Hey Maddie - that burn is so unfortunate but you are doing great! I through hiked in 2017. Personal advice - never apologize for a zero day - or two or three :). I never pulled big miles, as I realized an average of 13/day would get me there, so I kept it between 10-16 (18 max) and had plenty of time. I took around 4 days off when I got to Harpers Ferry to visit family in the DC area, and took close to a week off in New York to visit more family. When I hiked I noticed a lot of people got burnt out - be sure to take rest days - they are 100% necessary and don’t stress about losing your friends - you make new ones and will even likely (randomly) reunite with your old friends in a month or two.
Also - I’ve noticed you’ve been getting a lot of rain! My year was heavy on rain too haha. I got so fed up with it that I made the decision never to hike in it - I spent 3 days straight in my tent one time (wish I was joking) just to avoid it. Eventually I realized this was a very bad strategy to finish the trail… so started night hiking after the rain stopped to make up the miles if needed.
Anyways, you’ve done amazing to make it this far. If you feel the need to adjust your hiking strategy for any reason at all, then I say go for it! I only bring this up because you’ve already brought it up yourself a few times in your videos. Figured I would offer some words of encouragement with you doing you how you see fit.
Anyways - I’m really enjoying your videos so I hope you pull past this difficult week!

Suggestions, it's a money issue doctor wont tell you..coconut oil every two hours slathered on your burn will heal it in a day or so. Pain free too. Get some coconut oil an keep it oily, slather more when it starts to dry. Your welcome!

Ouch - that burn could of turned out much much worse. Make sure whatever you do that you keep those areas as clean as possible. I'd also recommend that you put some Bacitracin on it to prevent infection. Unfortunately, burns open up the skin to a host of potential infections and it's important to stay ahead of the curve on them. You're doing great kid. Hiccups are a part of life and it's what makes us who we are. Get well soon!

    Hi Maddie!
I think I can speak for many of your viewers when I say that we support you and want to see you succeed with your hike to Maine! We are all grateful to you for taking us along, and we appreciate all the extra work you have to do, so that we, your viewers get to experience all the beautiful scenery along the AT.
You have in a way become an adopted family member, and we care about your health and happiness. Please, keep your morale up and take care of yourself! What you are attempting might be the most difficult project in your life, both physically and mentally. You have already hiked approximately 700 miles! You should be proud of yourself for every one of those miles! You are strong and healthy, and you have the will to succeed! Despite any setbacks you have endured, you kept going forward. You really are doing great! Remember to "just keep pickin' em' up, and puttin' em' down!"
Please, take care of yourself, and ENJOY!

My rule is if boiling water on a table always stand, never sit under it. I'm sorry that it happened but you will heal soon. Don't get down on yourself! You are tougher and stronger than you know yet! We are rooting for you Maddie!!! You got this! 🫂

My daughter and I are cheering you on Maddie!! Fatigue is so hard to deal with! Try to increase iron and vitamin B12 if you can to see if that helps as deficiencies can exasperate fatigue. Dried fruits, cashews, raisins, and pumpkin seeds are hiker friendly sources of iron. Dried cereals are light and easy to pack, good sources of B12, and can make a good snack with dried fruit mixed in (depending on the cereal). You can also get supplements instead/too if you don't think you can get enough from foods (2.4 mcg B12 and 18mg iron daily). Thanks for sharing your adventure! You should be so proud of what you have accomplished so far!

Maddie, Maddie, Maddie, I'm so Mad at you!!!! From the first time I saw those little camp stoves, I pictured in my mind what happened to you. You just had to be the one, who experienced this tragedy. Thankfully, because you were wearing shorts, and able to get the boiling water off your legs quicker, you only got first degree burns, If you had, had long leg pants on, 2nd, and 3rd, degree burns would've put you in the hospital, ending all Appalachian Trail plans for this year.
Thankfully you were very lucky, and escaped from this fully preventable accident with some what minor problems. I'm so glad you learned your lesson on the inherent dangers these little camp stoves hold, and will never do this Again. First degree burns are still no fun, and I hope you fully recover soon. I just pray that these burns don't haunt you to long, such a big burn area will cause skin/muscle problems for quite a long time, until everything fully heals, I'm a former burn victim myself. so I know all about burn recovery.
Maddie, my Kentucky Ranger girl, please take charge of YOUR life, and take care of YOUR needs, everything else will fall in place, and work out for you, So keep on Trucking my Kentucky Sweetheart, YOU can DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!

It's better to take a zero when you are needing it that staying with your friends. If they really are friends, they will zero with you. You have tons of time to finish. The summer heat is brutal. Last year I used Gaterade zero drink mix packages for electrolyte replacement 2 or 3 a day in the heat. I alternated one plain water, one with Gaterade all day. It really helped with the tiredness. Swim as often as you can. I understand that the trail has become a grind. It's why only 25 percent finish. I promise that it gets better the farther north you go. The heat will break once you are in Vermont. The White Mountains are spectacular! Never quit on a bad week! You have made it this far, you can finish! Take a few days off and recoup if you need to! I guarantee you will meet your friends again in New Hampshire and Maine. People slow down at the top of the trail because they do not want to finish yet.We are rooting you on! It's all about wanting it bad enough!!! ❤

That being said I enjoy your channel on The AT as I feel your perspective seems the most genuine of all the AT Thru hiking channels I have watched.
