) as i buy everything new, newer, newest cause im a moron.
Being indecisive about “am I indecisive or not” was legit hilarious. If that was intentional, that’s some quality comedic talent
Lol thank you :) definitely intentional...but I fear my comedy is too infrequent for any career in it.
Because of this game I will never back another Portal game on Kickstarter. The game is basically just a reprint with miniatures and it took about 3 years to deliver with some of the worst communication I’ve ever had for a Kickstarter. The game itself is really good.
It was Gamefound.

Dized has a really good tutorial for Robinson Crusoe that definitely helped me get a hang of rules and gameplay
Good to know thank you!
This game is a warm cup of coffee on a rainy day for me personally. This War of Mine reminds me very fondly of it.
Lol...I don't like this war of mine :)

Your being indecisive about if you were indecisive was the pinnacle of my day (to be fair, it was a long day)
Lol I was hoping that would crack a smile for someone:)
It was fun to paint the miniatures. They have alot of details. I like the Octopus on the back of the cook. Gonna play this tomorrow.
Enjoy it :)

yeah still waiting on mine - crazy time line 3 years in counting - also backed adventures in Neverland - even crazier nearly 4 years waiting!!!!
I love this game, but it is very difficult. I second the Dized tutorial as very helpful. Good to know on dized thanks
"Like I said already" with the knife opening towards us was a cool threatening move. I know that intention wasn't there, it was just cool.
This video was SO much fun to watch... was laughing out loud so many times. Stream of consciousness recordings are always interesting to watch for me and this one did not disappoint. Thanks for making this one! My copy of this hasn't arrived yet but I'm looking forward to when it does. 😊

I most of the time include Friday and dog in any play count games and we still lose, but at least it feels like we had a chance...
I think solo with Friday and Dog is fun :) But definitely a harder/tighter experience than when having more pawns.
@@Nezbo Totally get it, I imagine it is fun indeed! Don't loose the spy glass, they are basically a save me when all hope is lost. It is a tough game, you will need them. :)
Lol good to know :)

I'm excited to table it, the only question is when I prioritize it 🙂
This one took so long that I ended up cancelling my pledge. I also back fewer games now and have never regretted cancelling a pledge. Hardly backed anything last year, but this year has started with a BANG! And find myself getting sucked into a lot of kickstarter campaigns!
It be like that sometimes. I genuinely thought Voidfall would never ship 😂 took them near 3 yrs
I got my copy yesterday. I love the look, yet am disappointed with the feel of the components.
I am very disappointed that the instructions didn't come with a glossary. Plus there are no instructions on how to put everything inside the big box.
I get that on both counts
Maybe I am old school, but did glossaries go the way of the Dodo?
So many boxes. Looks like I'll need to buy a new kallax. :) I don't know if I'll ever back Portal after this campaign, but I am still very excited to get this and play it!

Please can you do the review of clash of cultures monumental ed? ppl say that they changed a lot of things other than including expansions
I plan on it
man, im glad i only got the base game + book of adventures tier
looking at this i was worried i was gonna get all these boxes lol
No I only have to be calm until I got my copy... waiting for so long, now everybody got his copy and I still have to wait, wait, wait...
I get that :(
I downloaded the app for this game. Has anyone used it yet? If so, is it good?
Not I sadly

Is this similar to 7th Continent?
steep learning curve, but you have developed your game skills a lot Alex.
I'm not just worried about learning hut about whether I like it

Ya I'm hoping I don't find this one unnecessarily punishing
I beat the Castaways adventure once. Did I cheat a little to do so? I'll never tell. 😊
Lol cheating at solo is just playing with power ups
i steered away from this... damn it..
@warpo007 i agree, i had to remove about 1/2 the adventure cards just to make a "beginner friendly" game. still a 10% chance of failure
Yups
