What a beautiful house. The gardens look lovely. - imagine the pressure of having your back garden on show the whole time! One day there will be a blue plaque on your house Richard “The Vobes lived here” 😁

Glorious. Jane Bakewell was Pinter's wife at the time he was in Worthing. The beautiful gardens are open once a year under the National Gardens Scheme. The terrace wss built piecemeal from about 1780.

Vivien Merchant was his wife. JOAN Bakewell was his mistress.

Another excellent video. It’s amazing what is on our own doorstep. This lockdown has its benefits in that it makes us look at what we already have nearby.
    Well done Richard.

On Wikipedia there are many famous people who have lived in Worthing. In Ditchling in east Sussex I see that Dame Vera Lynn lives there. She has just turned 103. It would be wonderful if you could eventually meet her over a cup of tea!

I am truly surprised at how watchable and engaging your videos are, Richard. I hardly know Worthing (or at least didn't!) and am really enjoying these. It must be your very relaxed and easy style. One feels as if one is actually upon the walk with you. Those of around my age and older shall remember B.B.C.'s "Wednesday Play" - a series which run through the 1960's. Harold Pinter's work often featured. As for the detached gardens, I cannot help but feel that one would be somewhat self-conscious working in theses despite the peer-pressure to keep them very tidy!

I love the house which Harold Pinter owned. I have found online a estate agent listing for this property. The rooms and gardens look fantastic! It was sold for £800,000! 🤭

At the time Pinter lived there, I worked on the Worthing Gazette, and one time several of us were invited to his house, which was a very impressive place. I remembered that visit, but would have not been able to pinpoint the house - now it's easy to find with the plaque, of course, but I live in New Zealand so am unlikely to see it again. I'm enjoying all your videos of Worthing, where I lived firstly in Steyne Gardens and then in Bedford Row, and your trips to Lancing, where I was born in 1940 (during an air raid, I'm told), and Steyning, where I went to the Grammar School. I was surprised when you walked down Church Street in Steyning and didn't mention the school buildings, including Brotherhood Hall where the school started in 1614. Those buildings are now being sold, apparently, as they are no longer considered fit for purpose. I'm wallowing in nostalgia at other videos too, like the Bramber Castle one - I used to pass that twice a day on the "Steyning Flyer" on my way to and from school. Your Shoreham Airport visit brought memories of when I was a member of the Air Training Corps and our headquarters was in a strange dome-shaped building on the airport. My aunt and uncle lived on a piece of land just across the railway line from the airport. Many other videos have lots of memories for me, such as Arundel, where I worked in an old building in the High Street looking out to the castle walls, and lots more. Please keep up the great work!

He recently did do a walk covering all the churches in his local neighborhood. ruclips.net/video/348WmfhcDjE/видео.html. However, I'm not sure if he has ever been inside Christ Church or not (perhaps when churches reopen after the pandemic).

Interesting to know where Harold Pinter lived in Worthing. I have walked near there many times and didn't know. I realised he had connections to Worthing, which were suggested in the opening moments of the film of his play, "The Birthday Party". Which shows a drive down South Street toward the pier, behind the titles and credits. I suspect the external shots during the film were also done around Worthing.

I'm really enjoying your Worthing videos and have learnt so much about the town and its inhabitants from you. Fascinating to know that Pinter spent two years in the town and to see his house. I wonder what is behind those houses if the gardens are at the front? Maybe they were set out a bit like London squares where the gardens are in the middle. Would love to know more!

HI Richard what a posh part of Worthing, really very nice. Thankyou for showing us. I think I must explore some time. Does it have good train connections to the West Country?
I was in Havant Youth Theatre all set up for a go at Lady Bracknell. The theatre was in a very old courtroom which was rather interesting & a tad creepy, with very dim lights. It felt a bit like going back in time to step inside. However the group folded due to a rent rise. So I never got to play Lady Bracknell, which probably would have been fun. We enjoyed ourselves while we were there though.

Brilliant as always Richard! Thank you. I used to do the alarm system maintenance at 1 Ambrose place and remember in the basement there used to be an entrance to one of the many smugglers tunnels underneath Worthing. It was bricked up many, many years ago but always intrigued me as to what was behind it. Have you much knowledge of any of the old smugglers tunnel routes around Worthing?

    • @RichardVobes

Great stuff, Richard. It’s often interesting to find out who famous has lived in the town you live in - I think Reigate’s most famous resident was probably Margot Fonteyn, the ballet dancer.
