Nice overview. I've always liked Canon camcorders for all the pro features they cram into an inexpensive consumer package. I'm a big fan of the LCD joystick as well (I've got an Canon HFS100 that has one). If you ever add an LCD hood to shade the sun, the stick and function button will remain uncovered so you can still adjust everything. Try that on a touchscreen!
@mrwhitebp there should be an 'audio' option in the menu to switch from the built in mic to the external. I don't have the camera on hand, but the option should be in the camera record settings, or camera options.
@Airsmoke99 the 24p means it will record at a 'frame rate' of 24 fps - frames per second - similar to the frame rate of film (the most common video frame rates are 30 fps or 60 fps) The setting will simply give your videos more of a 'film look'
@mussonman if you already own it, yes. if you are planning to buy it for that specifically.. hmm.. sure? it does offer a lot of the manual features you'd need.
@jimendo45qf Well, spending some time on the camera and researching, I found that there is a known 'clicking' noise that is heard when in auto-focus mode. Internal mic picks up the sound of the focus motor. That's a huge issue. The Canon VIXIA HF R200 seems to not have that problem and still features an external mic jack. Might be a better cost-effective alternative.

@Knoptop Thank you for getting back with me. I had read about the noise issue. I looked at the HF R200 it looks very similar with the exception of the joy stick. Something I know that you don't care for. I wonder if it has all of the same manual features. The price is better largely due to no internal memory I imagine. I plan on shooting demonstration type videos working by myself I wonder if there is an optional remote control? Do you have a tutorial on shooting with your iPod? Thanks again
Thank you for the overview. Got this camera to prepare for a video assignment in a very short time-- and am totally lost on how to get 'the best of of it" . Touch screen spoiled. But got the basics here... going watch it again. Hopefully, will get it by tomorrow.
@Knoptop I think on my Sanyo it just gives a small boost to the colors not really a big deal. The only time I use it is when I do iPhone and Android APP reviews because recording on the screen I lose color. But for normal stuff I like to work in post.
@DeepFriedPoopHeads I couldn't tell you if it's 'better'.. but the canon vixia hf r21 is a little newer and features a touch screen and larger internal memory. So, without having tested that camera, it'd be up to what you want for the money.

Hey you shot this a while back have you done more with this camera? Do you still like it and recommend it for someone that is interested in doing video/songs lo-budget.... Did you do a mod on adding Micro-Wide angle lens.... Since the time has passed is there a camera that has taken the place of this one in your mind? LIke your stuff very much appreciate it... Jim
I bought a headphones plantronics with a mic integrated and pluged it to the camcorder but doesn't work should I change something in the menu? I cannot see anything into the menu? help out please!!
Hi i have the Kodak Zi8 and its a great HD Camera with mic input, but it doesnt have,light and if you move it really quick, the image looks like if it was jello... Does the Canon VIXIA HF R10 has light and the function to avoid bad image when moving? I use it for flight filming and por travel blogs and news, thanks for the help!
For that kind of price getting a mic input is terrific. This would make a good backup for a DSLR. Two of them would make a nice 3D rig too. Hard to believe how fast the prices are dropping.

Best to turn of x.v.Color what it does is boost the color but that is bad if you want to work in post with your video editor problem and play with the colors your self. Its good if that's what you want on the fly.
I have used a Vivian hf r300, my problem with it is its noise texture and its bad low light ability. Sadly I can get better video with my ipad with the right app.

Its to bad whenever someone does a review for a camera the quality is horrible because they are reviewing the camera the usually film with!!! Most reviews are recorded with a calculator!

@kaox23 I use the Audio-Technica ATR 35S lapel mic, and the azden sgm-1x boom mic. These work nice for most cameras. Not sure about the light.

I have this camera, and the Zi8 and the Creative Vado 3rd gen. The Canon Hf R10
is the best bang for your buck. I love it.

@mp4podcastDOTcom interesting, tho, even with this feature activated, i noticed the colors still aren't too 'vibrant' (compared to the zi8)

no hotshoe adapter on this camera. you could always look into a L-bracket mount for accessories
