  • The AUC15811 Spindle is one of John Deere's most used spindle among its residential lawn tractors decks. It jas sealed bearings so should you even bother greasing these spindles??
    In my opinion YES you should grease these spindles.. This video explains why

    Great no nonsense video. in over 35 years, and I've never replaced a mower deck spindle. I have always preformed PMCS on my mower, always greased the spindles. Use a hand pump grease gun pump, and add in grease until you feel resistance, then stop, no need to over grease.

    I heard the same story that i dont have to grease the spindels....I grease them regardless....good thing that I do.:) Thanks for this informative video!

    I appreciate the in-depth look at this and the detail about how it's put together. I've been working on my parents' LA 145 that sounds like a crop duster when you engage the blades. Pretty sure worn bearings or rusty spindles are the culprit now that I've inspected, adjusted, or replaced just about everything else that could cause excess noise/vibration. I'm not a mechanic but I enjoy the challenge of getting in over my head on a project, so getting a good look at the guts of this part is super helpful. Thanks!

    Grease 'em. Running bearings "dry" shortens their life (on anything). My D140 has Zerk (grease) fittings on all three spindles (and elsewhere), for the price of grease (both my time and my $$$), it is well worth the cost to try to lengthen the life. Sadly, out of three spindles, only the one on the left is accessible to a grease gun - the fitting on the right spindle faces inward, the fitting on the center spindle faces backward. Put another way, I have to drop the deck, and I shouldn't have to. Bottom line: maintenance is required. Great series of videos!

      The grease fittings from what I know correct me if I’m wrong don’t actually go to anything. They all dead end…..

    Grease is a carrier for oil. The oil will seep out of the grease and slowly travel to other areas , some oil will get past the seal and lube your bearings. Get a paper shop or house towel and put a shot of grease on it from your grease gun. Set this aside and check it the next several days. You will find the oil seeping out of the grease and traveling outwards in the paper towel, same happens inside the spindle housing. 😮

    If you add the grease it may help keep the temperature down on the spindle increasing the life of the spindle.

    If one used good quality sealed bearing and perhaps removed one seal and inspected the grease for quality and quantity, the bearing will last a very long time. The seals on quality bearing are a tight fit.
    The housing cavity is filled with grease to control the heat generated by the speed of the blades and to reduce the possibly of water/ moisture entering the cavity.
    If one side of the bearing has the seal removed centrifugal force will cause the grease in the bearing to fly out.

    Drill and tap unit and remove the inter.covers, then hit it with grease gun every 6 hours of mowing
    I do new decks all the time and it’s going to pay off in labor and high price parts

    When you pump the grease and the spindle the grease will push that outer seal off eventually... But who cares least you're getting fresh grease through your bearings

    I'm getting a John Deere S100 delivered tomorrow from Home Depot. From my understanding a John Deere tech puts these together for Home Depot, not sure if that is true or not. I'm just curious if I should go ahead and add grease to these before I use the mower or assume that the tech already made sure they were greased properly. What do you say?

    • @AnonymousGameWarden
      @AnonymousGameWarden 2 месяца назад +1

      Depends on the HD. They used to have JD techs assemble, but now most use a 3rd party thats just gone thru a john deere training. I wouldnt put too much stock in those third parties. If it were me id just add some grease to have peace of mind. A little more grease never hurt.

    Thank you for this video, very helpful! Would you recommend just pumping grease until you see it oozing out. Or just a few pumps each spindle?

    • @DarrelAnderson-cv7wp
      @DarrelAnderson-cv7wp 8 дней назад

      2 or 3 pumps every 15hrs of mowing will make it live a long time. I have a John Deere Z425 Zero Turn with 565hrs on it and never replaced a spindle bearing yet. My spindles have zerks on the top side of the deck spindle tower which makes it easy to grease. Maintenance is everything with equipment.

    I grease my spindle bearings on my JD E140 every month.I have 186 hrs on them. The other day after greasing I’m hearing a squeal underneath for the first 4-5 mins then it stops and sounds normal? Is this too much grease? Is grease heating up?

    Don’t matter if they are sealed. They heat up and suck grease into the bearings. Stupidest thing you can do is ignore grease fittings! And that spindle that don’t have a grease fitting I’d be drilling and tapping it for a grease fitting before ever returning it to my customers. You save them money by spending an extra 10 minutes fixing an engineering oversight they will see your commitment and you’ll have a return customer for life. I worked in a fabrication manufacturing shop for twenty five years those sealed bearings with no grease zerk is a joke. It’s a ploy to get you to break equipment in 1/3 of time of a normal bearings life cycle!

    You are going to go through 2 or 3 tubes of grease trying to get lube to both bearings. The grease will flow to the bearing with the least tight seal. One end will be a mess with excess grease. Just replace the bearings, cheaper than 3 tubes of grease.

    • @Mechanical_Mind
      @Mechanical_Mind  Год назад

      No need to push the grease out of the spindle just fill up the empty cavity and maybe add a bit of pressure to the bearings with grease vs nothing. Plus Id never go though the trouble of rebuilding this spindle vs just replacing it entirely

    • @GTObearclaw1
      @GTObearclaw1 3 месяца назад +1

      So how many tube of grease did you think it took exactly? And by your logic it’s smarter to run it to failure and replace bearings because they are cheeper than grease? Absolutely magnificent advice. Let me just throw away everything Iv learned about the most basic information and thank god I won’t waste 3$ on a tube of grease that use to completely grease three of four machines. Thank you so much.

    I have a John Deere z665 and I thought the clutch went out so I brought a new one but having same issues the clutch wants to spend but blades not in gauging and make like a binding sound. What are your thoughts the closest John Deere dealer wants $1200

    • @Mechanical_Mind
      @Mechanical_Mind  Год назад

      Sounds like you have a spindle or a deck idler that has seized up. To check each spindle and idler pulley you need to spin them with the belt no touching them. Also check the belt tensioner pulley. What does the dealer want $1200 for? Did they inspect it?
