I have watched hundreds of volcanic activity videos on RUclips and this video has to be the most spectacular video of any volcanic activity I've seen so far, great job guys I'll be looking for more .

Watching videos like this one allows me to appreciate that the general idea of a volcano being a cone shaped mountain with a hole in the top is simplistic at best, and completely wrong at the worst. Sure there are some volcanoes like that, but more often than not a volcanic vent isn't a simple hole. This one appears to be horseshoe shaped, with the active part of the lava dome sitting in the middle a bit like a bath plug. At first I thought it was a straight line, and only when we got a distance shot did I see that it curved around. Not only that, but the vent itself appears to be a so-called ring fissure in the lava dome itself, as opposed to circling the dome's perimeter.
Condolence to all who died in this volcanic eruption. I am praying that those who were affected can be able to rise again and find strength and comfort amidst this great tragedy. Best regards to all my Indonesian brothers, Greetings from Philippines. 🇵🇭

Thanks, Joachim. I watched the crater from the summit for several hours to scope out the eruptions before approaching it to the rim. One of the most awesome purposes to use a drone. Awfully stable though. How can this rock hard stability be maintained in winds? There is not even jittering from compensation. Unless it is a big drone.

How did you get up the mountain? it looks from Google Earth that there is a track to some ag fields (coffee?) on the southwest flank at about 4700 feet. But above that point it seems to be jungle then scree to the top, which is 12,000 feet. Or did you come in from the north? Is the trail decent? Fantastic photography, thanks so much for sharing.
Yep, I went the usual trek up from the north, starting at the village of Ranupani. The last few hours up the scree are quite the workout, but well worth it!

Quadcopter, had no issues with navigation, just the strong wind.

The drone gimbal is surprisingly powerful indeed. The wind was actually quite strong up there that day, I almost didn't dare to fly at all.

Thanks, Ced. I waited several hours until the wind reduced just a bit and took my chances. Still pretty strong wind but the drone ended up coping ok.
