Gav Bilton's popularity is through the roof. The ESM show is usually one of the best shows all year round in my opinion. Great balance between weight and reps expected of the athletes and an incredible atmosphere generated by the fans in the arena. The way the sound carries and is trapped by the walls and concrete in there sounds incredible. I'm sure it does a lot to spur the athletes on as well.
Me too. Some athletes said the logs didn't feel balanced, as they were carved out of natural wood. A little different from precision-made steel logs. Dennis Kohlruss especially said he trained with a log that felt completely different and said he would adjust his training in the future. Maybe the logs were stored vertically causing any ambient moisture to build on the side closer to the ground, who knows. Some athletes also had some problems preventing them from performing their best. Adam had a semi-recent tricep tear which has been affecting his pressing for a while, Graham was sick and is dealing with a groin injury, Paul Smith said he wasn't 100% committed to the show mentally, Shane Flowers came in with a late notice, Novikov had some lat problems in training and Konstantine Janashia's pressing just hasn't been the same since his tricep tear. It was also Jean-Stephen's first Giants Live show, and he said he made some rookie mistakes due to not being accustomed to such a fast-paced show (5 events in under 3 hours). I guess some also decided to save their energy, since pressing an unbalanced 180 kg after 4 logs is gonna be 50/50, and the guys who came in later already saw everyone failing it, so they had little reason to commit. -The only guy who can't be explained away is Pa O'Dwyer, who just said he didn't perform like he wanted to. He's not a bad presser, and on any good day he should press 4 out of 5 logs -- -he even did a medley like this in training and posted a video of him going up to 163 kilograms on the last one. 180 after these 4 logs is starting to become a tall order for Pa, though, but to just press 2 like he did is below his ability.- Actually just heard from Pa, and he said he had broken his toe prior to the competition. He said it didn't really bother him, but it prevented him from performing at his best. Only Smaukstelis and Melsted performed pretty much as expected in a medley like this, and both guys were really happy with their performances afterwards.

He had that groin injury that kinda messed him up for a few years. Even his push press nowadays when he does do it, is just more a flick of his ankles than anything.
it's a very different show to be honest, one day show like ESM in an arena with seating tickets being sold vs WSM which is split over multiple days, longer times before events as there is much more setup and outside of the UK where I would argue it's following is still alrgest (although does seem to be gaining more traction in the US now thanks to the likes of Brian and some of the other guys)
@@simenandersen3262 yeah I get what you mean. Feels weird "finding out" on TV 8/9 months or so later but its essentially because its a TV show at the end of the day. that 120 kg log is my personal record. nice to feel I could actually do something with an implement in a competition of this standard!
Nice warm up for the world record holder Žydrūnas Savickas 😁😉

What in the world was all that about

Hicks currently has a chest infection so it's affecting him

Mostly strict pressing these logs will ALWAYS be more impressive that relying mostly on leg power.
Need back and grip and leg power to clean the log ; shoulder, triceps and leg to press. Not really "mostly" legs as would a C&J be

I hope that Olympic style won’t become the norm
It has been allowed in strongman for 40 years, I wouldnt expect it to change now.
