Food Lovers’ editor, Kripal Amanna drops in for a full breakfast and tastes 11 must-try dishes from this timeless eatery’s repertoire. He begins with a kitchen tour with VIkram Maiya, Managing Partner, MTR before sitting down to a sumptuous meal that includes amongst others, a dessert creation that’s the restaurant founder’s ode to French pastry. Enjoy!
RICE IDLI
The idlis are soft and a hot, buttery treat when had with the ghee. The coriander in the idli adds to its flavour. The idli dissolves in the mouth when immersed in the nourishingly thick sambar.
rs. 33 (usd 0.5)
8.5
MEDU VADA
The vada exhibits a textbook crunch as it yields to the bite! Delicious with the sambar and comes alive with the spicy kick of the chutney.
Rs. 44 (usd 0.6)
8
RAVA IDLI
Made of roasted semolina, yoghurt and speckled with fresh coriander, toasted cashews, and lentils, the rava idli makes for a hearty breakfast. The creamy potato sagu is a flavourful accompaniment to the rava idli.
Rs. 60 (usd 0.8)
10
KHARA BATH
Fortified with carrots, slivers of green chilli and crested with a tomato slice, the khara bath is soft and crumbly, yet holds itself together. The pudina chutney helps tone down the tart notes of the lime and tomato.
Rs. 62 (usd 0.9)
8
KESARI BATH
This breakfast treat glistens with the lushness of ghee. Embellished with toasted raisins and nuts, the kesari bath here is rich in its texture owing to the shavige (rice vermicelli) and semolina mix.
Rs. 57 (usd 0.8)
9
MASALA DOSA
The dosa here is iconic and never disappoints. Made with a blend of three rice varieties, including two red rice varieties that lend a toasty colour tone, the dose is crisp outside and soft within. The palya is seasoned just right. Rs. 90 (usd 1.3)
10
PUDI DOSA
It’s soft, fluffy and big on flavours. You can taste the grainy crunch of lentils, the sharp, spicy notes of the chilli and the undertones of asafoetida. Tame its aggression with the palya and coconut chutney.
Rs. 95 (usd 1.3)
8
DAMROOT
Made of shredded pumpkin, semolina, raisins, nuts and tonnes of ghee, this MTR sweet is scented with cardamom.
Rs. 47 (usd 0.6)

You can ‘almost’ drink this lush, buttery, silken almond halwa enriched with ghee and flecks of saffron.
Rs. 60 (usd 0.8)

I am a Rajasthani born in Bangalore tried all types of breakfast from North India but .......
Nothing in the world comes close to a classic South Indian breakfast .
Soul salvation happens when that sambar dipped rice idli hits the tongue ..
Haha perfect
👌👌👌
Just observed that every single time, he uses the word "dose" And not "dosa" (Which is commonly used in English) and "rave idli" Instead of "rava idli" And "vade" Instead of "vada". Happy to notice you taking care of these little things and making it a point to converse in kannada.
Mr Kamath what part of Maharashtra are you from 😁😁😁
He knows Kannada, hence...
Just loved it, 'Vade, Rave and dose' it is...
A conscious to pronounce it right.... appreciate it sir
I used to take this kind of food, only as a last choice.

Ashwin Murali very well said
@Mithilesh Rathod agreed
I feel, Namma Bengaluru is the breakfast hub in India.
I never find a city which has so much versatility in Breakfast.
Thanks for exploring it 😊
@Kranti Raj obviously & chutneys play a major role in Andhra breakfast cuisine which you don't find in other states.
Udupi food is the breakfast capital of India.. North, east, West our South
@krantiraj . Andhra food is probably available on Andhra and parts of South. Udupi food spreads across the country even in UP, Jharkhand and eastern part of India. Which is tastier is every individuals preference. cheers man
I am from Andhra but bengaluru restaurants are more in veg.... And cleanliness will be there which is lacking in Andhra.... otherwise Andhra poori is in another world
Visit Chennai and you will observe soo many variations in breakfast as well as lunch with varieties of authentic tamilnadu items like poriyal, kuttu, vatha kolambu, thovayil, rasam and paruppu. During breakfast you will find vadacurry with dosa and poori, idiyappam with coconut milk, aapam with kurma, puttu which was originally originated from tamilnadu, bonda, vadai, ven pongal with kadala chutney, sweet pongal, upma with kesari and varieties of halwa and more. We Indians are blessed to have soo many food varieties across our country especially i love South Indian breakfast, lunch and dinner with the kothu parota, salna
My dear friends...the way MTR masala dosas are folded in an triangular shape is to avoid sogginess to keep dosas crisp as this shape will eliminate steam outside and 95% of dosa will remain crisp for a longer time. ~~~Pilot Cum Chef~~~ ;););)
Caution : don't watch it while you are hungry.
Hahahaha you are right p

As always great video and great place..
The way you eat food is another superb one. Superb 👌👌👍
I had the opportunity of visiting this iconic establishment a couple of times, way back in 1985 or so. I still remember the quality and unique taste of the breakfast I had even after all these years. MTR’s reputation is fully justified. When you happen to visit our Hyderabad city next time, I want you to visit Taj Mahal Hotel, Abids, truly a pride of Hyderabad, similar to the MTR of Namma Bengaluru. Taj Mahal Hotel over 70 years old and the dishes they serve have still the same taste and consistency which I had experienced when I ate there first in 1971. And when you visit, don’t miss on their masala dosa (it’s dosa in Hyderabad and not dose), rava dosa, poori and particularly the korma that goes with it and veg. Cutlet.
Happy eating.
Awesome and refreshing video.
Sir u way of explaining is impeccable .
Dear kripal ji, there are some hotels that you must visit and explore. 1. Kakinada subbaya gari hotel - kakinada
2. Ganapati coffee vilas( famous for pottikkalu) located in ambajipet
