Gyllenhaal manages to make Bloom, despicable, narcissistic and show absolute zero empathy, but also unintentionally hilarious at times.

Im still kinda confused on what the snakes were for? Then again I have not seen the film in years. I look for it on cable / Netflix from time to time.
      Semi spoiler warning ⚠️
On a side note: I recently saw Jake’s new film Ambulance 🚑 and it was a long drawn out “action movie” about a stolen ambulance that miraculously drives /handles like a nascar at Talladega. Top it off a critical patient is of course fighting for his life in the back of the ambulance. One dedicated talented paramedic gives her all to keep him alive. So Hollywood for that part… It was not very believable at all and the entertainment wore thin after 40 min of the same thing on repeat. I kept thinking is it over yet…
My biggest WTF moment in the film was :
Painting the ambulance a bright ass neon green in the middle of the chase. Spray gun the ambulance in a car wash stall in order to disguise it.. Lol. What, how? Impossible to pull off with about 10-15 cop cars behind you. The plan was to paint it sky blue, but Jake’s bumbling idiot employee (I forgot what his actual business was, cuz you probably will too if u see it😂) Just like a Bugs Bunny cartoon or something, I swear. The cops r still on the ambulance regardless of it’s color. Like Dah Hollywood.

Thanks for doing this. I usually don't lean into movies where the main character is a sadistic disgusting villian,
but Nightcrawler is different. As you say, the problem is with our system, and Nightcrawler shows this every second by highlighting the people and environments in the society governed by this system.
It hits close to home because the people and scenarios are familiar. But while the people are filmed intimately, the scenarios are horrific.
When you have horrific and intimate showcases throughout the entire production, it really makes a powerfup statement that this epidemic is undeniable!
Because of the flaws in the system, everyone in the story is isolated and alone, getting together only for work-related reasons.
This shouldn't always be the case in a 1st world country, ...but it is a lot of the time as shown in the film.
Hard work should lead to a sort of success, sure, but not when every event is horrific and horribly tragic. Then there's something wrong.
It was fascinating to think how it was all about how the skilled, hard workers are so easily manipulating society's more complacent and inefficient.
And how no one can call them out on it, because the ones who should care are that complacent and inefficient majority!
It would be so easy for someone in the story to say, "Lou, I've known you for a while now, and I noticed... you're just not right in the head!"
But like the guilt every character is willing to accept, like the manipulating of lazy society they all profit from, and like the protection the all recieve from authorities for being a part of a productive system, Lou's "working relationship status" exempts him from encountering any form of natural justice.
This all feels very familiar, like a very real problem that we all feel and yet never identify as we'd be treated with more inhumane behavior simply just for standing up to the big system.
The style that's filmed seems to be desperate in its search for some semblence of human decency, which it never finds. I love Nightcrawler.

@@tristan4175 depends on what you mean by "narcissist". If you're talking about NPD, then narcissists are not self-aware / self-reflecting, their narcissistic deeds are reactive, as in: they internally feel inferior to people around them, and react to compensate whenever their ego feels attacked (ego defence). Their selfish actions are very very rarely the result of strategic planning. They have a sense of ethics and morality, but it gets overwhelmed during ego defence. They do feel guilty, but ego defence shifts the guilt and blame onto other people. They lie, deny, rationalize and project a lot as a result.
Lou Bloom however is very self-aware. He realizes he's different, he reflects that it's because he dislikes people. He hurts / gets people hurt not because they hurt his ego, but because he sees them as a means to an end. And he plans his actions strategically, he's pro-active not reactive. He shows no signs of moral struggle, and he does not shift the blame on his victims, does not lie, deny or project or rationalize, like a narcissist would.
A person can ofc have both traits (extreme narcissism and be a High Mach). But in this case, I really don't think that narcissism fits.

Attaining success and lots of (fake) friends aka popular is so easy
    1. Give up all notions of self respect.
    2. Don't have any core values.
    3. Put family/social relations always second.
    4. When something goes wrong always blame the ones underneath you
    5. When your boss wants someone underneath you disciplined, always do it with relish (being innocent or guilty matters little)
    6. Truth or efficiency matters very little, do what you are told no matter how idiotic it is.
Do these things and you will be successful. A spinless, soulless, human cockroach but, a successful one

I watched a movie out of boredom some late night. Ah, Jake Gyllenhaal, I like this dude. *click
Didn't regret. Loved the movie. He was great in it. Convinced me he was an egotistic intelligent psycho for the duration.

I loved this move I think the only thing I would change is the very last crane shot.
they should've cut to black when lou says "I would never ask you to do anything I wouldn't do myself"
that line alone is so scary, and the landscape shot at the end undermines it
    still 9/10 tho

I guess the landscape shot was there to let it really sink in that he got away with it.

Hey, I really love this video and I want to add something that the video made me think of. In a video game called "Red Dead Redemption" they made a satirical version of someone selling a self help book and if the player buys it it roughly tells to steal one mans grain and sell it to another and how the victim and customer get poorer, while the thief gets richer.
    Very perverse...

Calling the company Video News is a fairly deft touch that sets the story a few years earlier. We all know that the modern cellphone can replace his initial start-up costs. Suggesting it’s done on video dates it a bit, in a good way, because I suppose it’s even easier to enter this line of work when your phone is a sophisticated camera.

"Lou views the world as purely transactional" as he turns into an American flag - I unsarcastically love the lack of subtlety here. I love the US, and our biggest threat is exactly this type of cynicism (embodied by the current republican candidate; when they say "You don't pay enough taxes" he says "That's because I'm smart", and 1/3 of the country cheers him on)

I'm inclined to agree with you. I won't say ANY competition, but certainly, in video-games, human-vs-human games are often described as 'toxic', etc.

    • @vrijmens
      @vrijmens 2 года назад +1

@@rabbitcreative And I agree with you, that my statement 'any' is to radical, to harsh. I guess I'm trying to get to the root of the problem, which I see as 'value'. The concept of 'because I can create a microwave oven, I must be "better" than a beaver who cannot; better than an ant, who cannot; better than a rock who cannot'. It is my ego, my thoughts, saying stuff like that. Not important even the reason why anymore, it was my upbringing, it was my school, it was this or that book. Now I know about my ego involving himself in these kind of games, whenever he does that kind of comparing I just give my ego a hug and put him to sleep with the thum in his mouth. I just reboot him with a different OS every time. Maybe hundreds of thousands of times a day. Whatever that means. Since - the passing of - time is an illusion ;)
