Back in the ‘60s Paul Horn did an album, Inside the Taj Mahal, where the natural echo inside the building was long enough to play along with the returning sound. However in the subsequent album, inside II, was done primarily in the studio and there is a cut that has Mr. Horn producing a staccato effect on the flute. The delay space appeared to so large that as the sounds went from rain drops to the crack of a fire that seemed grow into something much larger, may be a forest fire. So the extreme size of the final zone that Mr. Erne spoke about has the potential to do something marvellous. Thank you
Yes, videos like this are awesome. I often meticulously research how gear works and hearing the backstory behind it tells so much about its intention and personality. And Tom is particularly great, his reverb max patches are great learning tools for wrapping your head around how reverb can work.
A thoroughly engaging and warm conversation between the two of you. I'd be happy to see more of such content too. To think I used to use Digitech Time Machine Rack Delay that completely opened up my sonic world in the 1980s. Something like the Mimeophon is light years ahead of this. I can't wait to explore this device one day too!
@@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC The entire Scanner 1 CD (Ash International) album was recorded using the Digitech 7.6 Time Machine, Alesis Quadraverb and a Fostex 280. No sampler available with my budget so used the Digitech to trap the sound in and loop and process it!
I love that the "color" control is not just a simple filter. It seems to morph between several effects that include distortion and compression. Really unique and intentional. I also love that Tom dove deep into the schematics and spectra of a variety of classic hardware. That elbow grease comes through in the module's unique sound. Really looking forward to playing around with this module.
there is a whole history in every element of a soundhack module :) i like to think we hit the sweet spot of expressive control for the user, and distinctive character in the sound
Keep doing these (and with less background music ideally, something that others have mentioned too). I really enjoyed listening to the panels from the 10 year Make Noise festival as well - apart from design and behind the scenes, it would be cool to see more stuff like that with artists too as either individually or as panels. The Make Noise albums/records could always be accompanied with a chat with the artist, for example.
I am trying to mute it in my head, its not working...its not as much the level...as much as it is...annoying. Like a brain experiment of trying to focus on what the people are saying. Great insight to the maker's ideas though.
It was wonderful to hear the variety of things which influenced Tom Erbe when he was creating the Mimeophon. I actually enjoyed the background music...it sounded like you had a Mimeophon Violin Quartet playing quietly in the background.💡✔
Tom Erbe is a great and inventive guy. I'm using the Soundhack software and his plugins for many many years now. Morphagene is one of my favorite eurorack modules and I'm really eager to get my hands on Mimeophon.
26:05 boss ps-2 also does a similar thing with its mode knob, but with less delay modes and with a very gritty sound, i really enjoy playing it almost like a rhythmic instrument and sampling noisy percussion lines from it
"We hope to be adding more content like this to our channel" yes please do! This kind of "interviews" are allways inspiring for me to make interesting noises with my modules... :) Thank you for uploading and sharing it with us! Cheers! :)
Nice interview! Always good to find out the inspirations behind great designs. I'm super excited for this module :) (I found the background music a little distracting due to panning though and maybe it should have been faded out during the interview.)
I can’t believe people are complaining. I think it’s great. It’s not something one is used to so it has a certain effect that for me is very desirable, in that it takes a mundane conversation into something quite strange and interestingly new. Like a breath of fresh air. Isn’t that what this is all about.? ?
Super interesting. Love my Effectron. Would love to hear more like this, particularly on the Morphagene, but honestly would love to hear more on things like the DPO, Optomix, René... You often hear many designers say things like inspired by xyz module. I would love to hear more elaboration on where they decided to take it further.
Is that an OG Shared System in the background when they cut to Walker ? Oh man.. I lusted after that System for some many years before I finished university and got a year of work under my belt after I graduated. I have the “OG” CV bus one.. with the elite case not the new metal one.. too bad you guys don’t use the elite cases anymore. I can imagine why. Anyway the Shared System is probably the best Eurorack INSTRUMENT still to this day. It clearly was put together as a coherent thought yet it can be used in an infinite number of ways. Thank you make noise for all you have done and continue to do for our community. Now to decide do I keep the echophone or update to the mimeophone. I went with the times on the Morphagene and I love it but also miss the lofi quality of the phonogene and it’s short sample time and no SD card caused limitations that can breed even more creativity
@@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC The space echo! I guess that version isn't a rack mount unit, but I love that tape delay. Watching the squiggly tape from the top is something I could do all day.
