I'd noticed this when jamming with my bass to Prodigy songs too. Liam listens to enough music that he understands, even if only subconsciously, how real bass, guitars and drums should sound, which is why his electronic music sounds so natural and groovy. One of my favourite ones to do is Rockweiler. Loads of slides and bends to play around with.
I love anything that blurs the line between bass and synth; definitely going to dig out these records, learn these weird lines and maybe even try to get these sounds!
This was very cool. Bass is bass whether it's on a keyboard or a traditional bass guitar. Cool to see how these synth bass lines can be translated on an actual bass. Thanks for sharing this Paul.
Always thought "Firestarter" would be a more straightforward and fun line to rock out to. Also, always been fascinated by the pulsating, "thrumming" bass in "Breathe" as it is so effective and so odd.
They worked with "Pop will eat it's self/PWEI", a lot in the early days to move towards that Electric-rock sound! There was some old footage of liam, playing drums/guitar and bass plus keys/Snyth/Dj..! Not sure if it on Y/T though, it's from way back in about 92/3🤘
Now this episode was quite the surprise. Now that you've gone over the bass in The Prodigy, you've got to go over Squarepusher who's an insane bassist that shreds over EDM tracks.
I am a bass player and die hard The Prodigy fan but somehow i never ever think about to play some bass lines from them hahaha. Brain sometimes work in a really strange ways
Wow, this video is such a great idea (as well as execution). Translating electronic music onto a string instrument is not something I would've thought of for inspiration, but now I wanna grab my bass and jam along to the Prodigy.
I've messed around with making music for about two decades, but never had the opportunity to use real instruments into the software I use (mainly FL Studio) its definitely because of this that I always struggle to create a good bass line, I think that just randomly clicking away entering notes into a virtual keyboard is not as natural, even at all natural, than playing an instrument, one day, I might even learn how to play an instrument 😂 but saying all this, I don't do to bad,
Evening! Been listening to your "play like such and such..." bass lessons for a while now, think it's rubbing off! Have your ear hairs lasered off over @BoringDystopia You should broaden out into what effects they use, too. Thanks for the inspiration, man!
When you added real bass over it it made me realize how much better this band would sound with real bass. Was never a fan of electronic music like this or this band. But interesting none the less.
This is an excellent vid. May I offer some suggestions? Chi Cheng (Deftones) Lou Barlow (Dinosaur Jr.) Les Claypool (Primus) Robert Trujillo (Metallica) Shavo Odadjian (System Of A Down) Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle) Thx! And nice vid 👍🏽
@@jensvide777 that's also true but I reckon you can get the same sort of effect with a octaver, I use a digitech whammy and it can get that sort of effect.

Massive respect for putting together this "non-traditional" episode.

Bass cover with tabs of Prodigy, please

Very creatively inspiring episode.
No bass guitar, and definitely one of my favourite episode's so far. Very inspiring 👏
The first bassline gives me Hooky vibes
That was a great breakdown. I loved the Prodigy.

Very interesting idea and a great execution as always 😁
One of my favourite Prodigy basslines is the one from 'No Good (Start the Dance)', it's simple, but effective.
Great episode
Good stuff !!!
I am a bass player and die hard The Prodigy fan but somehow i never ever think about to play some bass lines from them hahaha. Brain sometimes work in a really strange ways
Old head checking in, and I've found that a lot uptempo edm has some surprisingly mellow bass lines.

the prodigy forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
❤❤❤
You really should do one about David J from Bauhaus. One of the most interesting bass players in post punk.
Great episode. I humbly request an episode on Tommy stinson ( the replacements) Greg Norton ( husker du) or an episode on smashing pumpkins or hole.
Great content, as usual!
Paul, then what about making bass habits of depeche mode synth bass? What do you think man?

when played with the bass, they sound like Death from Above 1979

You should broaden out into what effects they use, too.
Thanks for the inspiration, man!
hey paul, read you comments. i WANT STEEL PANTHER!
Any chance of getting a james jamerson on donald Dunn episode
Liked the "Play like....." series of bass videos. However, have you considered breaking down Mick Karn's playing?
Now let's all bust out our TB-303s and program some basslines.
Check out action radar on AONO, it's staccato rhythm shapes the songs rhythym
Thankyou for all the effort you put into your videos, have u thought of giving DuG Pinnick a feature?
You should do The Strokes!
Colin greenwood from radiohead would be a very good video
When you added real bass over it it made me realize how much better this band would sound with real bass. Was never a fan of electronic music like this or this band. But interesting none the less.
an Candlemas episode?
This is an excellent vid. May I offer some suggestions?
Chi Cheng (Deftones)
Lou Barlow (Dinosaur Jr.)
Les Claypool (Primus)
Robert Trujillo (Metallica)
Shavo Odadjian (System Of A Down)
Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle)
Thx! And nice vid 👍🏽
Seconded on Lou Barlow! He's always reminded me a little of Lemmy with his style.
I was gonna tell you how you missed.
Fuel My Fire
But I think that one was played on a real bass.
When you play some of the bass lines, you seem to hit the wrong notes on the pattern. So I went listening, and ... yeah, you missed.
nice crusty bass neck.....
Fat of the Land is a gateway drug that no-one can resist.
1:08 most ironic thing about that clip is that bassline Deadmau5's talking about can & was played on a bass by Davie504
Depends on what he meant. In the original song there are two basslines, one low and one high which you can't really play at the same time.
@@jensvide777 that's also true but I reckon you can get the same sort of effect with a octaver, I use a digitech whammy and it can get that sort of effect.
@@frippfink That would work if the low and high basslines were the same, but they aren't.
@@jensvide777 that's true, it gets close but it's not the real thing
