Cheap tricks: DIY Static Grass for Tabletop Terrain

- Been a while since I've done a cheap tricks video, and since I'm making a batch of home made static grass right now, I recorded the whole thing - I love the way it looks, and you don't even need an applicator to use it. I mean, that kind of tool would be great to have, but a balloon and a sweater will do the trick mostly :)
If you want something to listen to while making your own static grass, you can catch my history podcasts at • Would you buy a used c... - enjoy!

Static balloon science for the win!
😁 🎈⚡
The balloon was an inspired idea.
It was definitely inspired by another crafter, Rae'chel Does Wonders :) I had cited her video in another video where I used that trick before ;)
Resourceful!
Thank you Chris :) Now to get cracking on the board!
That balloon is genius. Excited to see the end result.
It's surprisingly powerful, pulls loose fibres away real easy.
Excellent video. I'm feeling a bit dumb, since your balloon seems to work better than my machine, and not accidental electrocutions. Though I've not had the problems with dyeing the cord, then cutting, gonna try it your way, just to see
I don't know Cross, with my track record with electronics I don't think I'd even *try* to make that. The angry buzzing light is not my friend.
Great video can't wait to see what you use it on ✌️
Thank you :) Me too! XD TBH making all this static grass was partly procrastination from the main task :)
Fiddly, but effective. =^[.]^=
A bit :) But it keeps my hands busy while watching stuff at least.
Tbh, I tried this logic of making these and i gotta say i got better results by just pinching the cord cutting and glueing that tuft. The natural fibers mush, and never work out as static grass should.
I used this material before, undyed, for dried grass. So far it's holding up ok. What kind of cord did you use? I've tested sisal cord as well, that reacted more like you said.
Jute, and sisal, and i think some other. All natural fibers.
Best thing tough these are wonderful to die- i bleach them, rince really really good. Then i use dies for clothes to mix the tones - greens and you can also do purples, blues red etc. you can have meters of cord for grass. But issue was always the fact it just clumps up. Tried multiple ways of cutting them, from shavers to scissors and scalpels.
I do have even proper static grass dispenser with 2 modes- shake or dump it so it flies up. Never worked on the natural fibers. They get charged but 90% of it ends up in clumps.
I ended up making tufts on a silicon mat by just dropping pva and cutting small pinches and it worked nice.
Ok, paint me stupid cos I didn't even think of using fabric dyes - that's a great idea and should work out even cheaper. Good call on bleaching them too, it's an extra step but taking them down to white makes coloring them much easier.
I'm pretty sure this will work, based on past experience - I don't own or use a static grass applicator though, and I know my friend Cross from @CampaignTerrain had mentioned to me that natural fibres react differently when charged before gluing. I'll report back once I've finished the project I'm working on ;)
Indeed. I tried without- and for darker tones it works. But reds ans purples just go too dark.
For the dies: yeah i was like. Hm… how to color something that needs to stay flexible. How the hell do they colour clothes? It s the same thing. Then after 5 minutes my lightbulb went- colour dies. Freaking clothe dies. I use the ones you can use with just salt and hot water. Where i am they cost about 3.5 euro for a packet. And that packet goes a long way. Have fun :)
Hey :) The previous comment got caught up in the moderation queue for some reason :o Thanks for the tip, I'll keep an eye out for those dyes!
Great tutorial.
Thank you! :)
