Glen Powell & Sydney Sweeney's "ANYONE BUT YOU" and the Modern Literary Adaptation (Video Essay)

- Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney are starring in the upcoming rom com "Anyone But You" which is said to be a modern literary adaptation of William Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing" (directed and co-written by Will Gluck). The film also stars Alexandra Shipp, Michelle Hurd, Bryan Brown, Darren Barnet, and ROM COM ICON DERMOT MULRONEY.
In this video I dive into the golden era of modern literary adaptations on film, and share my hopes for "Anyone But You".
I know Michael and Mandella were quoting Macbeth but IN MY HEART, it still feels referential to have a couple flirting using Shakespeare 10 Things I Hate About You. 😂

I saw a production of Taming of the Shrew a few years ago, where the way they played the ending they made it clear that the “taming” aka breaking of Kate was a tragedy.
Whaaaaaaaaat, that sounds fabulous, I would like to buy the director a beverage of their preference to show my gratitude. 😂🍹✨
@@LadyJenevia 😉 it wouldn’t be outright impossible for me to get you a name, but it was a very small production in Vancouver Canada and maybe 6 years ago.
Loved the whole video, by the way! Keep doing this LJ, your reviews remind me of everything that matters about this art ❤️🔥
How do you always take me out with the dang soundbites 🤣 I was NOT READY for that My Big Fat Greek Wedding snippet!
On the real, I so miss the days of Rom-Com for the sake of Rom-Com, if you catch my drift. The greatest thing about literature and art is its constant evolving application to life today. That we can read works of the past, see its intrinsic value, and create amazing modern retellings as a result of it.
😂 I try to just follow my brain to whatever references pop up and I've seen that one soooooooo many times. 🤩🗣
THE THIRD MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING IS COMING OUT SOON! The movie is set IN GREECE! 🥰🇬🇷
Hulu’s Rosaline is one of the best “modern” Shakespeare adaptations. I was smiling like an idiot the whole time. It is so funny and self-aware
and see, as a Romeo and Juliet stan I didn’t like that movie because it read like someone that was wilfully misunderstanding the original play complaining about having to read it in school. 😂
I'm still bitter about Still Star-crossed getting cancelled after ending with a cliffhanger.
Also Dermot Mulroney is a Cellist! like for real
OH I KNOW, I don't remember exactly when I learned that but I think my adolescent brain exploded when I did because the cello is my favourite instrument. 😂
As soon as I saw 'Bea and Ben', I was on board. As for my favorite rom com, I know it's horrible, but I still have a soft spot for On the Line. I still quote the speech that they use to keep their printer working at least once a week. Aside from that, I really love the more recent productions of Much Ado About Nothing (the Danielle Brooks lead show as well as the David Tennant/Catherine Tate lead show). They updated the time period, but not the language, which I'm a sucker for in an adaptation. Great video as always!!
Which one is that? I tried searching for it on here and an action film came up. 😅
@@LadyJenevia It's from like, 2001, and it had Lance from *NSync as the leading man (with Joey Fatone as one of his friends who tries to help him get the girl). It's kind of terrible and cheesy, but it's still stuck in my brain nearly 22 years later, so it must have done something right! 😂😂
@@Yngvolkayno LANCE BASS??? Oh my gosh, what a throwback. 😀
@@LadyJenevia Oh, it absolutely is! 😂 But honestly, for a movie from 2001, it aged alright (from what I remember), which is more than can be said for a lot of movies from that time!
I would *genuinely* love a video by you about the history of the MPA/rating systems and your opinions on it and how to improve things for modern times!!!
Interesting idea... they tend to pop up as 'characters' in videos from time to time because they're a persistent nuisance. I talked a bit about this when I did my Some Like It Hot / White Chicks videos but more so just touching on the history of how Some Like It Hot is regarded by many as being a death blow to the Hayes Code since it was a massive hit without getting approval from the HC. They also got mentioned in my Women of Zack Snyder's filmography video because there was a fight over the rating of Sucker Punch that was really gross and misogynistic (it had to do with female sexuality and the only way the film could have gotten the more financially beneficial PG-13 rating would be if Zack Snyder had edited an encounter involving the main character to appear non-consensual and he refused to put that in the movie so the movie stayed R).
@@LadyJenevia ooooo thank you! time for a rewatch 👀
I’d also be interested in a ratings/ regulations though history breakdown
(Wholly unrelated, is your profile picture epik high?)
@@dysmissme7343 I don’t know what “Epik high” is? My profile photo is me from when my photographer friend took some pictures of me eight years ago. 😂
@@dysmissme7343 whoops just saw this! ya it's that album art for "sleepless in_______"
This is the earliest I’ve ever been!!!! Just watched your video on the Rebel Moon trailer!!!! 😍😍😍😍
Welcome! I've been excited to publish this video for a good week or so!!! 💥
So this comment is probably gonna be more about Bridgerton than this movie, but I am gonna bet that Antony and Kate were basically their own version of Taming of the Shrew!
They gave me more Pride and Prejudice vibes because of the whole “she overheard him saying something dodgy and now he has a mountain to climb to fix his reputation in her eyes” 😂
@@LadyJeneviaas he should! Anthony should climb two mountains!
Awesome vid! I have just purged some DVDs but the modern literary adaptations are still very much on my shelf! Love the Ben/Bea dynamic in Much Ado so very much looking forward to this!
GREAT that you’re supporting physical media! It’s so important nowadays given how shady the corporations are being about disappearing art from their platforms! 👀📚
Yay a new video‼️Hopefully Anyone But You is successful‼️ I’ll definitely see it in theaters‼️
Ps: I too love Kennth Branagh’s Much Ado About Nothing‼️ The whole cast is excellent‼️

Jenevia- Red from Overly Sarcastic Productions did a **fantastic** review/ analysis of 'The Taming of the Shrew' under her Shakespeare Summarised series: I recommend it to everyone!
Where is 10 things I hate about you???? 😂
There it is.❤
……..did you even watch the video? 😅
I am currently. Comment has been updated 😂
19:27 yeah, actually I i remember watching Prince of Jutland, starring Christian Bale, which was another Hamlet movie and all of them are from the Danish legend of Prince Amleth.
And here I am! So ready.
Jumping back in to say loved this. So great! Thank you.
Thank you so much! 😊🙋🏻♀️
@@LadyJenevia so, I've been thinking further on some of the things you discussed here, and I have some follow up questions I'd love to hear your thoughts on.
1) Have you watched any of the vlog format modern literary adaptations? Lizzie Bennet's Diaries is the obvious example, but there are some other great ones (some okay ones, some meh ones and some hard pass ones). If so, what are your thoughts on that style of adaptation? Is there anything you thought could have really worked with that format that wasn't done, or anything that was done that really didn't suit the format?
2) I did a quick search and couldn't find anything, have you watched/reviewed/analysed Fire Island?
here after watching the improved trailer with upbeat music and bad idea right? by olivia and honestly they got me i’ll be seated for this one
Shhhhhhhhhh, I haven't watched the trailer yet because I want to do a reaction and didn't have time to film today, I'm devoting tomorrow to doing all of that! 😂
I've refused to watch it because I want to save everything for the camera/internet. 👀🤭
@@LadyJenevia omg i’m ready for that🤭
I'm looking forward to seeing this Movie?!...😏😎😁

I disagree with your comment on Taming of The Shrew. I have never interpreted Petruchio's behavior towards Katherine(Katherina?) as abuse. Before he married her, he had already been told how horrible she treats everyone else, we are even shown how horrible she treats everyone else, family included. I always saw it as, yes he married her or money, but did in the very least end highly fond of Katherine. In there first 3-4 days together he treats her as badly as she has treated everyone else, resulting in her much less hostile nature later chiding her sister and a friend(? neighbor) for behaving selfishly and bratty towards their brand new husbands. I rather like it as I have know a few women, who were friends, who were wild and/or hostile towards either other women or men and once they were called out on it by someone they fell in love with and wanted to build a life with, became kinder and more responsible with their behavior towards others.
When did she ever force someone into marriage against their will in order to get money, and then starve and systematically deprive them of sleep? Forced sleep deprivation is a torture tactic. 😵💫
@@LadyJenevia And tying up her sister or throwing her around isn't torture? I bet her father didn't get much sleep from the stress she caused. him. You also cannot judge the lives of the past by today's standards. Yes, sleep deprivation is torture, but Petruchio didn't sleep either, he timed out his deprivation. He didn't eat either, he sent all the food away. Dowries were an incredibly common thing in the aristocracy of 1500's(as well as a few other centuries after) England, so we really can't judge that.
I absolutely can and will judge antiquated systems of men trading women like property, and using marriage to them as a bargaining tool. I hate the practice no matter when it's happening. 😂
