Fridolin Fickwicht Yeah without the moon the oceans would be still :) well mostly still, I’m guessing the spin of the Earth would create some sort of tide
Ah guys, I remember when you were just a coupla lads messing with high speed cameras in a back garden...look at you now with your studio and guests and stuff! What a progression 😎👍
We live in a universe where the only constant is that things can only interact if they’re next to each other, which makes the whole universe one big wave function
I feel like they need to make longer videos with how much of a budget they have for this series. They bring on these super smart people and give them like not even 5 minutes of screen time.
Yeah, but these videos aren't designed for people that actually want to know things, they're designed for people like this: "Hey, you guys should do a slo-mo video of a Weed Wacker up close" Which is fine, I guess. We all want to see a slow-mo weed whacker, but no, if you want to actually educate yourself, there's VSauce and all sorts of other channels. I don't know why they bother with the 'science-y bits' really. They're so thin as to be pointless as education.
i really like this episode, because there's been a longer chat with the expert, everyone seems more into the topic and more comfortable with each other. it didn't feel so dismissive to the knowledge behind the phenomenon. a+ video, really good.
One of the things I have liked about RUclips factual content so far in comparison with TV is the absence of padding. These alternating episodes have about a minute and a half of recap at the start to skip, skip, skip through. This is getting like TV - I know I'm not alone. Please keep the signal to noise ratio UP, since you don't have to meet a set-time slot, and people largely subscribe, and a ten second summary and an inline link to the previous show will cover those who don't. This format can be better than TV.
Totally agree, i'll even add that dumbing down physics along with poor choice of words from the author and the lack of time he had to explain made this really painfull to watch. If you look at most of the comments, everyone felt his speech was "sketchy" it made him sound like some new age stoner when he actually talks about two very real physics phenomenons, he just had 0 time to explain his words and their meaning... I could pass on the 5th grade jokes if the point is to learn something, it's really wasted potential.
I really enjoyed these 2 episodes Gav, Dan. Great job with the waves. I loved the experiment with the salt. You should do the sound one with flames. It's extremely mesmerizing. One of my absolute favorites.
I dont know what that guy might have smoked but must have been smth really strong. I just point out that a wave is a movement of energy and tides are a movement of water from one place to another.
Wouldn’t friction from the earth’s tides slowing down the earth’s rotation break conservation of energy? Where is the earth’s rotational energy going? Into the water? Cause I don’t think that’s possible.
Ian Cook, not sure what you are getting at because all the energy in your system still seems to be on earth. I decided to look it up. “The Earth's rotation is slowing down from rotational energy transfer to the moon's orbit through tides. The moon is very slowly increasing its orbital radius.” This is what I could find, so earth’s rotational energy is being transferred into the moon through the moon’s gravity having an effect on earth’s tides. Honestly, just a dumbed down quick explanation. I’d have to do more research to fully understand the transfer of energy going on.
Usually, when I watch Slomoguys I'm thinking "neat" or "cool", but that talk about the tides was pretty mind-blowing how our world's rotation has slowed over time.
Oh dear god, unlearn all of that please. The author they interviewed was either some conspiracy crook or the worst explainer in history. Tides are a result of gravity, not "sun and moon vibes" and water on earth slowing down earth is not congruent with the law of conversion of energy
there are times when I get a bit sad that we're seeing a compressed version of the footage with a limited bit rate. I can't imagine how mesmerising the footage might have looked when it was uncompressed
It was never called George as it was considered rude to address the monarch informally. As Elliot's Lab said, it was called the Georgium Sidus along with Neptune and a few other names.
Very cool but I feel like it wasn't explained very well... He says the tides are a result of 'vibrations from the sun and the moon' and 'a result of various signals from the sun and the moon', 'the oceans responding to pulses and beats from the sun and moon' - what does that mean? I was under the impression the tides are purely from the gravity of the moon but this suggests otherwise. What are these signals that affect the tides? Electromagnetic? Gravitational waves maybe??
Ohhh LOL duno if you're remember but I've wrote you about frequency generator thing I'm really Happy that You've tried this.. Agree...I was a bit puzzled by his analogy of the sine wave signal generator demonstration .... as being like "vibrations from the sun and moon."
