A few months ago I had a mild concussion and the Dr recommended Advil but it wasn't doing enough so I took Tylenol 2 hours after taking the Advil as needed and it helped.
My dad used to prescribe both ibuprofen and acetaminophen together for post-op pain control from oral surgery pretty often. I was also got these for post-op pain in a hospital & was surprised how effective they were for pain.
I don't remember searching for these but I did have a conversion with my mom if I could take Tylenol and Advil together. Very strange that this video was in my recommendations!
I can not tolerate pain meds. They either make me violently sick or blindly painful headaches, usually both together. That said, I had to have major dental work done. When I told them I couldn't do pain meds, they recommended this combo. I didn't hold out much hope it would help. I was very surprised how well it worked. So grateful they recommended it to me.
That's really helpful. I've learned a lot about pain control (as opposed to pain relief) as a result of a broken wrist and a broken ankle 11 years later. I wasn't getting much help or advice from my GP and found a lot of this information about combining the two on the internet, but this video explains why what I found worked for me - worked. Super helpful to have my own research findings confirmed and more information about why. It wasn't the broken bones that caused me to grind my teeth with pain, it was the post-surgery recovery for about 10 days that was the problem. British GPs seem incredibly reluctant to prescribe opiods now which is excruciatingly frustrating post-operatively. I'm still struggling with my ankle sometimes, six months after surgery, but paracetemol works wonders when I've overdone it!
My dentist recommended this combination several years ago after oral surgery. He gave me a schedule to follow and I didn't need any additional pain meds. Advil has come out with ADVIL DUAL ACTION and I am a fan since I suffer from arthritis.
Great video and perfect timing! Last week I started taking the advil/tylenol combo for an incredibly sore achilles (from jogging). Great results in pain reduction after 3 days...stopped taking the combo and continued rest and ice--- ice is my friend when dealing with pain.. Thank you doctors!
Decades ago when I had pneumonia, an emergency care doctor had me alternate Tylenol and then Advil (I believe, Advil), Tylenol and then Advil, for extremely high fever and to get rid of the fluid in my lungs. I may have had an antibiotic, as well, but he told me to stay in bed and do this, or he'd have to put me in the hospital. I begged him not to. I did what he said and survived. 👏👏
We give Tylenol (acetaminophen) with Motrin (Ibuprofen) together routinely in the hospital (prescribed by MD, given by RN)….because yes, Tylenol is processed through the liver and Motrin is processed through the kidneys.
The biggest advantage of taking these two drug together, other than the different MOAs (mode of action), is that you can lower the dosage of each one. 200 mg of Tylenol is less damaging on the kidneys than the usual 400mg and 325 or 650mg of Tylenol is less harsh on the liver than a full gram (i.e. 2 x 500). This combo works really well for me - headaches. Taking 4 grams of Tylenol a day is an excellent recipe for those seeking a kidney transplant. I think the docs completely missed the fact that you can lower the dosage.
I think the bigger point being missed is that your poor organs have to deal with this crap by processing it. Less is more . Use foam rollers, stretch, epsom salts , walk and eat well.
I'm sure it has been mentioned here but my MO has always been to have something/anything in your stomach before oral meds. Long issue with aseptic necrosis in hip joint at an early age and ibu, aspirin and acetominphyn (vitamins etc.) use over long term led to minor ulcers. Something in the stomach before has always served me well since then. My story and I'm sticking to it. YMMY.😁
BTW plenty of water. My doc has me drinking 100 oz per day. It can be a little bit of a struggle sometimes, but no biggie and I believe in it. I always did the old 8, 8 oz cups a day but he said not enough for a big guy like me. I keep a 20 oz bottle with me and drink 5 (refills) from 6A to about 7P. (I'm no environmentalist but there are too many empty bottles out there. I might use the same one for months. Just rinse it out once a day) Just makes sense that water is good for you. After all it is what we are made of for the most part! Thanks again.
I was told that as long as I space them out. So alternate every 4-6 hrs. By alternating, you are keeping to 8-12 hrs between the Tylenol doses, and 8-12 hrs between Advil doses.
Acute Rehab RN here- this combo is not unusual for our multiple trauma/fracture patients (of course those without renal or hepatic impairment). That combo gets ordered as a routine pain management modality, with prn opioids on board. And those patients usually get Lidocaine topical patches administered around the affected site (assuming the fracture is not in a cast, like an ORIF of the hip), and some kind of muscle rub cream (think of bengay) to apply as well. Good info for the average layperson!
Okay, so the main reason you can take acetaminophen and ibuprofen together is because they work on two completely different receptors. The one thing you don't want to do is take two medicine that bind to the same receptors, because then typical dosing goes out of the window. There is a point to be had about liver metabolism, when you're mixing medication. You can check the insert for such issues, but it's better to ask your pharmacist when you are in any sort of doubt. That is not to say that both acetaminophen and ibuprofen aren't potentially dangerous when used for prolonged periods of time. Talk to your GP when you feel you need to rely on either - or both - for more than a week or so.
Thanks for the info! I have always worried it would case liver trouble later in life.... It's my go-to for migraines I take you down at all to ibuprofen more than I should! But it keeps from taken something stronger
Hi Katie. Common concern but you do need to take a lot or have a pre-existing condition for this to be an issue. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did
I think the docs were looking for the right word metabolize.Every person is different and we metabolize meds our own way. So many side effects we can all have but, usually most are mild.
You guys provide a great talk with good information and great humor .. thanks! Do you feel Advil ( ibuprofen ) negatively affects a healing bone after orthopedic surgery? Can in contribute to a non or mal union?
Hi meyer. Thanks so much. There is little evidence that ibuprofen will cause a delayed or non union. The malunion relates to the position of the bone. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
I take the max dose of both plus Gravol when I have migraines. The combo doesn't completely get rid of all the symptoms but at least I can function after taking them. Best taken as soon as I feel the migraine coming on, before it gets really bad.
I just googled this and got two articles back to back with one saying you should never take them together, and the other one saying that you can take them together.
One of the best surgeons in a large city c9nfirmed that it if FINE, to take these two together. Do you think these TWO Dr's would risk saying it is OK...if it's not OK? Caveat... Always check with YOUR OWN DOCTOR!!!
I have had chronic pain when throwing ever since I was little so I use to take ibuprofen before each softball game I play in, as an adult, and sometimes it just wouldn’t work at all. I started taking Tylenol and Advil together before I go and play softball, and for the first time in my life I can play softball and stay pain free.
Interesting, thanks. I have been really thankful that I haven't needed pain pills for a long, long time. It's not possible to prevent all pain but I do make sure I'm more careful to prevent injury that may result in large doctor bills and the need for pain pills, such as certain sports I used to do. Also consciously more careful when driving, too.
I just had the most excruciating dental pain of my whole life. My wisdom tooth had an abcess and I took 2 pain killers together (without codeine) for the first time along with a muscle relaxant and 2 antibiotics. I also just learned I have cysts on a kidney. Apparently the cysts are benign but now I wonder what all the painkillers may have done to the kidney. Yikes!!
Docs you make this information so interesting. I personally like the idea of alternating between acetaminophen and ibuprofen. Just logic. It’s like you mention In other videos it depends on the person and how the body reacts to the different medications and or topicals. Alicia
I wouldn't recommend taking ibuprofen and acetaminophen at the sametime. I made that mistake before and had a serious axe to skull headache for about 7 hours. I also felt very dizzy and loopy like I waa drunk. Maybe it just happened to me idk. I would suggest that you ask your personal doctor before doing so. I've taken both 4 hours apart with no problems. If you are taking a opioid combination with a opioid/ibuprofen or acetaminophen, and you want to either take a Tylenol with your opioid/ibuprofen combination vice versa! You should most definitely talk to your personal doctor 1st.
Thanks to people abuse and sell drugs, I get to suffer. I have arthritis in the base of my spine, hands and fingers. I have 2 torn rotator cuffs, one that was operated on and tore again. I had a TKR on Dec.15/2020. I now have to use a walker. My mobility and lifestyle has suffered significantly. The surgeon, Dr. Atrey decided that my pain medication (hydromorphone) needed to end due to possible addiction issues. Could not complete physio at the required level for best results. I'm basically crippled. Extension is not close to where it would be condidered a good result. The Dr. was more concerned about a longshot hypothetical of addiction then the reality of my 24/7 post op pain. ✌

I'm allergic to aspirin and its derivatives which limits what I'm allowed to take. Also, I have no gall bladder since it was removed having stones impacting it. I do not digest grease or fats or fatty foods without experiencing gall bladder dumping syndrome. That makes my digestive area a mess too say the least. Now for a kicker into this mess, my primary care physician prescribed 55000 IU of Vitamin D3. I developed bloating, across the chest and under the arms, swelling everywhere below the waist, a metallic taste in my throat and a general feeling like I really didn't want to do anything which to my way of thinking isn't good. Now, I've developed hyperthyroidism on the r/h side of my throat. A quick note the left tonsil was removed totally with malignant cancer in it and the frozen and normal biopsies came back with clear margins. I have a sneaking hunch that the medication he has me on in addition to the D3 which he finally came down to a 2000 IU capsule and the Crestor 10mg, Mybetriq 25 mg, Lisinopril 5 mg, and the Omeprazole 40 mg has created the thyroid problem in addition to the Vit D3 being low. Is there any chance that these drugs have created the problems that I seem to have gotten?

I alternate Tylenol with Naproxen. But I alternate them by the hours..spacing them 4 to 6 hours apart. Tylenol for pain, and Naproxen for inflammation. But these two do not even mention the types of pills they are. Some are "TIME RELEASE" with little holes drilled in them so you get a small quantity at a time. These types should never be crushed under any circumstances.
Please remind people NOT to crush and ingest extended release medication OTC or not. My traing as a CMA was that it was an absolute no no to due that as it causes to high a dose to be released at once.
After giving birth to my son and needing an episiotomy to do so, I was sent home with a prescribed regime of extra strength advil and Tylenol together' 3 times daily for 6 weeks.
Sometimes I take both. Mostly I avoid ibuprofen because my body adjusts to it so fast. Within a week it no longer works and I get extra pain as my body readjusts after discontinuing it. I save it for really bad days and then use a minimal dose. I lean on tylenol heavy. Pressure belts don't help in the long run. Osteopath said surgery was not a good option. Saw a specialist who mostly said exercise and stretch... yoga. Old enough that the final pain killer will come along soon enough.
I take them separately. Tylenol I take for headaches. Only if really bad though. I got high pain threshold so headaches typically don’t bother me. Advil I take for any joint discomfort. Like sometimes I get if I been cycling 🚴♀️ to hard. Especially on climbs and uphill 🙊
I was told by my doctor it could cause a ulcer. I took Advil and Hydrocodone which helped a lot more for Arthritis with my knees which is bone on bone now. I just found the two together helped with pain a lot better. Then doctor said do not do that unless I want another problem so I stopped unless I just can’t take the pain when going out.
Hi kathy yes any NSAID can cause an ulcer. So proceed with caution, take with food, do not exceed the maxiumum and discuss with your doctor and or pharmacist. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
Hey thank you for this I’ve been wondering this for quite a while. I have a perirectal massive lipoma that causes extreme pain. It’s kind of rare and unusual but believe me it’s real. I’ve had numerous MRIs to show it’s there and I had a needle biopsy to make sure it wasn’t cancerous. Unfortunately I have to take fairly high doses of pain medicine to control the pain. The most effective medicine hands down for me for this is methadone. It’s long lasting does not make me euphoric and does not have the ups and downs of other pain relievers. I have to parent with oxycodone to together control the pain 100%. I have come off of both of those meds completely without a problem and the pain was unbearable. It’s so bad I could not live work do daily life in that kind of pain. That’s the only reason I’m taking the narcotics. Before the narcotics I tried many other things of course. The first thing I said once I realized how bad it was if I wanted them just to remove it they told me that’s not an option. Unless I wanted a colostomy bag for the rest of my life. I’m only 56. But I have been tempted to take Tylenol and Advil together at times before I had the proper dosing of my pain meds. It seem to help somewhat may be 10 to 15% but when you’re in that kind of pain 10 to 15% is a difference. Oh I didn’t notice that taking them together had much more of an affect than taking either one by themselves. I have been worried though if I do that I will damage my liver or kidneys or something. So thank you for providing the video. I don’t take them both together often but there are still times I need to take them together. Maybe twice a month. Thank you

I don't remember searching for these but I did have a conversion with my mom if I could take Tylenol and Advil together. Very strange that this video was in my recommendations!
Same here. Exactly. This is scary bullshit

Hi Rob. Thanks for explaining. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
Thank you for telling your story Sherri. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
That's really helpful.
Glad it helps
I take both at the same for my left hip. Tylenol for pain and Advil for arthritis. Thanks for great video. 👍
Thanks so much Eliska. Glad you liked it.
My dentist recommended this combination several years ago after oral surgery. He gave me a schedule to follow and I didn't need any additional pain meds. Advil has come out with ADVIL DUAL ACTION and I am a fan since I suffer from arthritis.
Yes dual action for sure Bonnie. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
Very welcome Michael. Glad you are on the mend. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
Decades ago when I had pneumonia, an emergency care doctor had me alternate Tylenol and then Advil (I believe, Advil), Tylenol and then Advil, for extremely high fever and to get rid of the fluid in my lungs. I may have had an antibiotic, as well, but he told me to stay in bed and do this, or he'd have to put me in the hospital. I begged him not to. I did what he said and survived. 👏👏
Wow that is quite a story HolyLand Fan. Glad you are ok. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did
High fever is a good reason to be in the hospital.
Years ago, I had Tylenol with morphine in the emergency room, intense pain followed by nothing at all, totally effective.
It can work for sure Ray. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
Tylenol never did a thing for me, and i have heard others say the same
Hi Darren. Yes there are times when it is not entirely effective unfortunately. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
Have severe sciatica. Tylenol did nothing. Made me tired. Good for sleep,
Works well for arthritis for me.
@@chicagomike I agree Tylenol makes me sleepy. People laugh at me and say there is no way Tylenol can make you sleepy. Thanks for sharing.

We give Tylenol (acetaminophen) with Motrin (Ibuprofen) together routinely in the hospital (prescribed by MD, given by RN)….because yes, Tylenol is processed through the liver and Motrin is processed through the kidneys.
You are correct TubnQT. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
Yes you can, advil dual action just got fda approved for otc pain relief
You guys are so great. Thank you for being you!
Thanks so much for the kind words Mary! Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
YALL do know they made Advil dual right.. it’s ibuprofen and Tylenol in one pill..
Yes C Olson. Just explaining how it works. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
Excellent point Alicia. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
I think the bigger point being missed is that your poor organs have to deal with this crap by processing it. Less is more . Use foam rollers, stretch, epsom salts , walk and eat well.
Taking Tylenol every day also helps with that pesky empathy.
YMMY.😁
Good advice gene. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
@@TalkingWithDocs I did. Keep up the great work Docs.
Thanks again.
i take them together all my life. it works better for me for pain and headaches.
Good information! You guys bounce off each other well. Thanks!
Thanks so much Freedom Forged! We have been working together for a long time. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
Yes, Advil Dual Action has both Acetaminophen (Tylenol) and Ibuprofen (Advil) combined in one caplet. I'm retired after 35 years of making Tylenol.

Thanks Docs cleared things up for me! Good to see you again! Keep well!
You too Darlene! Glad it helped.
I was told that as long as I space them out. So alternate every 4-6 hrs. By alternating, you are keeping to 8-12 hrs between the Tylenol doses, and 8-12 hrs between Advil doses.
Sounds good Tanza! Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did

Tylenol does nothing for me, so I only do ibuprofen.
Hi Sue. Often it works better but does have more risks. Good luck. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
Be careful about taking too much ibuprofen. It can increase your blood pressure.
Use together..work together synergistically… amazing results. Short term use is always best.
Thanks for sharing your expertise Isabel. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.

Yes. We're talking about crushing them, mixing them, then snorting the works.
Oh my Traditional Tools! Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
My Moms dr told me this a few years back and I have been using them together ever since for severe knee arthritis.
Just had dental surgery, taking prescription strength Advil, only thing that helps!
Nice Deejay K. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
Thanks for the info! I have always worried it would case liver trouble later in life.... It's my go-to for migraines I take you down at all to ibuprofen more than I should! But it keeps from taken something stronger

My kidneys function at fifty percent, and I was never told about anti inflammatories, will sure avoid them now!
Thanks so much!
I think the docs were looking for the right word metabolize.Every person is different and we metabolize meds our own way. So many side effects we can all have but, usually most are mild.
I have lumbar sacral arthritis. The combination of ibuprofen and acetaminophen work great for my constant pain
Glad to hear it Dave! Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
You guys provide a great talk with good information and great humor ..
Good idea Natalie. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.

Very nice Brandon. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
We totally agree Joe. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
I just had the most excruciating dental pain of my whole life. Yikes!!
Hi Ana. Hope things get better! Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
Docs you make this information so interesting. I personally like the idea of alternating between acetaminophen and ibuprofen. Just logic. It’s like you mention In other videos it depends on the person and how the body reacts to the different medications and or topicals. Alicia

Ibuprofen 600 ml (Advil)
Acetaminophen 1000 ml. (Tylenol)

@@TalkingWithDocs Recommended by a dental surgeon.
I’ve never got a clear answer on this before so thank you 😀

Also my knees are bone on bone. I have been forced to go on a lower dose of Vicodan. One per day max. I used to have a few a day as needed. Every night I wonder why I am still alive. They definitely work well together for me, just don’t take over a prolonged period.
Max recommended dosage of each for nearly a year before I could finally get in the OR for herniated disc. Ibuprofen 400mg every 4 hours, acetaminophen 1000mg every 8 hours. Barely took the edge off but kidneys and liver survived.

I think the pros and cons of pain medication should be weighed against the cons of crippling pain. Lack of mobility isn't healthy either.
Yeah. Same problem. 3 weeks out and my doc says if l ask for more pain pills he’s sending me to pain management doc. But my surgeon says l need them. Doctors and insurance company and pharmacy all arguing with each other about liability but nobody cares about the pain!
Try weed. If you are struggling with the thought of maybe a illegal drug, or the way people think about them don't. Help yourself.
I got a acute chronic pain, helps me in s many ways.
Helps me stay calm and seated or laying down for long periods.
Helps me sleep. Used to be on, 3 hours. If I needed more sleep I used to take a sleeping tablet.
Food helps you get motives to eat. Sometimes with pain you skip a lot of meals.

Sometimes I take both. Mostly I avoid ibuprofen because my body adjusts to it so fast. Within a week it no longer works and I get extra pain as my body readjusts after discontinuing it. I save it for really bad days and then use a minimal dose. I lean on tylenol heavy. Pressure belts don't help in the long run. Osteopath said surgery was not a good option. Saw a specialist who mostly said exercise and stretch... yoga. Old enough that the final pain killer will come along soon enough.

Thank you
Very welcome Joe. Yes together they are even better. Abscesses can be very painful. Best of luck. Some of them do need to be drained. Thanks for watching and subscribing
