    I can confirm this works great. I did this on my excavator battery that was too dead to even turn on the gauges. Its been 3 months since performing this procedure and the battery still acts like new and cranks the diesel engine quickly. This may not revive every battery but it won't hurt the value of your battery as a core if you do this and it doesn't revive your battery. Good luck and I hope this saves you a few bucks when everything is so expensive.

    Your doing whats known as an equalization charge. Essentially, you are charging the battery at a higher voltage than it is typically charged to help remove built-up sulfate and balance the voltage of each cell. on the battery. Lead acid battery's only, never on AGM or lithium batteries.

    • @cphank151
      @cphank151 2 года назад +11

      Desulfation is typically done with short pulses of very high charging current with some resting between pulses to prevent the battery overheating. I assume your welder is set for DC reverse polarity so you won't be discharging at high current. This generates a lot of hydrogen for which is very explosive so be careful. Don't allow any sparking when connecting/disconnecting.

    I have a pair of AGM Optima 31T Yellow Top batteries ($375 each) since 2003 in my boat and they are as good as new. They sit on a marine battery maintainer 24/7/365. I take them out every year and test them on a 1,000 amp battery tester, and surprisingly they are good. My point here is that, if you take care of your batteries as shown in this video, even lead acid batteries can last indefinitely. Good video sir - you’re a National Treasure. Happy Holidays all! BTW, the high amps from the welder is cleaning the deposits off the lead plates, which acts like an insulator that reduces a battery’s voltage. Simple science that works.

    I recycle metals as a hobby and money earner. Son just delivered me a load of fairly new car batteries, supposedly maintenance free. Most fairly new, showed green or black eyes. But not enough to turn a starter motor. I picked a few and removed the caps from the maintenance free batteries. Some caps easy to get off, many are quite difficult. All the batteries had no liquid visible anywhere. Even though the eye was a green or black colour, the battery was not really useful. I even added demin water to 1 but could not get enough response. It appears the battery makers are making topping off the battery cells an impossible task to heighten their profits, part of being green sustainable. What a waste to the environment, batteries needing to be replaced needlessly. If you see a company using the word sustainability or any of its variants, the company is really talking about its profits and the use of those words have nothing to do with the environment.

    I got an easier tip to never have a dead battery. Install a 5W solar panel in your rear deck of the car and wire it to the battery. It will keep the car trickle charged daily when in the sunshine and never allow the battery to drop in voltage to the point of sulfating. It counters the constant 10s of milliamp drain on the sitting car's battery. Great for anyone parked outside and don't drive their cars often, like city dwellers. If the car is stored indoors, buy yourself a Battery Tender.

      I'm retired and drive my Ranger about 250 miles per year, so it was not uncommon for me to find my battery dead when I needed to go somewhere. I got tired of buying a new battery every year, so I bought a 20 watt solar panel off eBay (about $25), a 5 amp controller from AliExpress (little over $5) I just laid the solar panel in the bed of the pickup, ran a wire under the door to the controller I had hung on the back of the seat and plugged the controller into the cigarette lighter. The controller has a light on it to indicate when the battery is fully charged and I can see it from the kitchen window (that's why I hung the controller on the back of the seat.) I look out the window and if I see a green light, I know the battery is fully charged. I haven't had to replace the battery for six years and it's always ready to go when I am. If you have to leave the solar panel under the front or rear windshield, get the biggest one you can conveniently deal with as the glass will drastically reduce the panel's output. Those little 1.5 watt panels are useless behind a windshield, so don't waste your money on one.

    Unlikely this will work reliably. The normal chemical action of lead and sulfuric acid Will result in slight decline in the integrity of the lead plates over time. Charging reverses the process, but not 100%. “Boiling” a battery is helpful, but a desulfating cycle on some chargers takes a long time. In cases where the deposits are so deep the electrical current can’t get to the material, it’s stuck forever. This is why battery recycling companies salvage the lead and build a new battery. Just keep it charged and or buy a battery charger with a trickle charge desulfating setting.

    Well I got over 14 and 16 years out of factory installed "Panasonic" batteries in our Honda and Toyota in weather that goes from 30C to -25C. The trick is topping up the battery with distilled water every couple of years and a properly vehicle charging system. Your boiling of the battery is "cell equalization" which can only be done to a standard flood leaded acid (FLA) battery, not an AGM or GEL battery. Some chargers have that feature, or you can simply use the "winter" snowflake charging mode (higher voltage) in the summer.

    I always throw a charger on the car a couple times a year, while doing maintenance or just because.
    It's how I've had a couple of optima batteries last 12 and 14 years respective in daily drivers.
    In simple terms,alternators send dirty power and a charger helps top them off correctly.
    As a basic rule of thumb,it'll take an alternator up to 20mins to recharge a battery back to where it was before you used it to start the car.

      Wow you lack of electronics and stating alternators send dirty power blows my mind, as an electronic engineer I can tell you that most alternators on modern cars send in around 100+ amps are very well regulated, the reason why batteries fail are the following
      Over and under temperature, think you are starting in snow and then 20-30 minutes that battery has gone from ice to living next to a hot engine.
      Second the battery manufacturing build in a shelf life of a few years by making plates thinner and closer together so under high load they buckle and short
      Third the gap on the bottom from the plates is less so deposits[sediments] can now grow and short out cells,
      Finally the reason why this welder trick works it literally has dirty power ie no safety it boils the sediments away clearing anything low down in the cell, it will blow shorts away, it will force a charge onto a cell that may have bad chemistry on the surface of the lead plates... Basically think of rusty bolt and hitting so hard the rust drops off.
      So alternator is like trying to gently on rusty bolt and welder is like here have a sledgehammer. That been said we all have used a sledgehammer hammer when needed so this welder trick is valid. But no modern alternator sends dirty power otherwise you ECU and other electronics will nor last. Also if you don't have a background in the field don't make half arse guesses at thing you don't understand.

      Think in watts and it makes more sense, volts x amps. your welder is putting out a lower voltage at a higher current. Example, 15V x 22A = 330W. Your welder will be drawing a bet more from the power outlet because nothing is totally efficient, so maybe 350W. So 350W ÷ 120V = 2.9A, so about 3A.

    Good video, but I would probably remove the battery from the vehicle, if at all possible, to prevent any possible battery acid damage which is not usually evident until it's too late. This next task can simultaneously test the theory that no acid is boiling off.. Lay down some new Levi blue jeans around the battery, then do the battery boil, then wash the blue jeans, then after drying the blue jeans, count the number of holes in the blue jeans from the battery acid to give a reference point as to the potential for battery acid damage. Plus now you'll have some jeans with that much sought after worn out, and moth-eaten look. Simultaneously protecting the engine compartment, and making you look cool in your custom jeans.

    I did a battery with this method and had some success. I extracted some of the water from each cell and it is quite black. Does this black particulate reattach to the plates? Can I replace the water with new clean distilled water as you mentioned that the acid is not boiled away but only the water?

    • @SweetProjectCars
      @SweetProjectCars  2 года назад +2

      Just top off the cells to within an inch of the top with this amzn.to/3gb9Ni0 before beginning this process, then again during the resting times as needed. It's not necessary to remove any of the water, just follow the instructions in the video to a T. Watch this ruclips.net/video/VYtkn-N_p4s/видео.html for additional helpful information about this method. Thanks for watching Robert, have a great day and all the best on your project. mad Mike the hammer SPC

    You may have answered this already but I didn't see it below. I'm guessing that this doesn't work on a "maintenance free" battery that doesn't have the caps on top. Correct?

      Hello John, this works on wet-style only batteries, you have to have access to the water to use this method. Thank you for watching and asking, have a great week. mad Mike the hammer SPC

    Dirt is the most common battery killer rinse the batter off after it cools with baking soda and water to remove any acid particles left around, as it vents it out over time, keep it clean!

    I understand that the reason batteries fail is they short out at the bottom of the fluid. The residue flakes off the plates and builds up on the bottom until it touches across plates and shorts out. Long life batteries just have deeper holding tanks with shorter plates.? So don't you need to suck all the fluid out to get the residue out, then filter it back into the battery? Or will the boiling dissolve this residue? does it plate it back onto the lead plates?

      Yes, it works, all batteries had caps, even under stickers, open them and if the battery is an AGM type only put distilled water, do the trick with the welder and it works fine, i did it a lot of times with lead acid, agm and apparently “sealed” batteries.
