I have had a really bad experience with a barber once where I went to tighten my beard up. When the dust had settled my beard was significantly shorter while being even more scraggly than when I went in. I have a somewhat curly beard and he had cut the way you just described not to do it, with the hair pulled out using a comb. I don't think the normal barbers in my area has much experience with beards save for shaving and I am a pretty cheap guys so a higher end place is well out of the equation. I have not had the barber trim my beard yet, but I plan to at my next visit, to get a professional foundation trim to work from. Thankfully, my local old-time barber only charges

I will be taking mine up just a little bit in the exact same way you have just demonstrated, using the BB scissors. Historically, I have used clippers, but I'm going to follow your instruction and use your technique with the scissors. Wish me luck. Also, I know that you don't like to hedge trim your beard with clippers, and I've stopped doing that myself. But I'm wondering why you will not trim your beard in the exact same way you just did, but using clippers instead? Do you just feel more comfortable with the scissors? Because I felt Jake's trim of your beard with the clippers came out great.

Also to answer Greg's question at the end of vid. I trim my beard myself, since I learnt to cut my own hair pretty early, I just replicated some of the skills later on onto the beard. But to be fair it took a whole lot of time to realize what actually looks good, what looks bad and stuff like that, so maybe for a year and a half I was partially looking like an idiot, before I found what should it look like. Anyone can do it using the trial error method. After all I pretty much agree with what Greg said about his trimming methods. The cut looks really nice :)

Last week i cut my beard from a 36mm to 15 mm. I left the gotie longer at 18-22 mm. I found out this gives me a sharper look. I also sharpen the lines on my cheeks to corpetate. I like it better then natural. And i boxed of the jaw, gives a more sexy look. Still looking forward for an exuse to go to mahesh for a beard trim. But i dont think i am in england any time soon

I was skeptical about how the beard would turn out using scissors only, but it came out really good. I might give this a try soon. I usually only lineup my beard and shave my neck using a razor. I have this fantasy that one day there will be beard shops where one could walk-in and get a trim, shampoo, blow dry etc no appointment necessary. I recently trimmed my beard all the way down for summer and cut the handlebar because it has become more trendy than a statement now and I don't like walking down the street and seeing every other guy with a beard and mustache with a handlebar or curls and feeling like I'm just another guy with the same facial hair.
My beard is so wavy. I only cut "crumbs", as I'm scared to do big cuts for fear of messing it up. But I need to try so I'll save 25 bucks every 6 weeks or so to do it. My barber isn't great at it either.
