- Canning Stock Route 2017, part-9, finale. 4x4 Outback Australia.
This is all about the Toyota Land Cruiser Troopcarrier I drove. What's great, good and just okay. Lots about the products I used and tested on the trip, and insights into why I selected some gear.
The subject of this series:
WE HAVE JUST completed one of the world’s longest and remote public tracks. (July 2017). This is the fabled Canning Stock Route. The Canning Stock Route is long, tough, rough but beguiling in its beauty and variety.
The Canning Stock Route is a track that runs from Halls Creek in the Kimberley region of Western Australia to Wiluna in the mid-west region. With a total distance of around 1,850 km (1,150 mi) it is the longest historic stock route in the world. Once used as a route for cattle droves following a series of wells, it is now mainly used by adventure seekers looking for a challenge and solitude in the Australian outback. The last cattle drove the route in the 1930's.

The Solarpod 1k is £1800 in the UK....it would be cheaper to buy the Sun!
Maybe you can do a build on the lowest budget possible, that would be fun. This vehicle is like the best vehicle no matter the hassle or cost, but what about building one on the cheap?
I believe absolute perfection is an impossibility, you can always improve... but that truck is damn close,
Andrew you have every right to be proud of it.. hell even be smug about it
2 years in i still go watch this series. It is so beautiful and reminds one of his youth before moving to a city. Lovely videos and great sound of nature. With Covid-19 now having most people indoors (yes, I am from the future like I said) it would be really nice to do something like this and still work from home but, again, I drive city cars.
What can I say...thumbs up for the best info video. Plain real life overlanding.
Really like your work,a brand like toyota never contacted you to be apart of the 5 continents drive?!? I think that with your profile and knowledge a brand could gain so much, and like toyota boss like to said ( create ever better cars). If for exemple they give you a Land cruiser prototype to test and listen to your opinion, hope that someone on toyota thinks about it!! Continue the good work :)
I don't even think they know I exists. Besides, they might be like every other car maker I have dealt with. Only interested in fanboys and sponsored race drivers to drive their cars for media events.
Maybe you should have a good look at Evakool fibreglass fridge freezers. Far and away the best insulated box you can get. So very efficient. The only downfall is they are slightly larger externally than other fridges. And you don't need an insulated cover. Just a thought.
biggles333999 I can second that. Awesome fridge/freezer
Absolutely inspirational and aspirational Troopy and videos. Extremely well done!
Cool but how long does it take to put that shower away?
About 15 seconds.
Thanks Andrew, your vehicle must have cost you a fortune but what a nice result.
Busy modifying my Prado and your video gave me some a lot of good ideas..
You wasn’t sponsored by SnoMaster but..... you probably will be now after that review... geez!
I do not accept money from the makers of products that I review. End of story. I chose the Snomaster, not the other way round.
Looks like the boys don't mind a drop of VB...lol
Wonderful video Andrew and a great gift for 4x4 pervers and voyeurs such as myself, to overdose on what's out there. You are by far, THE world leader in this type of infotainment and movie-making. Thank you!
thanks Grant.
I would love to explore in a car like yours. But maybe it was just a dream to me
Thank you so much for the effort you have put into this CSR series, informative and thoughtful in every aspect and an absolute pleasure to watch. I hope to one day bump into you in Perth. Thank you and keep up the excellent content!
Have you tried KickAss fridges? They are an Australian-owned and manufactured product. I have used Engel and others in the past and have recently purchased a KickAss - it is impressive in my opinion. (Don't love the name, but the fridge is really good.)
what about air control Seat, same as Prime-Mover truck, Mercedes, Volvo ,be comfy..Four Wheel Drivers Australia, some firm, surely has that soughted.
Kevin Rudd glamping in the vdj78... Shoulda got the 3 inch straight thru exhaust. Such a rumble
I drive a 78 myself and like to keep everything simple. They sell this shower curtain here in Germany, too. It's € 450, almost twice what you pay for a nice Australian awning which is much larger. When I go off-roading in remote places, there's nobody there but me and perhaps my passenger. Why would I need a shower curtain? Even at festivals my campmates, male and female, had no problems rinsing themselves in the buff.
I absolutely love this troop carrier! Oh how I wish the U.S. would get these.
These beat American trucks hands down!
But why are they not available in the US?
Just loving all your movies and reviews.
Honesty and straight forward reviews that are personally researched, field tested and shared in an objective style without the BS.
Keep em coming...
What an incredible build. I appreciate you sharing the intricacies of your power setup. It's given me some excellent ideas for how to proceed with my own. Thank you!
Which is greatest landcruiser ever made ?
75 troopy diesel 1HZ or 1HDT ?
Michael pt
Just watched your build and trip videos, brilliant from start to finish and helped me, going from a recreational 4x4 to more tasteful overlanding.
I managed to find the same mechanical thermostat from china 😉
It works amazingly well!!
Can't find words to describe this amazing video.. I appreciate your work Andrew.🌷
WE can not get lead crystal batteries here in north america/Canada I hope you give us an update every so often on how well they have worked for you over time.
Was sad that not one of the big battery shops even new about lead crystal batteries...
Andrew for the stubborn zipper on the tire carry bag you can dab some ChapStick (in South Africa called LipIce) on all zippers and that will make them smooth and easy to open and close - thank you for all the great videos
I was think the same thing :-)
Dri-Lube for zips www.goss.com.au/products/15
Klaus Zungler and also you can use a candle.
Wouldn’t that cause dust build up on the zip on a dirt track? Then it gets all grimy and worse off to handle on a trip.
Sam Ting Wong - thank you
Please tell me Sir what is the full name of your shower system on the side of you Troopy with name of the boiler tank- thank you for your great videos
It has no name. Its a system combining a lot of products. The name of the boiler won't help. Its an ordinary boiler. Its the way its plumbed that is special, and I have been asked not to reveal its details. Sorry.
Davin Ellicson - you are right it is very disappointing
4xoverland why can’t you reveal the way it’s plumbed? Or the product name? How about telling us where we can purchase it or a similar system. If you had it done by someone else at least tell us who to go to in order to obtain the same or similar system for our vehicles. Why all the secrecy?
Duoetto 12v/240v water heater
Can you swap the positioning of the German pull down back door table with the fire starter on the opposite door? Doing so would allow you to keep the drawer and table open at the same time. Just spin 180 degrees to move seamlessly between the two. You only need the fire starter for a few minutes at a time so putting it on the other door makes more sense.
I hope that this is possible.
I have really enjoyed this series. Doing a review and being transparent about sponsors, reviews etc is very helpful.
Matthew 24:4 I thought that but there is a handle on the inside of the left hand door that would be obscured by the table thingy.
Its not. The doors are not the same size.
Great documentation, great truck! I'm interested in the fuel consumption on- and off road!
This guy should have James May on to just talk non-stop about the various widgets on the vehicle.
Owesome car but I dont understand the need for waterboiler in Australia. Maybe Im too young :D
I have finished watching all your episode on this car (i think), enjoyed them all. I wonder if you would mind letting us know the total cost of the all the work done do it.
www.stratos.com.au/page/stratos-3000-LTSS my boss ran one in his old land rover perentie.
How about if you have a copper coil around the exhaust and connect to a small house water heater container, then you’ll have a hot water while driving and even if you stop for 3 days, you still have hot water without power!
Yes last comment makes sense lets build something on a budjet we might all be able to afford as apposed to the trucks you seem to have or had These units are well beyound
the normal chap on the street and not sure where you get your money from but lets just get reall here shall we I would have to sell my house to do what you have done with
some of the cars you have highlighted So you are either very very wealthy "no problem" or you have sold your soul to do what you do hope its the later otherwise no respect !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Andrew how did you mount your flexible solar panel ? I have a calm shell tent and would like to do that same. Hope your doing well mate !
Don't. Unless the car is perked perfectly, they are extremely inefficient when mounted on the roof. I won't be doing that again.
4xoverland
Thank you Andrew !
I’ll take your advice and just use my flexible system instead of a hard mounted unit.
I know you asked if people fell in love with the troop carrier as a result of what you did, I’m one person that did !
You also inspired my channel.
Love this videos mate, hope yourself and family are doing well !
Anyone with experience, how do you think the 200 series compares to the 70 series for overland or off road situations. Is the 70 series far superior in capability or are the two reasonably capable? We only get the URJ200 in the USA and I'm curious how much tougher the 70 series line is compared to a setup like you have.
The 70 series is like a F150. Its a truck. The 200 is like a . . . that's quite difficult. Like a Range Rover but not as complex, very tough, able to carry a load and tackle very challenging off road conditions. But the US spec 200 is, like the Range Rover, which is too complex for overland - but still less complex than a Range Rover. So its depends on which 200 - they are NOT all the same. But a 70 and a 200 are two very different vehicles is every respect imaginable.
Now that I recently did your video shooting and editing course, I fully understand your opening shot.
Fantastic!!
Thanks so much for all your videos!
the trouble with the snow master fridge is that you can't buy it here in australia. I tried but no luck ended up with the 60L national luna
Snomaster no longer in Australia since 2023.
Hi Andrew, i a big fan of your great video's! We usually have the same opinion. But after 33 years of LandRovers, I finally didn't chose for the Toyota Troopy but went for the small Oberaigner Sprinter 4x4. As I mention in the description of my video I thank you for inspiring me: ruclips.net/user/edit?video_referrer=watch&video_id=yipd_RnArNM
I so want a troopy now! :)
Andrew, you didn’t say too much about the lead crystal battery. Was it worth it? Do you think it is still better going lead crystal over AGM etc?
I'm keen to hear about them as well
I am waiting for a definitive answer. Right now, it is, "I think so."
4xoverland thanks Andrew. Since posting my question, I have actually purchased a lead crystal battery with REDARC 1240D from Leeroy at Heist. I am currently on a 4 week trip across central Australia, crossing several deserts. I can let you know my experience with it at the end if you like. So far (day 2), it’s working very well indeed.
If your budget permits, Lithium is the way to go.
Why lithium?
@4xoverland , Did you guys find/fix that annoying squeak next to the drivers head?
Also, I've seen on quite a few drawer systems, that they put a sliding lid on the top, making it a pullout counter as well, perhaps that's a solution to the rear drop down table?
It was a hidden rivet head rubbing on the frame from the original roof, hidden by the roof conversion. Fixed with a spray of industrial lanolin.
Wish I could afford BP51. I really like the ability to dial in rebound and there isn't a remotely affordable shock that has external rebound adjustment. I've been pretty happy with my icon VS 2.0 but nothing beats bypass and adjustable rebound. Ditto Redarc, ditto nice batteries. Money is a helluva thing for the overland traveler.
70 degrees....!!! I would imagine that would start to melt skin......Or are you just talking yank?
Andrew, I thought the original design idea was with the double cab: to travel with family, 3-4people. Why You did not try to keep back seats for the Troophy? Thanks
Thank you Andrew, for many ideas about a strong Overland Vehicle.
Hello Andrew. I’m a big fan of your work. You have been inspiring to me. I’d like to hear from you about spending the night outdoors. Do you have any video about it? Any concerns about bugs, animals, heat, cold,... thanks
I've spent countless nights sleeping under the stars. What would you like to know about it?
Andrew, I’ve never spent a night in the wilderness. Some questions about practicallities during the night: 1) after diner doesn’t food smells atract bugs and animals? 2) how do you deal with food leftovers? About waste water? When and how you discard it? Any concerns about animals during the night. For example in Europe forest I may encounter foxes, wolves, etc
I very very like your show, but when I am in the woos , mountains, desert etc. I do not have shower, fridge , TV, toilet etc. but I have fishing roads, rifle, axe I can't those 3 as a must to have.
I wish I would keep my paint or wrap as pristine as that and only worry about just the trails. Over here in Dubai, a vehicle's paint is constantly being attacked by the inconsiderate idiot; the person that parks so close to your truck and then slams his door into your paint while getting in and out. Parents don't even correct their children when they do it. And the worse part is that they look at you like you're an idiot when you confront them about it - like it should be normal procedure. But woe unto the person does the same to their vehicle. They will threaten with hell fire.
Hi Andrew. If you liked the CSR, might I suggest the Anne Beadell highway from Laverton, WA to Coober Pedy, SA. or vice versa. Not as far but still remote and the desert different but similar. My wife and I enjoyed your films. We say "been there" quiet often. We have travelled the CSR solo twice but from south to north. Seasonal variations play a part. Love the Troopy setup although wouldn't suit our long term needs. Looking forward to more of your adventures.
Epic videos, top notch!!!. I am not in 4x4 much, but I acquired my first 4wd last year, a modest 1999 Toyota Rav4. Coming from Audi , big change. And I love my little Toyota. Reliable and capable for the first SUV ever built, well built!!!.
Normally I don't read subtitles in films because the dialogue doesn't usually add to the drama.I didn't realize the top had gas charged struts.
Hello Andrew............a pure joy to watch your videos and listen to you talk ! Did you fix the wheel track issue on the 78...Trutracker/Multidrive ? Thanks heaps and I hope you continue to enjoy the Aussie life !
Love your videos and series very much, my only minor criticism is you never talk cost, most of us aren't made of money, for instance you talk about how great and easy the SolarPod is......um, so it should be, it costs a whopping $3120 AU alone.
Cool Darien Gap T shirt at 16.49! Where is it from? I love the videos by the way, informative, interesting and delivered with passion. They make me want to pack up the Hilux and head off to the hills of beautiful Wales. I wait until the girlfriend and baby go to bed, pour myself a whiskey and enjoy them!
Hmm... can't see value in the SolarPod (at 17:00) . I think it would be more efficient simply adding extra capacity to the main battery bank (if necessary) then running a 240v inverter off it.
Andrew, if you say “70 degrees” (9:08), I suppose you mean Fahrenheit and not “Celsius”! But then again, 70°F or 21°C is pretty much a cold shower and I don’t think a thermostatic mixer can even be set that low. Thermostatic Mixers most often have a safe setting of 43°C (110°F) that has to be manually bypassed if you want it any hotter. The setting of your boiler (or geyser as called in South Africa) is likely to be 70°C (158°F) which is scaldingly hot, but good for killing all the goggas (like Legionella Pneumophila) in the water.
Jimbob Jones from the research I’ve done so far, the maximum temperature that particular boiler can produce when running off 12V is 70C. Then you would set the temper valve to mix the 70C hot water with cold water to achieve your ideal temperature.
Yip, exactly what I'm saying.
I set the thermostat at 70°C. But the valve at a cooler temp so it mixed cold with hot, which means more people get a warm/hot shower.
I think we have already established that but in the video you do say “...every drop of water coming out of that rose is at exactly seventy degrees. If it’s not at seventy degrees the valve just doesn’t let it through the system..” - which is of course a reference to the thermostatic mixing valve, and not the geyser (boiler) thermostat.
I’d still be interested to know if the thermostatic mixer/blending valve/temperature control valve was (easily)adjustable, has temperature markings on it, and at what temperature you set it - bearing in mind this will change according to the ambient. Does it have a temperature limiting (anti-scalding) device on it (safe for kids)? Perhaps you’d let me know the brand name?
I should add that I’ve been in the water pressure and temperature control industry for years.
Awesome episode Andrew, and thanks for your close up personal views on this trip and the truck. What's your next adventure? I can't imagine you building this awesome vehicle just for the Canning Stock Route....
I like the Solarpod ... but personally I am very happy with my Goal Zero setup. It's pretty much the same. Solar panel on the roof of the car, Goal Zero `Yeti in the back and I can charge everything I want.
Have you compared the two ? Have you had any experience with Goal Zero ?
Glamper!!!! LOL just kidding. In a previous video you said someone accused you of glamping but I don't think that is what this is. This is making the most of what you have available and intelligently applying modern technology. To me, glamping is sacrificing some major aspect of the exploration setup in order to bring unnecessary luxuries from home. I totally agree with your philosophy. For the critical things like suspension and what makes the car go, you want manual operation, simplicity and reliability. This could save you major trouble and potentially your life. But for niceties like a shower and a freezer, you can go high tech because if it breaks it isn't a major situation and you can use a bucket for a shower, or a cooler with ice for a fridge.
Could you flip your back door panel accessories around to the other sides? Then you would have no issue with the drawer and fold down table.
Not possible. The doors are not the same size.
Great video Andrew (as always). Something that intrigues me greatly is your Firestryker fire extinguisher. I have just become aware of their existence, and REALLY want some for my own truck. The dry powder ones that I have will put fires out, but the corrosiveness of the stuff would virtually write your vehicle off anyway.
Were you able to source these in Australia? I’ve searched and can find no one that carries them and would really appreciate a nudge in the right direction. Cheers mate.
This Troopy is spot on perfect..... They should sell this model as "Outback Approved" i would buy this exact kitted out model..
mite change the colour just to make it a little different.. go with a matt gray ;)
A great video as usual Andrew. Now that you have done a project overland vehicle for rich guys....why not try a project overland vehicle for poor guys? Say using something like a Suzuki Jimny as a base vehicle, then see how well you can kit it out on a small budget. Would be a good counter balance to the Troopy project, which, lets face it, probably cost a small fortune.
Hey Andrew. Seats were a big concern for us in our 76 Series for our overland journey and we found a cheap but extremely effective solution. My back hurts easily but with these even the long drives were easy. www.motoweb.co.za/seatsaint.php or Google Seat Saint Gel seat cushions.
Very nice Cruiser you got !!!How many L/100km do you use, now that the build is finished ???
@4xoverland That saw you got there is made by Silky, and the model name is ''Zubat''. Good pick by the way, they are used a lot by arborists.
Aint nobody can afford that shit... really though the troopy is great but I'd love to know the total cost of the rig. And Andrew... remote controls for your fridge? Come on mate!?
It really is the little stuff. The pop down shelf behind the Maxtax is brilliant. The shower along with the pieces of modular flooring? Brilliant as well. Did you get a chance to sort out the rattle behind the shower enclosure box install? I must compliment your choices on this build. I think this has been the culmination of a life's experiences coming together in one build. Nicely done and thank you for documenting it.
Hi Andrew. Love your truck and videos. Was wondering if you fixed that annoying rattle behind the drivers seat up near your head? And what was causing it? Cheers!
Love your troopy just finished watching your Canning Stock Route trip
I have the 76 series land cruiser and love it the seats are uncomfortable but I went with msa seat covers with air lumber support in them what a difference that made. Thanks again Andrew for a great series on your troopy and the canning stock Route.
Hi Andrew, I love your work and practicality of your builds gained by experience. Can I mention a possible solution for your fold down table?
Swap it to the opposing door next to your spice rack. This would allow access to your long drawer as well as full use of the table.
Andrew, I love the informative videos that you make. I think you do a good job of capturing the culture of exploration. As well, I appreciate your common sense approach to vehicle builds.
I'm looking forward to your future videos. Keep up the good work!
Andrew, you can put Cadillac seats in your truck. Or the air ride seats that vans use.
I change the seats in my street vehicles. Seats are cheap, but support your body.
Wish you would talk about your first aid prep and thoughts.
How much would one have to spend for all this to be put together? I'm currently building an overlanding rig out of a dated Hilux and see that one can get going for less than 20k Euros, but I'd be interested in how much one has to spend to get a truck like yours put together.
Never been in a shower with a bloke before .
I'm glad it was you . Ha ha
Brilliant round up of the Troopy.
I does look like it's fit for purpose for sure. Love the Troopy
I don't always remember to check "thumbs up": all of his deserve it. Doing this on a low budget is probably not a good idea.
Great series and storytelling as always Andrew, keep it up.. Having taken most of your courses on Udemy, can you share your latest filmmaking equipment. ??
Great video andrew..love your troopy..since I'm a Patrol fan,i was wondering have you ever had a Patrol??
That shower set up is the bomb. Love it. Definitely doing this. Thanks Andrew as I love a shower at the end of a long day.
Spot on
I would trade my 4runner for the Troop Carrier in a second!!! Wish they were available in the U.S.
The Canning Stock Route 1-8 ...what a GREAT series loved it...
Do the rear doors on the Troopy rattle much when driving over rough roads?
not even a little bit.
Fantastic walk around. Who manufactured your MaxxTrax table?
rossmaynard in for the answer to this question as well
Quickpitch and I designed it. Quickpitch built it.
You should upgrade to some Range Rover seats. Heated and cooled.
I have to say Andrew that after watching this fantastic series of the CSR, this is some of the best content on youtube i have ever watched! Fantastic! I loved every bit of it, especially the raw, critical, unbiased attitude of your trip and everything within it. I loved the camera work, the music, the way you articulate your ideas and thoughts. Truly outstanding mate! Thank you for sharing this wonderful experience! Cheers.
Hi Andrew, when filming with the gopro, what did you use to capture the audio, did you use an external microphone for some shots?
I’d you to review an expedition truck, simple one those in Dakar rally, converted of course
did the narrow rear wheel track give this trip any problem?
none at all.
when you are sick of the small bed, come and have a look at the Cruisinator.
I NEED that Maxtrax/table combo ? Any chance of a brand so I can buy one. Don't think I can wait until the next edition to find out who makes it !! :)
QuickPitch. quickpitch.com.au
4xoverland thanks.. I have a large shopping list from them already !
How about a pair of Recaro Expert M seats from Ideal Seats ? With Manual Lumbar of course :-)
Thanks for the videos, Andrew. Both informative and entertaining....
So Dometic assembles the ARB fridge and they use the same danfoss compressor but the ARB is a unique design, including circuitry. While its 100% accurate to say the ARB is made by Dometic, they aren't comparable products, ARB vs Dometic. That being said, I really like the snowmaster, especially the fridge freezer idea.
That's kind of what I was trying to say. I've had an ARB fridge, and there is nothing wrong with it. Far better than many.
Solar is useful if long periods of non driving, otherwise when driving the Alternator does all the charging.
All Troopys are things of beauty but yours is something else again. The mixing water valve for the shower is such a great idea. We never waste water either but the screams coming from the shower on a cold night as the cold water gets used first can be quite alarming :)
It's the bad part of this design. No more delightful screams.
Andrew, would you make a ride to planet Earth on your Toyota, but without going to hotels?
