    In case you didn't catch it, he's talking to himself when addressing 'u', those are all the things he hates about himself and his insecurities. Like his sister getting pregnant young despite his influence over thousands while he couldn't influence the ones closest to him, really vulnerable song

      And Lucy (Lucifer) is Satan or more accurately Kendrick's dark side talking to him. Portrayed as a beautiful girl trying to seduce him. Shame they couldn't get past the instrumentals to take in what he's saying, but honestly I didn't understand much of god is gangsta the first time i watched it either. Give em some time and they might come around.

      Not really true, people just have a habit of requesting reactions for songs that only really work on first listen in context of the album.
      These walls, Complexion, Blacker the berry and Alright would all be perfectly fine tracks to do a first reaction to.
      Though I do think the Untitled album is being overlooked, you rarely see it requested despite a track like Untitled 01 being one of Kendrick's strongest individual tracks that doesn't need any context.

      Nah, not really. It's like when people say that about David Lynch Movies. You have to have some sort of prior knowledge of Kendrick and the theme of his album and how the lyrics connect back. Once you do, it clicks but to say this is one of the easier tracks, comes from such a place of knowledge, it's almost ignorant.

    • @mackeym10
      @mackeym10 5 лет назад +3

      I really don't know how you can be disappointed when this is very complex to understand when you haven't even listen to the album and don't know what he really talks about. Most of this stuff is extra pieces to that album.

  • @ghost_in_nyc
    @ghost_in_nyc 5 лет назад +84

    First song you hear is a track called “u” which is a song about looking in the mirror and absolutely hating yourself. Being vulnerable and feeling like you have no one. Which is why Kendrick is drunk and even crying in the second verse. It goes hand in hand with the track “i”
    Second track is an interlude called “for sale” and it gives you a hint in the beginning where the voice says “they say if you scared go to church, but remember , he knows the Bible too.” Referencing the devil being the fallen angel. Kendrick raps as Lucy (Lucifer) And is trying to take advantage of that vulnerability he heard in “u” and if offering to give him everything he wants, if he sells his soul to him. It’s even rapped under a melodic/hypnotizing beat (a wolf in disguise) to lure him
    To Pimp a Butterfly is a masterpiece, but it must be listened to from beginning to end no skips, needs your undivided attention and it really does need multiple listens. it’s very layered but worth the listen.

      @@clairofan01 maybe if you're just sat and listening to the lyrics. You're failing to take into account the true nature of a first listen here, they're wrestling with the instrumental and the visuals too. They didn't have the context of where it was in the album, maybe they weren't prepared for a deep dive live that before they went in, maybe they simply find it a struggle to understand Kendricks accent, I know I used to. Who knows.
      Maybe none of those things affected you on your first listen, and that's okay, that's your experience. But I'd argue that JD and Simon's reaction is a more common occurrence than understanding it on first listen.

    Kendrick during the first half of the video saying "loving you is complicated" and the verse where he becomes drunk he is actually directing all the lyrics to himself. In the lyrics he blames himself for a friend that passed and kendrick was touring at the time and didnt visit him but instead facetimed him which he regrets. He also says that he preaches infront of 100,000 people but could not reach to his little sister who fell pregnant when she was only a young teen at the time. The 2nd half of the video where the beat completely changes is a different song from TPAB, its For Sale? interlude. The song basically is kendrick talking about Lucy (Lucifer) and temptations i believe.

  • @erboch7124
    @erboch7124 5 лет назад +7

    These are two of the most complex songs on To Pimp A Butterfly lmao.
    TL;DR Explanation if you'd like but...
    God Is Gangsta is simply put, about how Kendrick is suffering from survivor's guilt because he was unable to use his influence correctly in the past and stop himself or others from unfortunate situations, and is tempted by Satan (Lucifer/"Luci") in the midst of being in that vulnerable state. It combines tracks 6 and 8 of TPAB, titled "u" and "For Sale? purposely leaving out track 7, which is "Alright", which as you probably know has a video of it's own.
    For starters "God is Gangsta" is a very complex title.
    Firstly, its a reference to how Kendrick's conscience says "What's wrong, nigga? I thought you was keepin it gangsta? I thought this what u wanted? They say 'if you scared, go to church.' But remember, he (Satan/Luci) knows the bible too" in the second "For Sale?" part of the video. This is a continuation of Kendrick's questioning of himself, reminding him that even if he tries to seek God, Satan can still use him by preying on his weaknesses. This is also most likely a reference to the prayer that Kendrick and his friends (all gang affiliated) recited in Good Kid MAAD City after a really rough spot in his life, where his influence yet again fails him.
    The u section of the video starts with a drunken Kendrick screaming and repeating the phrase "Loving u is complicated". There was a popular theory going around that this meant "Luci" as the first letters of each word is l, u, c, and i, and that either this mantra that he recites is almost as if his own self-loathing is used as a incantation to summon Lucifer, or that Kendrick is influenced by Lucifer to say these terrible things about himself. Either way, it's an intense and effective reinforcement of these emotion on the audience.
    The second part of u is more drunk self-loathing and self-blame, which is both a callback to themes from Swimming Pools and Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst; how alcoholism is now not just a common coping mechanism Kendrick sees around him, but one he's adopted, and how he feels like a waste of space to the people around him because he can't even show up anymore in his hometown, which he attributes to the supposed "fame status" he's acquired. So he's basically drowning (through alcohol) in his emotions. It is good to note here that "u" is the representation of Kendrick's vulnerable soul and external locus of control, being consciously affected by everything around it.
    The For Sale section of the video, which is the more confusing part, starts with this dreamlike experimental jazz instrumental, and then has Kendrick singing from the perspective of a character. As Kendrick usually does, his albums have certain themes that are shown in all of them, including women who turn him wrong. In this album it's Luci (Lucifer), in Good Kid MAAD City, it's Sherane, and in DAMN, it's the blind woman. Luci even says "Sherane ain't got none on Luci" in the song, meaning this level of temptation is far greater than that of a normal person. They are all said to be representations of temptation, more specifically from the Devil. The spoken word part of For Sale is a conversation between Kendrick and Lucifer, taking the form of a woman who goes by Luci giving him all these promises that he has been doing throughout the album, firstly through the character "Uncle Sam", a representation of how Satan can manipulate people by taking the form of country (America), with many similar recurring promises, like on Wesley's Theory and Alright, where he repeats the same verse verbatim, but changes the name Uncle Sam to Luci. Instead of the mantra "loving u is complicated" where Kendrick is taking to both himself and God, Luci repeats "I want u" throughout the song, which is basically Satan egging Kendrick on to sell his soul to him with the promise that all his physiological and financial needs and wants will be satiated, as well as his emotional trauma alleviated. This "I want u" repetition could also be an allusion to the famous pro-war "I WANT YOU" posters from American history that star Uncle Sam, thereby giving these characters making the promises to Kendrick one and the same. The dreaminess of the instrumental represents how Lucifer's picturesque imagery and promises lulls Kendrick into having a temporary inability to discern right from wrong, which in real life is how his mind is altered while intoxicated (which is initiated in "u", and reintroduced in the second half of "Alright" on the album track 6, 7, and 8) , which gives way to Luci's temptation.
    Yeah, yall prolly wouldn't have caught all that first go.

    the whole video isn't just one song btw. it's different songs throughout. The first track is "u" and it's Kendrick talking to himself about everything he hates about himself or feels bad about. The second track is "for free" and it's about Lucy or lucifer and how he "meets" him and how the devil wanted Kendrick to sell his soul. Throughout the song Lucy or lucifer tells Kendrick about how much he can give Kendrick if he sells his soul. Like how on the last line of the verse Lucy asks Kendrick to "sign this contract if that's possible"

    I think the problem you guys have is that you’re reacting to Kendrick’s deep songs, you gotta start with his more accessible stuff first. React to songs off Good Kid Maad City or Damn.
    To Pimp A Butterfly is not the album to start with if you’re trying to get into Kendrick because it’s intricate and takes a lot of deciphering. But eventually you guys will understand and enjoy TPAB as an album the more you guys progress.

    those 2 are definitely difficult songs to digest, out of context especially. 'u' is definitely made to make the listener feel his discomfort within himself, and it's ironic but also hilarious somewhat to see it physically and tangibly portrayed through you guys here. lucy is lucifer and she is unnerving. kendrick seamlessly juxtaposes his inner demons (insecurities) on 'u' with this metaphor for the devil on 'god is gangsta'

    On the last part Kendrick is rapping from the prospective of Lucy(Satan). Lucy is trying to buy Kendrick’s soul. On the full song the progression of the instrumental is key to the track. The song begins sounding playful and lighthearted, but as the song progresses it gets very dark. This represents Lucy revealing himself.

    The transparency here offers a refreshing and insightful perspective. As a Hip-Hop artist I was initially intrigued by the inherent juxtaposition of Metalheads discussing Kendrick Lamar. To THIS song(s) no less. While I was a little underwhelmed by the disconnect in you guys’ reception of the material (but probably more related to the dissonance of my own appreciation for Kendrick 😂) I became more interested in where it would all land. The succinct honesty in concluding “I think that’s him at his experimental best, but it’s just too out there for me.” highlighted a few things for me:
    1. I’m encouraged. This reaction is not ONLY authentic but watching the progression from “We can’t put this out” to “No, that IS the reaction.” also struck me as profoundly sincere. I respect you guys following through to understand and, at the very least, articulate that disconnect and share your thoughts honestly. This is a preference thing to me, which takes me to 2.
    2. I’m enlightened. I grew up hearing that says “Everything ain’t for Everybody”. It informed my outlook that taste is self-contained and differences in opinions are naturally occurring opportunities for us to identify, or further distinguish, the uniqueness of our own palette.. As a product of Black American Culture my reverence for the scope of what Hip-Hop encapsulates is, as we say, “deeper than rap.” However, given its sociopolitical conception and many of the themes, language, and forms associated with its music, I’m understanding of the widespread disconnect historically denoting Hip-Hop’s value as more of a lesser “form of art” than a reputable art form. Hearing Simon say “I respect it, but I don’t get it.” resonated with a closely held belief I have about that exact disconnect, which is, if people gave it a chance, they’d respect it - even if they don’t like it.
    3. I’m informed. This has shown me how music helps acquiesce our understanding to the intricacies of nuance in a world only understanding itself in absolutes. I love that you guys could sit in front of it and go “Yea, this is for a specific demo that’s not me, and that’s cool.” Embracing the disagreement to divulge its value isn’t the same as conceding and accepting an opposing view. When you engage something you know you don’t understand the distinctions drawn between the knowledge you don’t possess and ignorance you do become more pronounced. We develop awareness that enables us to see necessary distinctions between ourselves and the world. This is critical in the formation and shared recognition of many important social boundaries. To understand and be in agreement about where we are may not be crucial in bringing opposing worldviews together, but it’s definitely a requisite for Peace. Without that communication at its basis, any reasonably placed boundary can be mistaken for a barrier and previewed as a threat.
    Great work guys.
    🙏🏽🖤
