I wish the judges just had the guts to say the obvious, how come Donna’s daughter has a different ethnicity to her parents rather than using the acting card. In her singing performances she showed a natural acting ability and the acting workshop with Mazz showed her making very different choices than the others (I actually think her choices were more believable). Still the show has undoubtedly broadcasted her tremendous talent and led to new opportunities in the West End for her.
No but colorblind casting is a thing, and you don't know yet the ethnicity of the fathers and the mother for next year shows.. I really hope West End can go that route or else this type of shows has no point casting diverse artists in the first place
Agree, all the non stereotype Sophie got eliminated in the end like Maddy and Leah before, the show is getting biased by times and it shows. Desmonda is so talented and been proven has amazing career even before this show aired but they make her like they use other excuse to not picked her as Sophie.
This is the problem I had and why I didn't want her to win. Colourblind casting is one thing, but if she got the part they'd have to find people to play the parents whose ethnicities match up so it makes sense. If for example Maddy got cast I would be saying the same, as she's mixed race they could use a black Donna and three white dads. But finding FOUR people of Indonesian descent to portray the parents of a clearly Indonesian Sophie would be difficult. I'm not saying anything about Sky's ethnicity as it's not a plot point and he can be any race. But Sophie's heritage IS a plot point and the parents' ethnicities have to match hers.
Desmonda is an incredible singer but I agree, regrettably, with the decision of her going home today as she just doesn’t quite have the acting talent expected as someone playing Sophie as it is a demanding role. She’s a star, for sure.
I'm not sure it's as bad as they make it seem. The parts the've shown of her in the acting workshop were short and it didn't include the more dramatic parts. They also don't get enough preparation time. I think they just need to find something to filter by especially when everybody is so good, so they latch onto something that's not really such an issue.
She also said on Instagram that she’s capable of better acting but struggled with trying to memorise a 2 page scene within 15 minutes in a 2nd language for her
Even though I secretly wish she would win, I have to agree that she's not Sophie. I think she would be perfect for sung through musicals like Les Mis though!

Singing is a talent but acting you can learn. That’s why you have lots of good actor who’s been to acting classes. Got rid of a natural talent.

Its not abt the singing its the acting and performing aswell she has a beautiful voice she is the best singer there but her acting isnt great
Beautifully sung, but Desmonda really has to work on her arm movements, and positions. They can be like dead fish.
