1. Mind Map: Select a topic and write down all subjects, questions and literature you can think of and come up with key words
2. Key words and literature: Write down important words and phrases and search through archives and databases
3. Reading: Start reading the found texts and check the bibliographies and footnotes for further readings
4. Capture notes: While reading, take notes and write down questions that pop up, cite them properly. The notes should include quotes (page numbers!), made arguments and counter arguments and questions
5. Outline: Write down an outline for your essay based on what you read
6. Write the introduction and set up the central arguments; when you get stuck, get back into the literature and find inspiration
7. Paragraphs: Keep the central questions and arguments in mind while writing! And use quotes to support your claims; write clearly and concisely
8. Conclusion: Write what your essay has covered and restate your central arguments and how you included them in your essay, add a concluding statement and contribution
9. Revision: Leave it for a day or send it off to someone; catch errors and check that your arguments work and are supported
10. Submit it!

Perfection 🙌🏽 also, when thinking of your topic think “what do ppl argue about?” And let that wander in your mind for a while…how do u normally try to win your arguments you have with ppl? If you claim something without anything to back it up, you’ll lose that argument
Remember that your topic is not a fact per se but an opinion/argument that can be SUPPORTED by facts. Once you do this, you can map out your paragraphs each one with a main supporting factual topic

Thank you so much for this video, it is a lifesaver! I'm a STEM major so I typically don't have to write too many papers, and this has led me to have not-so-strong writing. I always struggle with staying on topic and keeping my papers clear and concise, different points and topics just jumble around my head like alphabet soup lol. But writing down the topics physically definitely helps clear my mind and be able to see which points might not be as strong.

I really loved your breakdown and how you showed your own personal process! I'm an Anthropology major and I'm a little nervous to write my first research paper since 2016. I didn't do so well last time, but I think I've corrected some bad thinking/ habits I had back then and I feel more capable this time around. Asses the prompt (or select a topic.)
Research generally starts with a research question.
**Mind Maps:**
Write down a roadmap with all the ideas (subjects, questions, sources, literature) that come to your mind first.
Draw a mind map of these.
It can also help you visualize how the paper might be organized.
You can refer back to the mind map throughout the writing process to see how ideas develop.
**Keyword Search:**
Mind maps should generate some terms; these will drive your keywords, terms and phrases.
These should drive your preliminary literature search and analysis.
Write these terms down so you can check them off as you go through different search engines.
**Footnotes:**
After finding initial sources, read the footnotes.
Check the author's bibliography for additional sources.
Checking the footnotes is what separates a student from a scholar.
Take your time here.
**Organization:**
While going through literature, begin keeping some notes and writing down questions or themes that seem significant.
Use a citation software- or write them down in the proper format.
Notes should contain quotes, main arguments, supporting arguments, questions and page numbers.
This stage is crucial to remembering.
**Outline:**
After reading through the literature you should have found key primary sources and tracked some central themes.
Now you should be able to make an outline to which you then add quotes and other supporting evidence.
Your outline should allow you to structure your essay.
**Introduction:**
Now that you know how you want the essay to flow, as well as an outline, you can write an introduction.
Katelyn usually starts with anecdotes to set the tone of the essay.
You can choose to begin however you like.
If you get stuck, you may get inspiration from the best introductions in your literature.
**Body Paragraphs:**
For your body paragraphs, keep in mind your central argument and thesis statement from the introduction.
This is so that each paragraph maintains the same theme and underlying message.
Use evidence to support your claims.
Make sure everything flows.
Don't use too much jargon.
If you get stuck, get back to reading to get inspiration.
**Conclusion:**
Begin by stating what the essay has covered.
Finish by restating your central argument.
State how you supported your claims in the body of the essay.
State your concluding statement and contributions.
**Revision:**
Leave your work for a day and return to read it.
You can also send it to a friend or mentor.
Check to see small mistakes, to see if your arguments were supported, and if the essay flows well.
**Tips:**
- Check multiple online university library resources.
- Also check Google, JSTOR, WorldCat and ArchiveGrid.
- Download all articles that seem that they might be of help so that you don't lose them (and retitle them to fit the title of the article).

Thank you so much. Watching this video helped me develop a good outline for my research paper and also find good sources. Now I feel confident completing my assignment. I finished up my fall semester with an "I" letter grade because I did not complete an assignment. My professor gave me 3 months to complete and submit it. Two months have gone by and I haven't done a thing, because I was unsure of what I was doing. But thanks to this video, I gained confidence and completed in a few hours a very important part of the work that has been keeping me from doing a good job: finding good sources and creating a strong outline. Now that I'm content with how my outline turned out, I can confidently write my paper and hopefully receive a good passing grade. Thank you again. You rock!
As a student, I am expected to do a lot of hard work. However, there are times when I am not able to solve assignment questions, usually because of unclear concepts or time constraints. But as we all can agree, assignments affect our grades. Thankfully, I have Sarah helping me. She is a super-talented academic helper who never fails me. I'm in art school and though my writing skills have improved throughout college, my written assignments are typically limited to proposals, project statements, etc. I was just assigned a 13-page research paper out of the blue and it's been so overwhelming navigating where to begin. I was too late to apply for scholarships and ultimately saw Oxford as a necessary investment to get into a top-tier US PhD program. It was a big gamble but I am confident I can pay it off and am glad to say that it was hugely helpful when I applied for PhDs. I don’t think I would have gotten into Yale without it. If you need help looking into scholarships though, I’d be happy to help!
