- I read about this one today in Kenneth Williams' Diaries.
Do you know which word an actor was told to overdub ... and why ..?

The redubbed word was “bashful” replacing the original “backward”.
Give that man a cigar!
"Friday 30 October - 1964
Down to Pinewood by 10.00 to do some dubbing ... I had to substitute 'bashful' for 'backward' because the censor said it had a homosexual connotation. It was rubbish of course, but it earned me some more money."
It didn't tickle their Cleo Taurus.
I'll hazard a guess that it was "Julius". A wild guess - because the head censor's name was Julius and his wife objected? And his wife always got her own way. Made Calpurnia seem almost servile :-)
I guessed bashful but didn't know why ???
Correct! From Williams' diary:
"Friday 30 October - 1964
Down to Pinewood by 10.00 to do some dubbing ... I had to substitute 'bashful' for 'backward' because the censor said it had a homosexual connotation. It was rubbish of course, but it earned me some more money."
