Jim Palmer told a story on the air on Sunday. He said he won the CyYoung 3 times, but was only an All Star for one of those 3 seasons. Let this be a lesson to the snubs.
I think Westburg and GRod will use Their snubs as motivation to have an even better second half. Go O’s!!!

Across the country Little Leaguers are on the march to Williamsport for the LLBWS. The most interesting aspect/parallels from LL to MLB is the controversies surrounding All-Star selections. Do a segment or article on what’s happening in LL boardrooms and how it will continue in HS with All-League selections, through college with conferences to MiBL to the show! A lot to cover there but man Little League is in another world. One thing is for sure, it’s not stopping anytime soon!!!

Ken, with all due respect (and that's a lot of respect, btw), I cringe when you say the Orioles won't spend a lot of money on a starter, because "that's just not who they are." I understand the logic behind that statement, and it's not unreasonable based on what we saw when the Angelos family owned the team, but visit the O's website, and what you'll see on the homepage is THE NEXT CHAPTER. Now, we don't know exactly how the new ownership is going to run things, but it's premature to rule them spending the money to resign Corbin Burnes, particularly if the team goes all the way. Just how different the next chapter is going to be remains to be seen, but unless you're privy to Warehouse secrets to the contrary, you should at least be open to the possibility things could be changing, right?

The Orioles do not need to spend on a big starter. This October is almost certainly going to be NY, Cleveland, Houston and Seattle as teams the Orioles need to beat. The Yankees will not compete with the Orioles in a series, we own them and I’m not remotely worried about them. Seattle has incredible SP, but we have too many hitters that turn mistakes into souvenirs and our starting pitching isn’t bad either, but the gap between their SP and our SP is significantly smaller than our lineup and their’s, we will prevail in 5 or 7 no problem. Cleveland has a better bullpen, but I think we have better SP and our lineup is much more dangerous and consistent, yes if they’re hot they will be the team to beat in October, but if they’re normal, the series will probably go 5-7 games in a 5/7 game series, but we will win out and expect a few very lopsided games back and forth. That leaves Houston, they have a lot more playoff experience, they have better starting pitching if they’re guys are pitching characteristically and their bullpen is good enough to where they might blow a lead once throughout the series, but they’ll lock down more than they don’t. If we add a dominant reliever or two to the bullpen we will win that series for sure, but without it, if we lose any of Burnes/Grayson’s starts, we will lose the series over 7. I’m not worried about any NL teams, and if we bolster that bullpen significantly, I don’t see anyone beating us. I think Norby and Mayo need to get called up because if they come into their own before October, putting a lineup together of Gunnar, Adley, Santander, OHearn, Kjerstad, Mountcastle, Westburg, Cowser, Mullins with Norby, Mayo, Hays and potentially even Holliday off the bench, could be the difference in a win versus a loss against aces because all of them have 25+ HR power which drastically increases the odds a mistake will leave the yard. And you still get good speed off the bench if you need to manufacture a run late because Adley, Mounty, Tony and O’Hearn can’t steal bags, and Kjerstad is also questionable on that front, but Hays and especially Holliday have great speed. So the lineup is secure, I also think Basallo should replace McCann once September comes so he doesn’t lose his rookie status and we get that bat available to us in October because I think he’s going to be the best all around hitter amongst this group when all is said and done, Miguel Cabrera from lefty box. Cabrera and the 90s Marlins is also why we should call these guys up and put them on the field, remember these guys won a championship in Norfolk last year so as far as they’re concerned, as a team, they’re reigning champions. They’ve played close games, tough games, meaningful games in their own right in terms of pressure, and they came out on top. You also could sneak Norby, Mayo and Basallo into October with no scouting report on them, especially Basallo. Because that kid crushes mistakes, especially to the opposite field like Heston, and he’s a great bad-ball hitter. If you don’t have a scouting report and you pitch him in a predictable manner, and he knows what’s coming, you’re gonna watch that ball get real small real fast. So the Orioles have Bradfield Jr, maybe Stowers, Chayce McDermott, Beavers, Horvath and maybe Fabian as well available to trade to get a Mason Miller, and preferably another good arm, maybe Tanner Scott, but Seth Johnson, Basallo, Mayo, Norby, Kjerstad, Holliday and everyone else up with the big league club need to stay with the team. Seth Johnson could wind up being a quality starter, or a dominant reliever, and the rest are the team of the future on the field. I think we are going to have to part ways with Hays, Mountcastle, Mullins and Mateo eventually at one point or another, and hopefully we can keep everyone else. Holliday, Cowser, Kjerstad, Westburg, Gunnar, Mayo, O’Hearn, Santander, Adley, Basallo, Norby is the team of the future including Holliday moving to the outfield(Kjerstad is a much better fielder than we know because he’s made every play in his direction this year, but he has a plus arm that we haven’t seen yet so if Holliday improves his arm as he finishes growing with his athleticism he would be good for left and we’d have 3 very strong arms and range in the OF. Norby would be Ben Zobrist reincarnate, super utility, playing most games, but playing all over including the OF giving guys a day off. Tony will eventually be the everyday DH. Whenever plays 3rd better between Westy and Mayo should be the everyday 3rd baseman and the other 2B, with O’Hearn drastically improving his defense at first as he becomes the everyday first basemen, if he can’t then Tony would take that role, but if Mayo plays a better first base, westy could go to 2nd and O’Hearn can play third since his only downside at first is fielding throws especially ones in the dirt and that can’t exist, first base has to be a vacuum for throws. With outfield arms they both will have plus arms for 3rd. Basallo is the backup catcher, with him DHing other days, but he has a plus arm so if his defense/framing gets comparable to Adley, then he would be able to catch most days with Adley DH’ing. There’s a wide range of possibilities since Basallo and Adley could also play first, and Adley could probably even play 3rd. The bottom line is that you have 11 bats that you would love to have in the lineup everyday, and a ton of versatility for who can play where in the field. You’ll have matchup lineups, getaway day lineups, off day lineups, but you’ll have no bad days at the plate. Over time, I believe Basallo, Gunnar and Kjerstad will be the best hitters in the lineup in terms of overall ability because I think they’re all gonna hit 310-320+ while flirting/surpassing 40HR/year and touching 50+ a few times with low strikeout rates, and will eventually become known as Murderer’s Row with Adley, Tony, Westy, Holliday, Mayo and Cowser competing for the 4th spot in that row. It doesn’t hurt that they’re all built like NFL players instead of ball players because I’m looking forward to seeing guys like Cowser, Mayo, Basallo when they’re done filling out and are full grown men.

  • @TheOrangeCorner

When this team is in their 30s, especially Holliday, Cowser, Gunnar, Adley, Kjerstad, Mayo, Westburg, Basallo, the core 8(go figure it would be 8 guys right? In Cal’s Name We Pray)and they’re fully grown/developed with 8-10 years of big league experience under their belt, it’s going to be super ridiculous. It’s going to cost 150-175 million to keep them, but it’s well worth it. Another 75-100 million for some starting pitching and relievers, and you got yourself a dynasty. Which is why selling the farm for individual players isn’t possible. All of those 8 guys are going to be worth Crochet and Miller together and more, and that’s if they have the careers people hope they will have. Hays doesn’t have it, yes he’s extremely talented, and if he’s hot he will hit well, but he’s not the type of talent that gets to elite pitching when they’re on their game. Mounty still has a chance to adjust and become something closer to that kind of guy than hays, but I don’t think he will be valuable enough to this team to keep him unless he struggles just enough to where other teams don’t want him and being our 8-9 hitter and defensive replacement at first will be his best option. Norby will have more value because he can play more positions and be less of a clog on the bases while their bats are virtually the same. I think Norby is a 25-30HR guy, but 20 for sure and I think he will hit 250-275. His benefit at the plate is his size, or lack thereof. With all these big guys in the lineup, having a guy that forces pitchers and umpires to adjust their location/strike zone can lead to favorable calls for the big guys up in the zone which could force thigh high pitches that go 400+ feet. Lastly, Mounty is a great hitter with nobody out, but if there’s one out he becomes worse and with 2 outs he’s guaranteed to end the inning. It’s like the more time he has to sit and wait to come up to the plate, the more he struggles, but if he grabs a bat and hits, he’s a different guy. I didn’t even have to look the other day when he went deep in Oakland, I knew it was with nobody out, so imagine my surprise when I saw it was with one out. Then I realized only 1 pitch was thrown to get that out, and it all made sense. So I think Norby will be better off the bench and in big situations, plus I think Mounty feels like he has to do well because he’s the veteran and feels responsible for leading the guys by example which is absurd. It was his clubhouse leadership that led to these guys being able to blossom into professionals. Without getting a hit he’s done his job. And I wish he would turn into a quality at bat, every at bat, and sacrifice the homers. His 0-0/0-1 swings are so unnecessary. He’s got HR pop without them for one, two, we just need a basehit dude with this line up. I’d trade all his homers for those patented Mounty doubles hooking into the corner in this lineup. I wish he would shorten up and hit like he’s got 2 strikes the whole AB, but with the ability to take something close so he doesn’t have to swing on that breaking ball at the bottom of the zone thinking it might be a fastball, or not break, and miss by a mile. If he hit 10 HR all season, but hit .300+ and struck out at an elite 10-15% rate, he would become a staple in this offense and would drive in 125 and score 125 runs and all he has to do is forget homers and shorten up like he’s got 2 strikes. His struggles lead to pitchers coming at him in a more typical way instead of treating him like the Judge of Baltimore, and he’s already got the experience, baseball IQ, swing and eye to accomplish this, but he’s lacking the belief that he can stop going deep and contribute effectively. He’s a perfect example of the luxury of this team, everyone can pass the baton, avoid feeling pressed to be the hero, work on different aspects of their game and improve until they’ve perfected things as best as they can while the rest of the lineup covers the hero role. That’s the main reason these guys need to stay together, for the benefit of the teams success and their own. In this lineup they will learn from one another, together without the pressures of performing every night. Between seeing much better pitches when you’re surrounded by elite hitters and being able to sacrifice one area of your game to improve another before you’re able to put it all together, even if you struggle in that time, will be how these guys fulfill and exceed their potential. If they do this, they will accomplish things very few, if any, have accomplished before them, they will experience MLB in ways very few ever have and they will have the best possible chance of reaching cooperstown. If they chase the paycheck they could still achieve cooperstown, but it’s a variable no one can account for with certainty, and they certainly will not accomplish or experience the same things because only together will they finish every season over .500 for 10-15 years, reach the playoffs 90% of their career, win double digit AL Pennants and acquire more rings than Brady. Be smart guys, you’ll make more money than you’ll ever need even if worse players at your position make more money on other teams and you’ll have careers that will carve your names into history books without question, careers that will live on and be celebrated long after your retired. The banners you fill Camden yards with will be your permanent marks, and the team will bring you guys back to celebrate anniversaries, retire your numbers, induct you into the team hall of fame and you’ll share in all of that with fans that will worship you generation after generation. You can’t put a dollar value on the accomplishments you have the opportunity to experience as a team, with the city of Baltimore and baseball fans around the world. The 2020s-2030s Orioles will be equivalent to the 90s bulls, the 20s/90s Yankees, the 2000s Patriots, the big Red machine, the Chiefs of today and then you. Money comes and goes, glory is forever!

The All-Star game was more fun to watch when A. They didn't use the DH.. B. the NL only had 12 teams.. AL 14 and it was less an issue to have 1 rep for every team.. right now.. That one rule is killing the game. Should be standard roster size with who cares if your bad team has a rep.. kudo's if they do. Personally, I have not watched the AS game in over 25 years... once they started expanding, the game lost the lustre.. more fun back when guys like Fred Lynn hit his Grand Slam... when AL and NL were proper names for them as they only crossed that line in the world series.. now.. it's a joke. It also helps when they were getting paid peanuts and it was a big bonus for them..now with UFA's and the big deals.. most of the best just can't be bothered.
