I found your channel after using one of your books on Disraeli as a secondary source for a paper I wrote a few years ago. While you may think nobody reads your books, your research helped me get a history degree and I thank you for it.
Luke you are very kind to say that. I am delighted that my Disraeli book gave you some assistance to your degree - and hope your degree has helped you move on to something good now.
As always speaking words of wisdom. Can honestly say that you were by far the most impactful teacher I've had across all forms of education and left me with a deep love of the subject. Was contemplating this very topic of "when will it be enough" a few weeks back and so it feels incredibly precient that you post this today. In the end, it is all vanity Loving the channel -- looking forward to the next post.
How very kind of you to say that. It's very good to know that you have been inspired to carry on studying and find personal satisfaction in doing so. That is the absolute key to being content in the world so I'm glad you have found that place. And I'm very pleased that this talk struck a chord with you. If it helps you get sense of perspective on things then it has served its purpose. It sounds like you are definitely progressing in many ways.
Goals are not bad in themselves. Achieving them does bring rewards. However one cannot "succeed" in every goal. Valuing the process is as important if not more so. But as a society we are not so good at that. We are too judgemental and, as you say, narrowly focused on the outcomes alone. Thank you for your wisdom. Hopefully more can learn to be content with their fate and that of others.
Thank you for your helpful reflections. Yes one must have some goals but its important not to allow the goal to displace the process - the journey is usually at least as rewarding as the point of arrival.
Your remarks reminded me of the Koine Greek word ἁμαρτία, or “to miss the mark” as in archery. The term was translated as “sin” in the N.T., and provides some insight into what failure ( or sin) truly is, that being “ missing the mark”. What do we do when we miss our mark? Simply learn from our failure and give it another try.
Many heartfelt thanks, Sir, you speak to my condition ! Quite frankly, if you expanded this to a book (preferably a concise booklet), it would be the most important contribution to the philosophy of life since Epictetus' Enchiridion !
Oh wow that is praise indeed. Thank you! That really should motivate me. Actually I have written a short book on Conservatism which does cover some of these themes.
@@stjohnspipecasts6801 HI, how could I contact you? I want to let this brilliant video be posted on China's social media. Hope to get your approval.(didn't make money for it, just for sharing good content) Thanks!
Hi, nice video. I'm glad you're uploading. I think it would be very useful if you could link a copy of what you said in the description. I found myself wanting to reply to some comments you made and that would make it a lot easier than going back and replaying certain parts.
They are actually available on Amazon! There are three on Gladstone and Disraeli for example. Here is one Disraeli and the Art of Victorian Politics (Anthem Perspectives in History) www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1843318733/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_7KSKV8MM6PGY14A9Q1NY?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I'm a great fan of artisan mixture but I can't get that three days. So Blacksmiths blend is my current main one. Nightcap is another regular. Thanks for watching and I hope you have a good favourite tobacco too!
Is there a way to reach you privately? I head a small group of academic RUclipsrs with an aim to mutually supporting high quality educational content, and though my channel is small, if there's anyway to help give you a boost it would be my pleasure to do so.

Haven't been impressed by an idea for a long time, your reconception of failure and success is beautiful, it lets me think many things, thanks!

hi professor, that would be great to see a new video on arthur sophenhauer.
Thank you for the suggestion! I will try and get something on the way - not quite sure what though!
As a fellow academic and pipe smoker, I must ask this question. What is your favorite tobacco?
