Yes I dont see why not. I will say that to me living somewhere means being a part of that place. Many people speak English but more speak swahili. You shouldn't have any serious problems with communicating with locals while you are learning swahili. They are very patient and understanding.
Next Year educate about African principles ... Kwanzaa. Christmas just makes us poor in the west mentally and financially. Practice Kwanzaa EVERYDAY and your community will change.

Almost every one in the villages own a machete for the farm work in Africa especially Kenya where i come from.
