The original was in the 1955 prison movie "Unchained", hence the name. It was a solo a capella peice in the movie. The Righteous Brothers version is the one everyone knows.
Austin Brown of Home Free also has a solo version of this song.

    FYI...
HF replicates the theme of the 1950s movie "Unchained", wherein the song 'unchained melody' is derived. The movie is set within a jail.
The prisoner laments about being in jail, wondering if his wife waits for him.
    Hence, Home Free's video setting.

I love doing this with both of voice play and Home Free. This is my first time hearing voice play. I am partial to Home Free( yep a home fry)
Tim Foust is there base and he has a 5 octave range he has broken subwoofers with his deep voice.
Adam Rupp is their beat boxer and to see how amazing he is he did a drum solo in 2015 he wore a red shirt and blew the audience away.
If you ever get the chance watch it you will be in awe😊

Geoff's timbre and vocal weight is actually slightly stronger than Tim's. Tim and Geoff have nearly identical vocal ranges. Recently, Geoff of VoicePlay recorded an A0 on their cover of "Enemy" putting him slightly deeper than Tim's B0 low note. Not selling Tim short, since he is one of my favorite bass singers; Geoff just has so much more resonance and can sing exactly as high as Tim (up to A5).

I'm not a fan of these "Group A vs. Group B" things. It seems like the people who put them together are usually biased one way or the other, and there's really no reason to pit these guys against each other anyway. VP and HF are both awesome a capella groups, and they're friends with each other. I see no reason their fans can't peacefully co-exist and freely cross the aisle. I watched and Liked the reaction anyway because hey, great music, and you guys keep things positive, which I appreciate and respect.

" Unchained Melody " is a 1955 song with music by Alex North and lyrics by Hy Zaret. North wrote the music as a theme for the little-known prison film Unchained (January 1955), hence the song title. (hence Home Free's prison theme)

In general, I prefer VP over HF and it's not VP's "fault" that it's different this time. Somehow, I just couldn't warm to the featured guest, Mr Pinto. Obviously he has a beautiful voice: clear, smooth, and strong. Maybe it's just in comparison to Bobby Righteous. (Yes, I know that's not his real last name, but I can't remember it at the moment.) Pinto's seemed to have less emotion; was more about the singing and less about the song--at least to my ears. Given what a tough song it is, that's not surprising, but Tim and Austin nailed it.

I feel like the VoicePlay version is a bit bogus because they had a guest singer...and I would rather have heard regular guy Eli on that lead, anyway. They do often fill in with a guest in the high tenor part; they haven't found someone to permanently fill the spot since they lost one guy. Btw, you need to hear (the bass vampire) Geoff Castellucci's solo videos on his own RUclips channel. He sings with multiple clones of himself doing all the harmonies. It's gorgeous. Maybe hear "House of the Rising Sun" or "Sixteen Tons".
