- Let's face it, the typical automotive enthusiast is male, and if they are primarily interested in Old School American Muscle … well they are usually getting up there in age. On THIS project we are bringing you not only one mean looking mopar but a lady owned and driven one! Who says this is just an old boys thing? Who doesn't love a Lady Racer!?
When you see this car coming down the road, immediately you struck but the aggressive nose, massive hood scoop, and "California Rake" of a stance... not to mention the chrome tipped side pipes! The healthy rumble of an angry big block rumbling into your ears... it's enough to turn heads BEFORE you look in the drivers window!
As we begin this build up before the start of the 2019 car show and race season begins we wanted to show it off and introduce you to the owner Katrina Bell also known on Instagram as 73ChargerChic. What a blend of car and owner, THIS should be a fun package to see develop over the coming episodes!
Originally a 318 small block car sometime in its life it has been through the transition to the current 400 Mopar big block sitting between its fenders. While still cranking out some respectable torque the 400 was never known as being a performance motor for enthusiasts... however... It CAN make an excellent base to build from. So, here we go brought to you by Lucore Automotive in Columbus Ohio welcome to another build!

I'm building a 73 charger.....and I just fell in love! Mad props my lady. You stole my heart.
Thank you for the comment and the love! She's helped bring this beast to life almost every step of the way and there's a new update video coming soon!
Hope your project is coming along well, lots of updates on our end hopefully you've been watching!
Dude I'm on the same boat... I'm having trouble finding quarter window louvres. Do you have any idea on where to find them?
I just put my ‘73 in the shop today! New exhaust, vacuum control, etc. I LOVE my 73!
It's time to get the rides ready for fun in the sun! What's in your 73?
400 4bbl. 72 hideaway lights. Sweet ride. Working on her. She’s still new to me.
I can’t figure out how to post a pic to brag about her! Lol
Hope your '73 is out of the shop and out there having fun, we've made some pretty good updates lately on this project hopefully you are enjoying the process with us!
That's awesome I just recently bought a 1973 dodge charger myself 4BBlL 400 big block and it's a beauty needs some work but she's a beauty. Nice ride.
Well congratulations on the purchase! There is all kinds of potential in the platform, there's much much more coming with this car over the next few weeks hopefully you are subscribed!
My ‘73 is a dream come true! The ‘73 is starting to get some appreciation! She deserves it that’s for sure!
Good luck with your!
CHARGERS RULE!
@@jayd1464 They are a great platform to build from and are attainable for no where NEAR what the earlier generations are going for now. Not to mention there's a mile of room under the hood for.... well.. We'll see ;)
Hopefully you are enjoying YOUR '73 Charger! We've had quite a few updates posted lately, hopefully you have been watching!
I had a 1973 Charger SE. that’s a beautiful car but she is A Gorgeous Princess . 👍
Nice seeing a Princess building a muscle car .
Great video and Channel.
Yes indeed she is, and by she we mean both the car and the driver! Lots of fun and turning heads ahead of them this year! Thanks for the comment and compliments!
Lucore Auto and LucoreRacing
👍. Only in America 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
@@georgeharleydavidsonrider156 should be many years to come seeing these two beauties develop and grow!
Hope you are enjoying this process with us, have posted several updates recently!
The color on that car is amazing
Thank you! Its definitely an attention getting ride and driver!
Lucore Auto and LucoreRacing I love it you dont see teal.on a.mopar.very often but she wears it well and I love that bodystyle charger
New updates to the color and "style" over the winter should be turning even more heads in the spring!
Some guy in Ohio hit a Home Run with this lady . Hands on, getting greasy, Mopars, great looking, and I will bet she listens to some killer 70's 80's Rock the way she's throwing the horns ! She is Awesome ! 🤘🤘
Lol couldn't have said it better! AND did all that hard greasy work with her nails done! One of the future MUST HAVE pieces to this build is installing a stereo you can actually hear over the engine/exhaust so she can jam out to classic rock and haor metal ;)
@@LucoreAuto I don't care what Anyone says, Hair metal is sooooo addictive and just makes my day ! My musical tastes END in 1990. Today's white kids are deranged with all that rap garbage.
@@LucoreAuto That lady IS a dream come true. 🤘
@@shaunclifton5281 some of it, I don't understand how you listen to it and NOT want to sing along or head bang. And to think what we used to consider "hard rock" back in those days seems quite fun and enjoyable these days!
@@shaunclifton5281 she is indeed! Now if the world would just cooperate so she can go do racecar things again!
Wish I still had my 73 Charger. I will say my 400 had 4 bolt mains.. I eventually really warmed it up. 440 crank and rods, 440 heads and many other upgrades than had it finally running 12.09 1/4 times street legal still. This was back in the late 70’s early 80’s. Was young and dumb when I let it go but back then money was a need and the right offer came along. MEMORIES!
Awesome to see a lady into mopars. I have had my 73 charger for 23 yrs. Originally a 400 , it has a stroked ,440 now. A 505. I love love this car. I will never sell it. I actually have a 2nd one with a 400 as well. A his and hers if you will. Good luck with your project. Hopefully it brings you as much joy as mine has. Subscribed. Can't wait to see the progress.
Thanks for the comment, sounds like an awesome Mopar family! This will be her first foray down the path of "fun cars" and as I'm sure you can agree this thing will certainly be fun!
More updates to the Mommas Mopar project coming soon, thanks for subscribing!
Hopefully you are keeping up on the progress, the 400 is finally getting some love and got to make a couple runs on the dyno recently. Just about time for a "heart transplant" over winter!
My Lady has owned her 68 Dodge Dart since she was 17 first car ever, she also bought me one of my own for my birthday, "yes I helped" anyway so mine been on the road for 5 years, Twin 68 Dodge Darts Hers is Slant6 mine has a 318 swap.. both Cali cars, both, daily drivers .. Mopar Everyday and Everywhere.. peace
Well that is absolutely AWESOME! There's no comparison between a modern car and a classic for driving, there's just so much more experience and drama. And with a history like that, really really cool!
@@LucoreAuto Absolutely.. Even traffic is better in a Classic..
@@AtZero138 as long as you aren't battling overheating issues, yes for sure :)
@@LucoreAuto we live in Orange County California, it gets warm sometimes.. first real daily driver test is not only starting it's curing Overheating issues.. 105° stuck in traffic crawling sucks.. but they both passed the test, thank you Jesus Chrysler and Holy Mother Mopar. Amen
@@AtZero138 hahaha yes indeed! Starting when you're cold and relaxing in a garage is one thing! Starting, idling, stop and go driving are the REAL tests of a car and it's cooling
What mamma wants mamma gets 2 BEAUTIES
Yes indeed! She saw it and immediately loved it, can't wait to get the attitude upgraded on this beast for her!
Just a heads up, lots of updates to this project including a new updated dyno run that just went up!
Compared to a bunch of 400’s that have been run ragged on Quaker State with 80,000 mile oil changes , that lifter valley was nice !!
It's definitely not as bad as some we've seen! And seeing the journey this old 400,000 went on from this video til now... whew! It's fun to bring 'em back!
Lookin' good, Momma Mopar. :-)
I just bought a 73 Charger for my wife, & she cant wait for me to get it rebuilt so she can start driving it. It was also a 400 car, but the 400 is long gone. Probably going to pur a 383 in it.
HOWdy LUCORE & Momma MOPAR = KATRINA ,
I love you TWO in time-lapse ...
Thanks for the SERIES,
I would have been Oh! so disappointed - if - you hadn't spoken the word - SMUTZ " (smootz) at least once this episode !!!

I had a few later 70s bb mopars. I found them to be good motors. They didnt have hp because they were smogged to death. You dont know as much as you think you do.
The 400s definitely suffered from the era they were born in, with the smog regulations, fuel changes, and the changing economics of what Americans wanted to buy at the time. BUT, they have a lot of potential for sure!
Not sure what the last part of your comment is referring to, but this was VERY much a learning process for all of us.
They had low compression, that was the biggest power robber. Over 2 point deficit in compression compared to 1970 and earlier.
@@moparone7962 definitely one of the biggest issues that hobbled the later BBM, also many came with less than stellar 2 barrel carb/manifolds. Also your cams in that era were generally terrible for higher RPM power, more set up for low end grunt to move trucks and land boats.
@@moparone7962 yes. That was a shame. I found them still dependable as hell.
@@LucoreAuto yeah, at least they make a good foundation for a stroker. A little bit lighter than a RB block also. Then you can tell everyone its a 361 and actually its a 451 or 470, haha.
I'm happy for her! And as far as getting into the game there are plenty of guys like myself for instance who dont have any clue but want to learn about these machines. She knows way more than me I'm sure!!
By far the best way to learn is just to get in there and start working on it yourself. Once you get your hands dirty and start to understand it's all just nuts and bolts and mechanical things it all starts to click into place. If you haven't watched the whole series of her and her car you have some more watching to do for SURE! Thanks for coming by, hope you enjoy sharing the journey with us!
@@LucoreAuto Oh man, so glad i found your channel. I've already changed a valve gasket and fuel pump from watching thunderhead289. Forget Netflix I binge watch videos like these!
@@dreamingcode Well sit down, crack open an iced tea and enjoy probably 2 hours of this project ;)
im looking to buy one of these as my first classic car project. I wanna turn it into a theoretical 3rd gen Daytona with a nascar engine.
i have 73 charger 400 big block 4 barrel absolutely love it but im trying keep engine any ideas to make it faster perfomace wise??
Well you definitely picked a good car, we're fans ;) Is it a pretty much stock 400 4 barrel at this point? For the money honestly do a set of Aluminum heads, a camshaft upgrade paired with the heads, and a set of headers. These motors from the factory were pretty hobbled with low compression and setup to be more of a low end grunt motor. All things that can be fixed reasonably easily for not a TON of money.
Lucore Auto and LucoreRacing nice yea its pritty much stock only thing i swapp was carb with edlebrock ithanx for tip ill due just that love ur shows by the way keep old cars alive 😎 will they have all thies parts at summit ??
@@alvarez0892 you can get a decent cam and heads from Jegs or Summit, or call the folks at 440 source, also a great resource for the community! As long as the bottom end is fine (rods pistons crank bearings) you can really wake that 400 up without a huge cost! Just make sure she's healthy before you start throwing good money at a bad motor!
I thought the hideaway headlights with that grill were for 1971-72 only. Is that a custom job or an option?
She reminds me of Gidget in high school auto shop.
Don’t know if the question was asked yet but why not a 440 if using 440 heads?
That's a good question and something that oddly really hasn't been asked much. The answer is kind of 2 parts. 1) The car has a 400 in it now so we liked the idea of staying with that. It's also a physically smaller motor so easier to work on than the 440. Also the benefits of running a "cut down 440" rotating assembly in a 400 are pretty interesting, good bump in displacement with a lighter rotating assembly that should rev really well. 2) Everyone does 440 builds, and everyone has seen 440 builds. A 400-451 build is MUCH more unique
I completely see your point and actually agree with now thinking about it but was just curious and good luck with the build and will definitely be following it
can't wait for pt 2. just curious, why get another 400? why not just rebuild the one that's in it? she wants to keep it on the road while the other one is getting prepped?
There are several more parts to this project since this onez be sure to give them a watch! And yes you are exactly right, leave the car running and driving then swap it all in one shot. This way the car is down for ad little time as possible.
Sweet car
Was that a 1973? The grill was from a 1972 or 71.
Good catch! It's a 73 with a 72 nose :) Gotta get those hideaway headlights!
no matter what you build, nothing is more important than some sort of burnout an posi trac,or sure grip, an quality sticky tires...let me know things,an thanx..
Do you guys by chance still have all of the truck stuff off of this motor? I'm in Ohio as well and would take it off your hands if so.
We have a lot of it still, what are you looking for?
No, the motor mount bolts are NOT attached to the oil filter housing. The oil filter "housing" IS the oil pump. Motor mounts have there own Bosses that they bolt to.
Don't know how no one else has caught that after all this time since the video went up! Thanks for the clarification!
Lucore Auto and LucoreRacing Not ragging on you. I was just saying. It is a very beautiful car. I have the green car you see in my icon. A 1969 Daytona. A 1971 ‘Cuda. And a “66 Batmobile. It’s great that she gets in there and works her own car.
@@dodgedaytona25 not a problem at all! Sounds like you definitely have yourself a Mopar problem and have been down this road a time or two ;)
Lucore Auto and LucoreRacing Yeah just a little one. I’ve had the green ‘69 since 1983. Have had several more since then.
@@dodgedaytona25 once it gets in your blood, it never goes away. 73ChargerChic is just getting into the hobby/sport/obsession heaven help her!
Why do you have the idle set so high?
At this point on the project the ole 400 had more than a few issues so the idle was a bit high. Many things have changed since this was filmed, be sure to watch the series!
You can bet I'll be watching! I've got MOPAR in my blood! My blood cells are tiny Pentastars!
@@richardengland6952 well you've got a few hours of it on here already and soon to be more! ;)
I've never found a mopar big block bolt too break off anytime.
We were pretty darn lucky on most everything we have worked on with this thing. At least, so far!
@@LucoreAuto are you guys doing a 451 with the engine ? If so the stock 400 rod is a good one for a street strip engine, longer 440 rod is better for mid-upper rpm range. The charger would like the low end grunt with 3.55 or 3.73 gears
@@Moparmaga-1 going 451 with old school mopar crank and rods on a new set of ICON pistons. She'll definitely RPM better than this ole worn out 400. Excited to see what she makes on the engine dyno here in a week or so!
Oh the fun we have had with this thing over the past few months working on her! Sometimes parts get jealous of other new pieces and want to be replaced too....
My 1st car was, {you guessed it} a '73 Dodge Charger SE Brougham coupe (was there any others.. nah.. no 4 doors!) I did quite a few Tricks-n-such on Her &.. It freaked me out, as I put that same Monster Hood on my '73, but it rattled too much, so it went on my '66 Charger, and ended up with a lit-up L-88 {with custom Front breathable"Dragon-Eyes" design.
I am sure you 'asked her for protection, &' if 'she would like some gloves, and, yeah I 'member getting a Feel' for my Gal, and Never had to use any gloves on her! Enjoy Hun!
BTW, you sure do look like my ex, Carolyn S
Wow ! 😍😍😍😍
I wish I could show my 72

@@LucoreAuto yes i have subscribed and look to see more from memphis tennessee
Parts 2 and 3 are already up, part 4 is being worked on now!
She's definitely becoming more and more of a muscle car, lots of updates on the project!
i took a set of heads to Performance Research to get redone.
I wasn't impressed with them.
you might want to make sure they dont just send your engine elsewhere to get done, like M&M in Delaware
We are 100% sure the heads and everything are still there and Joe is wrenching on them. We actually do a good bit of business with Mike and the guys at M&M as well though. Dropping a motor with them Monday :)
I enjoy your channel perhaps just a little criticism less talking more hands-on keep up the good work though
I found a 73 charger to buy
Hope a lady as beautiful as you comes with it
If you can find that kind of package deal on the market, BUY IT!
How can you guys not know how to build a 400 into a 511?
What makes you think we don't? 😉
you may need oil pan and good aluminum heads an intake etc...performance an lighter,i know this guy is hittin her, you can sense it, he has too much control
idle it down some hunny..
What happened to your arms bro? Not so "puffed" up?
Hmm?
