    Just wanted to say thank you for posting your videos on the Vaquero. I had purchased one, went out a few times and mastered digging up beer cans. I then found your videos, saw how to set the V up correctly and use the discrimination knob to know what is probably down below, and I'm digging up more good stuff and a lot less junk! Very informative--Thank You!

    Cannot believe it's been this many years since originally watching your videos lol.
    Have to relearn a few things. Been 2 years since I've been out but now that I'm settled in new house and organized I can get out this spring/summer

    My "V" has found a fair amount of just about everything. From gold to silver, foreign coins, jewelry. It's an excellent detector. I don't usually take a camera out with me only when I'm trying to do an instructional video.
    Thanks
    Mike

    You have a very smooth narrator/radio voice. Nice explanation of the detector. The only experience I have with a no-screen detector is my kids' little BH Jr. I hear so many good things about the Vaq that I wanted to see one in action. I use an AT Pro, and it works well for me. Thanks for the vid!

    Excellent tutorial. I just got my Compadre this evening to go along with my F4 and I was wondering about the max disc. Good to know that even at max, dimes and quarters will still come through. HH!

    I'm sure the 10E will be an excellent coil. In trashy areas here in NJ I've been using the 10 x 12 DD coil on my Outlaw. It has very good separation and greater coverage.

  • @mjcz5853
    @mjcz5853  14 лет назад

    @escapepods - great to hear you're enjoying it. I found thatfor coin hunting if I set my sense at 10 and threshhold at 3 o'clock, my maximum coin depth is maybe 8". If you raise your coil to say 6" and find your digging beyond 3", its probably not going to be a coin. But remember, this does not hold true if your searching for relics.

    I'm planning on getting the 10" Elliptical coil for my Vaquero. I live in NY, so even though the mineralization isn't too bad, I think it will help me cut through the trash and get some of those deeper dime signals and possibly some quarters and such

    Hi Randy - The "V" has an adjustable GB so you should be able set them to neutral. No two detectors are going to be exactly the same as far as where you have set the GB dial.. Aluminum cans read very high in the disc range and this is why learning to size a target is so important.

  • @Independent57

    Great job! I just purchase a Tesoro Vaquero looks like a great backpack detector. Regards John

  • @mjcz5853
    @mjcz5853  14 лет назад

    @adz62 - Out of the box I simply moved the knob to a 12 o'clock position and went from there, adjusting for ground. I only had to turn it counter clock wise a quarter turn. What you can do is check your GB and if its positive which means you have a tone as you lower the coil to the ground, turn counter clock wise a half turn and check again. When you get close move in small increments. Its a great detector, deep, clean and articulate tone. Let me know how you make out. Mike

    Thanks. The Tesoro detectors do have the advantage of being light weight and easy on the shoulders and also they pin point a little more sharply than most other brands and their disc. is second to none. I called Tesoro one time and suggested that they might want to take some of their deeper machines like the Vaquero or Tejon and add a 4 tone id to it like the Golden Umax. I know target id only goes so deep but a 4 tone id might make for a bigger seller on the deeper machines. Just a thought.

    No problem and I appreciate the comments. This a demo, as most of my videos are, on using a "no display" detector. Cherry picking is a great way to hunt but only if you're looking for some silver and most coins. The problem with cherry picking is you miss gold, and nickels. The main reason for my videos is to demonstrate that if you can't afford a "good" detector with a display, you can be extremely successful with a well made, no display detector.

  • @mjcz5853
    @mjcz5853  14 лет назад

    @LurkerCam - I use a Flip camera. They're light weight, have a 2X zoom and easy to manage with one hand. The software is pretty simple too, allowing editing, music, etc. The only down side is getting close-ups. It's really only clear to abount 2.5 to3 feet or so. Be great if they offered a close-up lens.

  • @VintageRandom

    @mjcz5853 Right on. Excellent info.
    FYI - I sold my F4 today. The Compadre is just impressing me so much that I really didn't see the "need" for the F4. Sure, relic hunting and added depth is probably its strong suit but I'm putting the funds towards a Vaquero (I think). Question... with the 5.75 coil on the Vaq, and the frequency being in the mid 14kHz range as opposed to the Compadre at 12kHz, would you say these would perform in a similar fashion?

    The ground balance was interesting as you dialed from 12 o'clock to 9 o'clock to get it balanced but the ground balance knob will turn for ever to the + or - so where do you start balancing from? The GROUND BALANCE knob is on a 3 and ¾-turn potentiometer.
    Very good video Thank you

  • @mjcz5853
    @mjcz5853  13 лет назад

    @ImageRiver - Hey - The max disc works great! Here are a few coin locations on the disc - Zink pennies disc out at about 4 o'clock, nickles just past nickle, copper pennies, dimes and quarters, halfs and dollars come in at full disc. On my "V" I loose about 3/4 , maybe an inch at full disc. Not bad.

  • @mjcz5853
    @mjcz5853  14 лет назад

    @escapepods - Thanks. When I get a new MD I always burry some coins and few pieces of jewelry and see how they read on the MD. Saves a good deal of time in real conditions, as it realates to digging or not. Plan "B" is if your not sure, dig it.

  • @randyanderson501

    Thanks for the answer. One more question.
    What does it mean when the detector makes a couple of short chirping sounds and then I get no further sound from that same spot after going over it again? Its like the detector changed its mind and decided there was actually nothing there worth alerting to.

  • @mjcz5853
    @mjcz5853  13 лет назад

    I can judge depth easily by simply raising the coil off the ground. But, you need to make sure just how deep the detector will go for a given target, at a certain setting. For instance - I set my thresh hold at 3 o'clock and sens on 10. With these settings, I know I can detect a dime to 7" +/-. So if I lift the coil and the beep stops at 4" up off the ground I know the target is only about 3" down. Works every time.

  • @mjcz5853
    @mjcz5853  12 лет назад

    One of the great things about the "V" or pretty much about any Tesoro is their ability to "Size" a target. Detectors that pisck up a target near the edge of the coil makes for difficult sizing and pin pointing. So with that in mind, on a Tesoro, a dime will show a much smaller "Size" than a quarter, and a quarter will be smaller than a silver dollar, etc. The small footprint is telling you the target is small.

    I bought two vequero detectors, on one the ground balance is on the negative side and the other one is on the positive side for the same detecting area. Is it common for there to be that much diference between two detectors?
    Also why I am I getting a signal for aluminum and tin when the decriminating setting is turned all the way to the right?
    thanks

  • @mjcz5853
    @mjcz5853  11 лет назад

    Sure. You can use a quarter, (or nickle) mainly because it's the larget coin. My "V" will hit a larger coin to 8+ inches +/-. When I get a hit, I just raise the coil while swinging it and like you said, when the beep stops, I do the math. 8 minus height above ground = depth. I keep my Thresh hold set to 3 oclock so I can hear a solid beep to max depth. A smaller coin will be within the depth as well.

  • @DIYPV
    @DIYPV 12 лет назад

    Tesoro broken? I noticed the signal area of the coil is very small just the senter part its like hunting with a 3" coil if you don't. Run that part over the target you will not get a sound? I have it dis mode just above 5 cents. Is this normal? My ninelab elite will work with any part of the coil. Maybe you can help me.

    I agree it's a great detector, but I'll disagree with you on one point. AT about 2.2 lbs its one of the lightest on the market that can deliver the goods. I owned an Etrac and that was a hefty beast! Thanks for the comments!

    Ok I have a question. I see you love the Vaquero but I also watched you Golden Umax video with the notch feature to tune out all pull tabs and still find gold rings. So if you can only afford 1 witch would it be?? By the way Im in florida and I dont think the soil is very mineralized. Im leaning towards the Golden Umax cause I dont want to dig tabs but I want Gold rings !!! What do you think???

  • @jefferybernard4800
    @jefferybernard4800 7 лет назад

    53 silver : nice videos but the one about the Golden was the best you have done with the notch imfo wide control and 12 o'clock on the variable 5c disc. I discussed this with Vince and asked him about putting the notch system and the 4 tone in the Mojave and a super low low and high ground switch to save cost of the parts and the room in the unit so there's less to go bad. they're working on something but won't say anything yet. I think the Mojave with the things I mentioned would be in the 300 to 400 range and their best yet with the hot board

    I get that question a lot! The thing is, Tesoro detectors are, with the exception of the Cibola and Vaquero, very unique. There are times where the Golden is what I need and times when the Compadre fit’s the location. I guess that’s why I own several of them. For parks, rec areas, where targets are within 5 inches, the Golden is perfect. If I’m hunting an area where targets get to 8 inches or more, then I’ll grab my Vaquero or Outlaw. Tot Lots, the Compadre. Sorry, there's no easy answer.

  • @mjcz5853
    @mjcz5853  11 лет назад

    I've never used the Cortes so I don't have an opinion. But based on the videos and reviews it sounds like an excellent detector. I've yet to use a Tesoro that was sub par, they all exceeded my expectations.

  • @mjcz5853

    So here are couple things that would cause that. Your be over a target that is on the edge of the disc setting or maybe the sens may be set too high. Also some targets will hit in one direction and then when you move 90 degress, the target seems to dissapear.

      Are usually just raise the coil to get an idea on depth and if I dig down within an inch or two and there’s no target usually give up on it that means it’s something big and probably junk

    I just got a vaquero and I have an issue is that im unable to make it ground balance. I have followed all the manual in several non salty ground and the result is always the same when approach the coil to the ground its goes silent and when I pull it back I hear the threshold hum. and no matter if I set the GB positive or negative always the same result. What it might be?

    • @2010stoof
      @2010stoof 8 лет назад

      if it gets quiet when approaching the ground you are negative and need to turn the knob clockwise to the right.

    Hmmmm, interesting video. My neighbor has the Tesoro Vaquero. We've gone out about 5 times together already. He always seems to take alot of time in setting up his discrimination, ground balance, etc. Mean while I'm already digging up my third and fourth find with my Garrett AT Pro. Not trying to be funny but I find way more coins then he does. Jewelery as well. Just an FYI --

    @thebearjewkiller1976 Hey - I like both and will probably get a Tejon in the Spring. The Vaquero is a better coin detector due to it's lower frequency 14kHz vs 17 kHz., the Tejon is a bit better with relics. The Tejon, from what I've read, may seem to be a bit less stable at times, but, having 2 discriminators can be a plus. If I had to choose just one for now, I would go with the Vaquero. Its a winner in all regards.
    Thanks
    Mike

    It's a great machine, in my opinion, but not that lightweight if you use it for hours...It's powerful, coins at 10-12" are normal. I often pick some very very deep signal and have to give up digging...too deep! Once I did it and was a large alu trash, more than 1 foot down. It loves odd shaped irons when they are at side of the coil! I would like a 9x8 D coil from Tesoro to replace the standard one!

    @ImageRiver To be honest, you really can't comapre te Compadre to a Vaquero. The "C" is in a class by itself. The "C" hits Gold, Silver, basically all jewelry metals as well as nickels, zinc penniesand very small pieces of jewelry really hard. Dimes, copper pennies and quarters are about an inch less in depth. The "V" hits them all about equal and with the 5.75" WS Coil which I own, losses about an inch from the 8x9. Do they perform similar? Yes, also differently, thats why I have both.

  • @horseman528
    @horseman528 11 лет назад

    Don't mean to be a wise guy, but why not just set the disc. above pulltabs and dig everything. That way you'd disc out most of the junk but still pick up the coins and you wouldn't have to worry about rotating the disc. knob every time. If you were after gold rings just dig everything. Better yet, just get a detector with VID like the AT Pro or Omega 8000. Just a thought.

  • @mjcz5853
    @mjcz5853  11 лет назад

    You really need to know your detector. 95% of all tagrets you hit, will be within 6 inches. Second, I know my "V" looses about 1.25 inches at full disc, so, if I hit a target I usually raise my coil to check depth. If I'm getting a hit at 9 inches and thumb my disc and it maxes out just before max on the dial, and I know a quarter and dime both go to full disc, I'll dig it. But you need to keep thresh hold to 3:00.

  • @mjcz5853
    @mjcz5853  13 лет назад

    @Helldpdigr - With all due respect to your friend, if he’s taking any more then 20 - 30 seconds to set his Vaquero, he’s missing something. There isn’t any fussing with Disc either. Again, with all due respect to your friend, you may be doing more of a comparison between users rather then detectors. In the end, despite how plain or fancy a detector, it really comes down to how well it’s used. I've owned the high-end MD's and found them no better, even at at 2 - 3 times the cost and weight.
