Have been eagerly waiting for this discussion given all the discourse around the film. Fruitful discussion and good panel as always. I love how all your panel members ( based on the content I watched till date ) are calm, open to opinions, don't try hard to rub off their opinions on to others yet firmly convey their point, basically good speakers and especially good listeners, which I notice most of the panel members in many other settings generally lack. Good panels like these serve the main purpose of having discussion and makes it very pleasant for the listeners. Really appreciate the panel's interview etiquette and definitely the team's pick.
P.S - Personal review in the reply section of this comment. If anyone is interested, check it out.

These are my thoughts after watching the movie and this discussion.
Before that, a little dive into my perspective before watching the film.
I wanted to watch Baby in theaters but for some reason I couldn't. After seeing people's polarizing opinions, senseless reactions on the social media and director's grief in interviews that his sincere attempt and good intentions have been misunderstood by the audience, I empathized with the director. On top of that, one of the critics called it a feminist film, all this made the film a must-watch for me. From what i gathered reg the story outline from the director's interview - It is about is about childhood love, the guy fails 10th, turns into an auto-driver but the girl goes on to pursue engineering, where due to an unusual incident in her life and the usual real-life-like bad influences, she chooses to cheat on her boyfriend as she thought, that was the only way out. Coz she had no one to turn to and definitely not her boyfriend as he is very aggressive, abusive and all. Finally she confesses to her boyfriend but the boyfriend keeps on saying that his love is true and all but lacks the maturity to accept her. This is the brief I gathered from a couple of his interviews. After all this discourse I initially felt this is feminist film, on paper it felt like one. Reason I thought this is a feminist story is, this story has a space for a girl to make a mistake. I felt like this story finally treated a girl like a human, where any human irrespective of gender makes a mistake. See, feminism is about equality, and nowadays it is mostly centered around equality in opportunities. But equality should be beyond opportunities like perceiving one gender's mistake as human and the other's as a sin is condemn-able. I liked how this story has touched this point. Again we don't know if this was the director's core intention as he mentioned in an interview that storyline developed from the horrible Salem incident. I also drew parallels in my mind to the Malayalam film 'Hridhayam', a coming-of-age story of Arun, who made bad decisions in college, hurted two women Darshana and Maya who genuinely loved him. He was almost very close to cheating Darshana and Maya( reg Maya in that scene where he asks her to come to a hotel, but her senior understands his intentions and saves Maya, I used the word save because Arun never loved Maya, her existence to him was to justify his ego and insecurity and revenge over Darshana). When Arun marries and Darshana doesn't move on, I read so many comments like she's clingy and generalising it to women. But very surprising here in Baby movie, when Anand doesn't move on, it is conceive as true love. When Arun marries, he welcomes life. But when Vaishnavi married, audience called her a cheat and what-not! Typical hypocrisy I thought and blamed the audience for totally for not understanding the film( before watching the film just based on their reactions and director's interview)

Now let's dive into the after-thoughts.
I loved how the director established the Vaishnavi's and Anand's characters in the first half, especially their weakness( couldn't think of the apt word here, consider it as innate human emotional limitation instead like a negative shade), weakness as in if you see Vaishnavi's character, she liking a rich lifestyle is both aspirational but also sort of a weakness, which is established in a scene where she leaves her friend, Kusuma on their way to home from college when Viraj offers her a lift. He kinda insulted or ignored Kusuma in a not-so-polite way by only offering lift to Vaishnavi. If Vaishnavi were someone who didn't find cars and all interesting, she would decline the lift at the moment although she likes him because she doesn't want her friend to feel left out.
Similarly in Anand's character, he has established from the beginning through his mother's character that he does lack certain empathy, ( I'm not saying a 10th class boy who lost his father must act like a mature adult, just trying to interpret the director's writing) and one more brilliant point is, Anand is a Trivikam's fan, i.e he cinematic in real life. He fails to acknowledge that those cinematic writings which he deeply admires which, may not be close to reality, are seeping into his world-view. The director keeps establishing the fact that his admiration translates more into a world-view which is drifting away from reality rather than into poetry. I mean we know for a fact how few people who deeply admire cinema are like, they are more dramatic, more punch-lines, more poetry, too much reading into normal situations, weird interpretations out of no-where. His trait was established in the first half and also seemed consistent in the 2nd half. He also establishes that he is short-tempered, verbally abusive, also if he is lil off balance for a long time, he might cause serious harm as well.
Now, what personally didn't work for me(other than the points mentioned in the pod) is mainly the inconsistency in the character arcs especially Anand and Viraj. Viraj, according to the director, is a manipulative guy, who uses flattery and his financial status i.e gifts as a means to manipulate Vaishnavi. Such a guy, who behaves absurdly like blackmailing her and all, he initially cries when she offers to come to his home and then immediately behaves like a psycho forcing her to wear a saree and all. I can't wrap my head around the fact that a character like him who did want what Vaishnavi offered as a means of settlement, why the hell did he cry? Such a disconnect.
But the major disconnect was Anand's character arc, who comes off as someone who has borderline personality disorder, how does he become such a calm person in the second half .Ala manushulu maara koodadhu ani kaadu, maarpu machide gaani . Again going back to the Hridhyam example, there is change in Arun's character because he has witnessed two deaths, Maya's father and Selva and also mainly because of a strong influence like Selva and the community around. But, here, what has transformed a guy like Anand? Given his background and limited exposure to the world, who is not okay with his girlfriend going to pub, abusing his girlfriend, who gets frustrated when Vaishnavi doesn't lift calls, has anger issues, is suddenly okay with the concept of break in a relationship, just after one argument in the interval. Real-life characters antunnapudu, second-half lo kooda real life lo unnatu unadali kada. Other than his rage where he takes a knife to kill her, I felt the character arc is inconsistent.
Also I felt there were few unnecessary dialogues which seemed like director taking side( whether he did intentionally or not), which could have been avoided or modified given the sensitivity of story the director chose. For example in that scene, where Anand realizes and feels guilty after his mother's death. He compares his mother's love and Vashnavi's and says a line, 'Idhi prema ra ledha adhi prema aa ra'. Despite his young age, it boils down to his lack of empathy and incapability to look after his mother, isn't it his choice to give your time and attention a girl his loved rather than to his mother who was always kind and had no fault other than being born deaf and mute. What is the point of venting it on Vaishnavi? Suppose she did cheat him intentionally. Even then he don't have any right to blame Vaishnavi completely for how he treated his mom. Ofc this dialog shows his immaturity to realize what went wrong from his side. The last part of second half is mostly filled with such dialogs, saturating with only Anand's perspective, which seemed like the director took side but all those dialog just reflect his immaturity. Obviously there was no proper justice done to Vaishnavi's character, this cannot be definitely defended under the umbrella of subtlety. The director could have definitively done a better job here.
The director starting off the film with Anand and closing with Anand( despite Vaishnavi's long stare) and the quote reg first love's impact, doesn't fit off well why in the first place he wanted to explore the Salem incident and the character's not-so-mature behavior given their age. Is this a story about him exploring what might have been in the girl's perspective in the Salem's incident or is it about first love and it's deep impact till last breath. I feel he could have blended these both only if he took us into Vaishnavi's head in the second half.
Now coming to the point of why it was perceived by the audience the way it was perceived(my opinion). The primary mistake made by makers is how they cut the trailer. The trailer cut is really taking a side. What else would you expect the audience to perceive given the trailer. Second, was obvious the film itself, not giving voice to Vaishnavi's character in the second half and saturation of Anand's perspective towards the end. Third, marketing of the film when it released on OTT. The notifications reg the movie were mostly again in Anand's and Viraj's victimization favor. I feel when you chose a sensitive topic like this extra care has to be taken in the marketing perpective, ofc not all reactions can be gauged and controlled but these were the factors which the makers could control, right? Atleast after OTT release. Also not to forget that they have been in cinema and this is not the first film where there is suddenly hypocrisy around women. More care would have been highly appreciated.
I have no hate towards the director, this is purely personal opinion and perspective, voicing out because and for the love of cinema, Telugu cinema. In fact I have so much respect towards the director for his journey and how he has re-invented himself from 'Hrudhaya Kaleyam' to 'Baby', with a National Award awarding film like 'Color Photo' in his credit. More power to him. Just the negativity towards Vaishnavi the character and especially the actor in real life is very disturbing, and what I felt is, it totally not the audience who are at fault.
Thank you for this, team! Effective and lovely one as always.
P.S: Sorry for such a lengthy comment. But whoever has made this far thank you so much for your time and patience. I'll work on my writing skills next time. I really don't have any energy left to edit and make it concise this time.

@@sree_G Thanks for the kind words. Hridayam analogy was on point.
Couple of points i wanted to highlight here :
      1. Viraj is basically a mondi pilladu . Vadiki kavalsindi dorike daaka edaina chestadu. Anduke bordeline pyschotic annam .
      2. Irrespective of the marketing and trailer, director cinema lone side theskunnadu.

    • @sree_G

@@ChitraAlochana Yeah, I totally agree with your second point that director took a side in the movie. I personally felt that too. The reason I'm giving the director benefit of doubt is coz of his intentions. To add to your argument, he has confessed in Film Companion interview that he has a problem with procrastination and he wrote dialogs/scenes just before the shoot. He also said there's no script for this film. Although they are very human traits, I felt he could be more responsible with a film like this. Actually, the marketing and trailer add more to argument that he has taken side. I agree he has failed with maintaining a neutral perspective in Baby. There's no doubt about it. The reason I'm giving him a benefit of doubt is his intentions, they seemed good despite his improper execution due to his own limitations. I had a hope, maybe if he didn't procrastinate like he confessed and if script was ready before the film, it wouldn't the same. Didn't want to jump into conclusion that he did take side intentionally in this movie. I wanted to wait for his future projects to decide on that. Coz no one's intentions can be hidden for longer, especially with filmmakers.
And, thanks a lot for patiently reading such a long comment!

Ironically, Sai Rajesh underwriting/unclear communication is what is driving the film to more audiences due to polarising responses. It feels similar to companies or people posting typos/misinformation intentionally so that people will comment and engage more. Though, in this case. It's probably unintentional.
