As of now, (5-15-23), this Ames Plaza is being demolished or already has been. Its going to be a new truck stop. That thrift shop in there, Pookie's Little Britches, has opened another location in Hornell NY. Years ago before that plaza was built, it used to be a drive in theater. The plaza was built and I think someone said it may have been a Murphy Mart before Ames. I was at this Ames location once years ago. I remember this location also had two different entry locations, but one was blocked off. They must have remodeled at one time.
Here in Maine, there is a former Circuit City now a Goodwill, and a surplus/salvage store in what was the first Wal-Mart to come to Maine, with all the original red Wal-Mart themes inside. There is also a local department store chain called Reny’s, and their store in Saco, which is at the same shopping plaza as a former Ames store (now a Shaws supermarket) has the old green Ames checkout counters with the A+ Service logos on them. Most of the shopping carts they still use are also green Ames carts.
I agree. It's nice to know the site is actually getting used for something (even if it's just a thrift store) and isn't just sitting abandoned for years like some of these places do (yes, I heard him say it sat abandoned for 12 years, but it didn't STAY that way.) It's clear that there are a few places where the walls and ceiling could use a few coats of paint or some work to patch holes, but at least it doesn't look like anyone needs to worry about mold, or the ceiling collapsing on top of them.
Agreed. And now I am seeing Shopko locations being sold and getting new life. Shopko has only been gone since June of 2019. But I keep seeing reports of the former Shopko locations being turned into other things.
Nice to see you changing up the content you are putting out. It's good the small merchants have somewhere to go to sell their wares, and the Ames store getting a new life. Too bad they had to paint over much of what's on the former Ames walls. Wonder if they sell those Ames carts. Sure they'll make a few dollars if they do. Nice ending to use the Ames holiday commercial. I love places like that but I have to stay out of them because I only have a 700 square foot apartment and not enough room for all the stuff I would get.
Yo Anthony.. my wife is from Corning and when we visit her family we have to shop there at Pookies for clothes. I think during Halloween the other half of the building turns into a haunted house.
I was informed that the Uniontown Mall in PA is losing its last anchor, JCPenneys and Burlington next year after its lease is up. Sprint is another one leaving from there and moving near Walmart. I don't know if it is true, but my sister was reading about it on Facebook. If that is the case, this could really hurt the business.
One of the First WalMart's in my area is now a peddlers mall and still has same Remenats. Wal-Mart had been been there since early 80s before they moved to a supercenter around 2000. Also my city had one of the first woolco stores that was later a zayre and even an Ames before being subdivided to a ollies and roses outlet. My grandma had an old creepy santa claus figure from that store that I have.
1:40 The former Ames at Butler, PA's Clearview Mall (which used to be originally a Hill's) used to have that same exact "A+" banner whatever it's called that used to go all around the store!
Anthony dont quote me but this building style looks an awful lot like this Ames was once a Gold Circle Department Store probably back in the 1970s. They were considered to be more like a Target than say Walmart. Reason is my Parents said that many of the locations here were Gold Circle, turned Hills in late 80s, also turned into Ames in 98 or so but looking at this particular store it could've been Ames right from a Gold Circle due to the old red carts. Or I could totally be wrong and this was originally a Zayres that turned into Ames very possible. A dead giveaway is if this had an auto center at one time it was a Zayres for sure. Zayres were bigger department stores much like a regular Walmart.
It was definitely something before Ames but it also looks like it could have been a Westons. BTW, Zayre was all over the Northeast and midwest. I think Rita is thinking of Zellers
c00pster if i owned a thrift store and kept it so neat and tidy, i wouldn't mind someone video recording and posting it to youtube either!! I can't believe the good job they do
The near where I grew up is now a Big Lots and a Hobby Lobby (still evident that it was an Ames). That was the one I frequented when Ames was going out of business in October of 2002. The Ames near where I live now is a Weis grocery store (no indication that it ever was an Ames. Been completely remodeled).
My old ames is now a Burlington/big lots, big lots took up a small portion maybe a year or 2 later when ames closed and burlington came 15 years later, but either one don't have remnants, esp burlington.
I wonder if the bathrooms or the original aims or if they were remodeled it's so happy to see your former names used as another department store and the spirit lives on
This is an interesting repurposing. Most of the Ames stores in New Hampshire were remodeled so thoroughly you could never tell they were an Ames. I don't think any of the old NH Ames buildings sat empty for long after they went under; real estate is too valuable there. What I wouldn't give for an Ames shopping cart!!
the one in Seabrook NH still sits vacant to this day as far i know nothing has moved into it! The sign even and all the door signage still is on the doors
oh so cool to see. I can remember going there when it was ames. that was back in the 70s and early 80s. I have not lived in that area sense 2000. so it was so cool to see this.
A consignment store is a store where goods are sold, but they belong to someone else not the store, The store only takes a cut of the sale price achieved The rest is returned to the products owner.
This styled building looks alot like the few Hills/ Ames in Cleveland ohio. These originally were Gold Circle Department Stores back in the 1970s my Dad said they were alot like Targets then
The one Salvation Army here has Hill's carts they're reusing with their own Salvation Army badge stuck over the top of the Hill's name. Plus the one junk yard down from me had a handful of them just sitting out in the weather for a while.
I'm from Michigan and thought the same thing but Ames did have a couple stores here around the mid state area in the lower peninsula.I think one was in the Howell area?
I'm going to hope that the owner at least has fixed any plumbing leaks, and is patching the roof gradually, as she can afford it. At least it doesn't look like the whole damn roof is about to collapse, and if there's any mold, it's not in the areas that Anthony got on camera. Plus, keep in mind that it would have had to go through an inspection before it could be opened to the public. Evidently it passed.

Is this place still in operation? I passed by here on the expressway about a week ago and didn't get a super good look.

In the video, the lady said they used to in the past have the Haunted House but not anymore.

I never been to a ames before
Love that camo selection at 4:44!
Dude, this is awesome! I love your videos!

Store still looks like it's in rough shape but also amazing it's still standing and functional if it was abandoned for 12 years.
Omg this thrift store is a dream
4 hours from me. Legit considering a road trip.
This is a cool place to shop. I live in the area and shop there from time to time
I think the Ames in my old home town of Futon NY got converted into a Tractor Supply Co.

I grew up just north of NYC in the 70s and I don't ever recall seeing an Ames even though it sounds like they were all over the northeast.
What was the Yellow cart at 6:23?
I believe that's an MJDesigns cart. They pulled out of the northeast in the late 1990s.
Wow very awesome to see things that remind me of Ames!

they need to clean the air vents, they to change the lights
I liked Ames, it was a good store.
Great Video! spotted at 4:42 army pt and old army/ military uniforms??
Is Ames a northering store? First time I heard of the store.
Ames went as far west as Chicago, as far north as Maine, and in the early 90s they went as far south as Florida
that place is mental. crazy find
One time at 2nd and Charles, I saw a star-wars charachter with an AMES price tag on it.
Right before you look at last ames cart but after the circuit city cart theres a orange Ames labeled trash bin
Theres a Christian Thrift store in Marietta that still used Ames carts.
The one Salvation Army here has Hill's carts they're reusing with their own Salvation Army badge stuck over the top of the Hill's name. Plus the one junk yard down from me had a handful of them just sitting out in the weather for a while.
Broooo this is insane, so many ames carts!!!
This was definitely a Gold Circle. It then was a Hills followed by Ames.
Wallie b would be losing his shit with the carts ;)
Yep 😂
@@magicmaker15
What about a basket stacking bin by his porch?
True!!!
Wallie B probably saw the shopping cart segment and orgasm'd
This was an excellent find! Did you at least try to purchase a cart?
That place is gigantic holy crap
I live near a abandoned Big Wheel department store. 10 years ago it a on going Salvation Army store.
Sounds like you have a cold get well soon.
I went to Mansfield University just south of there.
I like that Africa by Weezer was playing in the background
Place closed Jan 19' cuz owner wouldn't fix roof
Yeah it sounded like you were fighting a cold into you said something about food
Sweet Mother of Jesus, Ames shopping carts! 😂😉❤️
You bring in your stuff and sign a contract and they sell your stuff at a percentage
It's funny Ames was in every state around Michigan but never in Michigan
I'm from Michigan and thought the same thing but Ames did have a couple stores here around the mid state area in the lower peninsula.I think one was in the Howell area?
This Ames is now closed. The thrift store is gone. Supposedly the roof is so bad the owner of the building just closed it up.
John Cook wow
Now the place moved so now it sets abandoned
What happend to the other store ?
Super cool!
A Zayre originally.
Thrifting is a really fun activity because you don’t know what you can find
It's nice to see an Ames repurposed and with some stuff intact and all.
Ames: the ghost of thrift stores
That was a sweet fine cool video
Leaky ceilings and lights are not a good combination especially if it used to be abandoned.
