Today we're going to chink our off grid log cabin outside of Fairbanks Alaska. I'll show you all the tools and products you'll need to get this job done and the process of applying the chink and making it look great.

I always loved to work with my hands. My grandfather was a plumber and built rain gutters and downspouts by hand from galvanized sheet metal and I learned just by watching. Despite getting an MS

A while back you uploaded a video about people making excuses of not being able to do things. You mentioned about a man you saw at the "dump" in Alaska that had no legs, but yet got around and did things. On this note; when you get a chance check out the RUclipsr - " Harmless Farmer " - Andy Detwiler. He is a Farmer that lives in Ohio who lost both arms in a farm accident at the age of three. He does most of the work on his farm using only his feet. Imagine changing the oil and filter in your Pickup, and only using your feet. " Harmless Farmer " does it.

I wish I had seen this video 25 years ago. A neighbour gave me 3 buckets of permachink. I had never heard of it and didn't know how to use it. I made a piping bag out ziploc bags and cut up pool noodles to use as a backer for big gaps and the back of a plastic spoon to smooth it. It works great, my job looks rough but so does the cabin. Very nice work.
    The insulation trick is genius.
I do maintenance on several log and wood exterior homes.
I have used bulk guns for years and never knew about the follower plate. Typically we used the sausage rolls when I did commercial construction.
They work well also but are more expensive for the same amount.
The technique you used can be used on most sealants made from acrylic or latex.
Most will say silicone added on the tube like ALEX caulking from HD
If a sealant says Silicone first like window sealant soapy water and a rounded end butter knife work pretty well.
People who specialize in doing this have custom tools for the job.
Backer rod comes in open and closed cell.
Open cell is supposed to sponge up water intrusion in case of sealant failure until it can dry out.
    Closed cell sheds the water.
I prefer closed cell unless a specific job spec requires open cell.
In my mind it is shedding any moisture that gets to it.
Thank you for all you do. To help others seeking that off grid dream.
Glad to hear from you again.
    Be Happy, Be safe.
PS Is that you playing guitar in the background?
If so how about a 10 minute video of just you picking the guitar?
    That was relaxing.
