I hope you see this and can help with an answer! When I live paint a compounded vector it "releases" and undoes the compound vector?? I realize this is important for doing the shadows/highlights etc. So what is the purpose of compounding the vector at all then and is it possible to compound a vector that is colored with live paint or would this never need to be done anyways? Thanks for helping me understand this.
#1: When you say compound vector you are referring to a Compound Shape vs. an Error Message about Complex Appearance? #2: Who is telling you to compound shapes while you are still coloring and adding values? You will want these all separate so you can cut and edit individual shapes (unless you are applying a gradient across multiple shapes) **Compound Shapes is not the Same as Uniting Paths
Hi ! I just want to ask about the "Complex Appearance.." I already did the closing the gaps and there's actually no gaps but still the "complex appearance thing" is still appearing. Hope you can help me. I'm new in Adobe Illustrator. Thank You !
You will need to expand the brushes layer or duplicate the live layer and remove the stroke or brushes in order to color. Live Paint will remove the "complex appearance" Are you following along to the step by step version?
First thing I want you to double check is that there isn't a white fill on any layer above. Check your inking layer: the default is usually a white fill which can mess with other layers and steps. The Layer is showing color so it sounds like the live paint worked.
@@JasonSecrest thank you. as I took a break I press control Y my mistake thinking is the short cut to go forward. after I sorting it out everything was fine
Thank you. I noticed in the finished preview of the duck illustration there are some half-tone dots used as shading on the side of the ducks head. Do you explain how you made those in some other video?
We go through adding the halftones and values in the 3rd and 4th video of the Duck Challenge series. The 3rd video is coloring and adding values. The 4th video is where we add on the halftones.
Jason Secrest I did not find the half tone shading in the duck videos, but I did find in a cat video. I work in screen printing and this will come in handy. I never thought about adding a gradient to vector half tones. I usually make half tones in Photoshop, save as bit maps, and bring them into illustrator. I'm just finding your channel. Lots of good stuff on here. I'm always trying to learn new things in illustrator. Thank you so much
Wow, I just download and mine has significantly fewer tools than yours... have I download a wrong file? ps: I specifically searched for AI 2020 to download...
The Live Paint Bucket will look for Enclosed Spaces. 1. Look to see if you have areas separated out, enclosed, or gap options modified. 2. Make sure you are not clicking on a color swatch when the entire object is selected. Click on Live Paint Bucket first before clicking on a Color Swatch. You can even deselect the object after making a Live Paint Group.
I realise after painting, and I want to edit the lines by moving it or editing, the fill are unable to move with the object. also rotating have two objects one rotated but another doesnt move. But when I use keyline view, its only one object. I am not sure if this is a bug and having a hard time understanding how it really works
hi Jason, when I select all then live paint make, my brush strokes still disappear and ruin my work. your brush strokes remained but mine did not even though I did the same thing
I would color on a separate layer than the lines if you want to modify them. You can duplicate out the same layer (remove brushes) and then color and a Layer (Below) your Brushes Layer. Live Paint will remove the Brushes (you will get an Error Message about Complex Appearances and that will be Lost.) Paint Bucket will color based on the Path- so it will give you a different result than coloring the expanded layer.
Troubleshooting Live Paint: 1. Is everything you want to color selected? 2. Are layers locked out? Check hidden Layers? Check layers above especially ink layer? 3. Check Gap Options. If your gaps are too big it will not color. View-Live Paint Gaps. You can also modify gap options under Live Paint and within the Live Paint Bucket Options.
Jason Secrest, where are you!?! I KNOOOOOOWWWWW you're gonna post a video on the Illustrator Ipad App. I will just be sitting here, in the corner hugging my ipad, rocking back and forth & whistling until you do. I want to see the features from the perspective of someone who is used to using illustrator with a tablet. Thanks, in advance!☺
I don't own an iPad and unfortunately it is not on my Christmas list. The previous version of the app was pretty bad, so I would have to be sold on the App version of Illustrator before recommending it to someone over the desktop version and a tablet.
Love this character. Thanks for sharing these techniques!
Jason, great video. Just spent an hour watching your tutorials. Great content. Thanks for sharing.

@@JasonSecrest yes I was following our prof's video lesson. Thank you I'll try what you suggested :)
Glad to see you back!
I have problem i doing live paint to my object but my object remain white but in my layer box in the right is showing the colour, how to fix it

You need to go to window - toolbar- advanced
Why is it that whenever I try to fill color in a particular area, it colors the whole thing?
The Live Paint Bucket will look for Enclosed Spaces.
1. Look to see if you have areas separated out, enclosed, or gap options modified.
2. Make sure you are not clicking on a color swatch when the entire object is selected. Click on Live Paint Bucket first before clicking on a Color Swatch. You can even deselect the object after making a Live Paint Group.

If you are still in a Live Paint Group, you will have to Expand and Ungroup before editing individual shapes or lines.
@@JasonSecrest I see thanks
Thanks a lot...it really helped

Expand your brushes. Did you go through the Adding Brushes + Editing step?
@@JasonSecrest Yes! Thank you so much
mine dosent do the select fill thing what am i doing wrong
Maybe the shape isn't completely closed?
Can I modify my lines again once I finished using paint bucket???
I would color on a separate layer than the lines if you want to modify them. You can duplicate out the same layer (remove brushes) and then color and a Layer (Below) your Brushes Layer. @@JasonSecrest okay, I get it! Thank you very much. 🙏
ive gotta question the video but not everything in the layer is getting colored how do i fill in everything in it
