Nobody knows what causes it as for now -- the _black blotches._ Heh. It is called Hyperpigmented Melanosis. On a side note, really nice fishing at the tidal basin! The Gar were at the Potomac until not so long ago! I really wanted to go down there for some, but didn't have time. Sigh. Tight lines, Mike!
The condition is commonly known as ‘blotchy bass’ or ‘black spot’ and has been documented occasionally in various Pennsylvania waters since as early as 1980. It’s not precisely known what causes the condition, but the bass that biologists have examined in previous years were generally healthy and in good condition. biologists have added that the condition has not been linked to specific pollution events, nor is there any evidence to suggest that blotchy bass condition is related to the young-of-year smallmouth disease issues in the Susquehanna River. The fish are safe to eat. Like so he can see this!
Mike, can you believe I was your 4th sub!? Lol the centennial tourney was what started it all. Congrats at all your accomplishments Mike. I still enjoy your videos!
The water clarity of the Potomac is surprisingly good most of the time. We fish the Anacostia River (Eastern DC) regularly and its always zero viz. Even found a deer swimming across it once, but it's so dirty couldn't see past the water line.
Great vid as always. I like both of your formats of videos that you have done. No matter what you always come through with a good video. Loved the video man.
That's one of the most gorgeous largemouth bass I've ever seen @4:45. I caught one similar to that that was 16" a week or 2 ago and she had black lips too! I've read that it's just a pigment disorder that's harmless to the bass' health!
I was here for a school field trip and aside from the Arlington Cemetery and anything military-related, I was relatively "bored". Every time we passed the river, I'd think "I wonder what I'd be able to catch them on" or "I wonder if I'd be able to find a local bait shop and buy a cheap rod to sneak out and smack 'em" Well I never did the chance to fish the river but I am glad you posted this so I could see what I missed. Thank you.
My lake also has bass with those same black splotches. I looked it up and found a KVD forum where he said that it was the sign of a very healthy fishery.
I just caught my first soft plastic bass today on a 5inch texas righed senko it was awsome u acually gave me the confidence to try it thanks and the videos are on point...tight lines
Nice video. Moving to D.C in November and was concerned about where I can go fishing. I feel relieved now knowing I can fish at the Potomac river. Fish On!!!
nice video great back drop to fish at. I love that you get right to the fishing. lately all my favorite you tube fishing guys are starting with 5 minutes of time lapses videos of them eating.
Sick video man, I walked right past that place when I went with my 8th grade class trip there and I never thought you could fish there, awesome vid man keep up the great work!!!!
the spot you started at in the very beginning of the video is really good for walleye and crappie, I would love to meat up with you and show you some really good spots on the basin and other spots in DC to catch a lot more good quality bass and snakehead
Hey dude, I just wanted to tell you that I was the kid who met you at DC on my field trip there. We met at the FDR memorial where some of my friends and I met you. I thought that was really cool! Anyway, thanks for this great video, and I hope you come to NJ again someday!
Props to you for fishing that nasty ass river. On some hot summers I've seen some nasty smelly fish die-offs. Dozens of dead fish floating on the water. I've tried catching snakeheads a bit further south in Alexandria and they just sniffed around the bait and never hit it. Nice video.
I saw you fishing in DC, I was walking across the bridge where you caught that big bass and yelled "1rod". Good to see ya man, although we didn't get to talk haha
I was there a couple weeks ago dang I wish you were there when I was there man. You are my idol, you should come down to NC sometime and fish I've caught some big solid 10 and 12 pounders and my personal best is 13.3 please visit NC in the Burlington Greensboro area.
dude I was there a couple weeks ago on a school trip and was think man I would love to fish here and do it was really cool to see you post a video. it would have been funny if I was there while you were
Hey Dude! Coming into DC from Eastern NC Friday morning with 17 yr old son and wife. Looking to knock a fish off our bucket list. The elusive smallmouth bass. Don't have those back home. Let me know if you want to do some DC bank fishing. Enjoying your posts. Richard.

I saw over 30 gar swimming around, often in schools of 4-6, many of them were big, in the 2-3 foot range!
Extreme philly how are you the first comment every time just get off of youtube
@@rameelio5616 then why do you watch his videos
In Kentucky, catfish usually hit live bait. That's almost unheard of catfish hitting crank bait.

JTRobots melanosis. Its caused by cells that regulate pigmentation that act improperly.
Wow that Bass with the Spots was freeking cool!! I've never seen that big and dark spots!! Great Catch.
Urban bass fishing is always fun. Definitely a different sort of challenge.
6:50 Mike has got to be the king of awkward fist bumps and/or high fives lol it's great
Great video.
It's always cool to see you fishing new places with people who follow you.
Mike, can you believe I was your 4th sub!? Lol the centennial tourney was what started it all. Congrats at all your accomplishments Mike. I still enjoy your videos!

The bass with the black spots on it was so beautiful. 😍

Amazes me what kind of stuff you can find in the water in urban areas.
Fishing right in the middle of DC like that is pretty awesome!
Another great vid... weird paint on that bass
He went for the 5 instead of the fist bump😂😂
LOL
Hahah
He should have just cut that part out
That happens all the time with 1Rod. Hahahaha
why cut it out? dudes a boss
"I scared your pigeon" 😂😂😂😂😂
Hahahaha
+Vangsify are you a boy
I read your comment as soon as he said it 😋
I've always loved the POV videos, but I also like the new format so we can get a better view of how you work your rod when you're fishing
i love fishing the Basin. I have fished in a ton of places around the country and this place is top 3
Really liked the mellow music in between fishing spots. Nice one man!
Ran in to that guy a month ago while fishing the potomac. great guy!
Awesome video! and even better to be right in the middle of all the US monuments and history!
Great vid as always. I like both of your formats of videos that you have done. No matter what you always come through with a good video. Loved the video man.

Also, were you using the 2 piece Omen?
hopefully u can fish there some time in the future! It was the one piece, gear used is always listed in the video description :D
+1Rod1ReelFishing oh yeah I forgot about the description. I was too carried away with my story to remember to check that haha!
My lake also has bass with those same black splotches. I looked it up and found a KVD forum where he said that it was the sign of a very healthy fishery.
Dope beat in the background! I'm glad that Jon B's music taste has rubbed off on you.
WOW! I never knew you could fish over there. Definitely next time I come up north going to have to check it out. Those were some nice bass....
There's awesome smallmouth fishing a few miles upstream on the Potomac (above the fall line).
I just caught my first soft plastic bass today on a 5inch texas righed senko it was awsome u acually gave me the confidence to try it thanks and the videos are on point...tight lines

That was a awesome high knuckle y'all did when you scared the pigeon lol
Great video as always! I've never even seen a bass with black spots though that's crazy

thanks for watching bro! i probably would've passed up a spot like this too if Ian hadn't introduced it to me!
You need to make it over to the upper left side, Pacific Northwest will blow your mind!
Loved the edit today, Mike! Keep them coming!
The black blotches are pigment discoloration. It doesn't mean the bass is unhealthy, but means that it is very healthy. Great catch by the way!
I didn't know you could fish those areas! Thanks! I will be in DC in 2 weeks so I will try to hit those spots!
Your videos keep getting better as you go. I love them!
Dang almost at 200,000 subs. Seems like a few months ago you were celebrating a 100,000. Good shit, man.
the spots are melanosis. Imagine a completley melanistic bass ( all black) i would be so pumped if i caught one
I've actually hooked into some decent striper around that area. great video as always!
the spot you started at in the very beginning of the video is really good for walleye and crappie, I would love to meat up with you and show you some really good spots on the basin and other spots in DC to catch a lot more good quality bass and snakehead

Ask Leo why some bass have those black marks, he knows everything!
it melanosis. it is just skin pigmentation. fishandboat.com/newsreleases/2012press/bass-spots.htm heres the link with more information about it.
That rod and reel combo 😍😍
If you want to go after smallies, try the Shenandoah River (Potomac tributary), ideally the South Fork.
That guy looks like he could be Stephen Strasburg's little brother. Love you videos by the way.
Props to you for fishing that nasty ass river. On some hot summers I've seen some nasty smelly fish die-offs. Dozens of dead fish floating on the water. I've tried catching snakeheads a bit further south in Alexandria and they just sniffed around the bait and never hit it. Nice video.
the black sploches on the bass, I fish the river a lot and I see it a lot it shows the fish are healthy and the conditions of the river are healthy
I saw you fishing in DC, I was walking across the bridge where you caught that big bass and yelled "1rod". Good to see ya man, although we didn't get to talk haha
