  • In the Kettle River Range of Northeastern Washington, wolves are being killed to protect livestock that graze on public lands. A lone range rider, Daniel Curry, works year-round using nonlethal mitigation methods to help prevent wolves from looking at cows as a food source-and to prove that coexistence is possible.

Those range riders do an amazing job, what a life to be able to spend a lot of time outdoors in the wild riding horses and working with cattle and wolves but it's definitely a tough job and not for everyone. The life of small cattle ranchers is very often a struggle and I respect them.

Another top shelf doc Patagonia. Daniel, I am 66 and traveled all over the American west learning about water issues, wolf issues, and land management issues in the past 40 years. Worked as a carpenter for many years for people on both sides of many of these issues in several states. I was not in anyone's camp or side. I wanted to follow where my heart's calling lead me. You are on such a path. Continue to follow your heart and your bliss and be the best human being you can and doors will open and helping hands will arrive, of this I know first hand. It is not easy, but it is worthwhile. Strive on.....

White man, as a generalization, since being sent to North America has deconstructed and attempted to create their ideal… and it is proven to be deadly for most everything . . . Sorry to observe conservationists who ignore their most important resource, EARTH (and not their unwillingness to improve our environments).

I’m working on a photography project about the (hopeful) reintroduction of wolves here in the UK so I was stoked to find this. I’m still amazed at the sensationalism and lack of reason and evidence that goes with the anti-wolf lobby narrative. Satanism?! Please. But seriously, a superb film and that half hour flew by. Seems to me that 500 cows killed in eight years on one ranch is a lot of evidence. Everyone hopes this program will work, but there's certainly no conclusive proof that it does. The strength of this film is showing both sides of the story and laying out the facts.

This is a great piece done by Patagonia- really digs into the heart of our conversation on cohabitation of animals and their prey. There is a great film called "Never Cry Wolf" from the 1980's that also explores this relationship with the added filter/lens of tribal rights/sovereignty.

Daniel bring out a missing and important element to raising cattle - direct, everyday, care. And that's what's required to keep cattle safe. But when people can just go to the supermarket and pick up a roast, or ground beef for burgers - there's absolutely no way to understand the real cost of eating meat. It is expensive and way beyond the dollar.

Can this man teach these skills to others? Maybe to some. This is a rare man who does what he believes and hurts none, if possible. His experiences and beliefs create something possible.

    • @cbxxb4841
      @cbxxb4841 5 месяцев назад

LGD don’t really work as well with cattle as they do with sheep because cattle disperse over a large area. The film was misleading in that the rancher featured was a very small operation. I agree about the border collies and can only guess the guy is not a dog man, not everyone is. Bigger question, why doesn’t he have any horses?

Both sides are wrong. Its possible for us to Co exist, but only through proper management. Wolves and humans have lived together for eons. When wolves over popolate, and they will, they wipe out the local game until their numbers dwindle from lack if prey. If the state would issue tags for wolves, it would pay for the resources to keep their numbers right. No tags whens theres not enough wolves. This plus range riders would pretty much make the problem go away plus pay for more conservation. This exactly same model works for predators all over the country and even other parts of the world. The same people that get mad about responsible harvest of predators are the ones that don't understand that trophy hunting in Africa saved almost all of the big 5

    • @fish-gz6np

Wrong trophy hunting and trapping is NOT Conservation, it never was and never will be. There's many non-lethal methods to keep wolves and other predators at bay. Ecotourism brings in way more money than trophy hunting. Also wolves aren't a crop, you don't harvest wolves, it's candy coating slaughter, murder, and eradication. Which is exactly what Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming are trying to do, our essential wolves are endangered or close to it. Wolves don't wipe out ungulates, they keep herds healthy and thriving, while keeping diseases like CWD at bay.

One farmer in this video claims he had lost 500 cattle to wolf predation. How many cattle does he run? That’s a huge loss. How many years does this claim represent. Does this number include all other losses? It is natural to lose a certain percentage to other causes. A loss of 500 cattle to wolf predation in that whole region by all farmers would be pretty extreme. It would be interesting to see this farmer’s books.
I understand the loss of ANY cows or calves is devastating. But this claim seems excessive for one farmer. Exaggerating claims does not help to draw support for farmers.
It would be interesting to see the actual numbers.

If this was mentioned in the film, sorry I missed it, but the Diamond M is right on the Canadian border south of Christina Lake. The wolves will come and go across the border the same way the deer, elk, moose, sheep and now turkeys do. There is a generous hunting season for wolves in that part of BC too by the way and no, hunting them hasn't decreased their populations measurably.

This documentary won’t give both sides of the argument. I applaud Daniel’s efforts, what this lacks to show is the wolf pack depredation that is continuing in the area, and casts those who are affected in a negative light. There are extremists on both sides, people may feel threatened by range riders, but wildlife officials who are hired by the state to shoot wolves have to hide their identities because of death threats. The same people who are applauding the wolf introduction will never live in an area where they will have to worry about wolf encounters.

Not even sheep, hogs, birds, just cattle -insanity. The lust for beef is slightly excessive, and that’s not just my opinion. A lot of Americans can’t go a day without multiple times eating animals piled on top of each other.

Props for Daniel! This wouldn't be an issue after all if people would switch to a plant-based diet and let animals live free!

I can't wait for the day these ranchers shut up shop for good.

Same, I will never support or have any sympathy for welfare ranchers and farmers, they don't belong on wildlife land, period.

The correct thing to do is to allow the state to manage them it’s not just the ranchers hurting it’s the mule deer elk sheep population are gonna feel it too

Wrong, wolves belong there, welfare ranchers and farmers and their invasive livestock don't. The correct thing to do is, end welfare ranching and farming. There's plenty of non-welfare ranchers and farmers out there to support.
