Gladiator is one of those movies that didn’t need anything done to it. Also the fact that even Russell Crowe had no idea they were making a sequel speaks volumes.
💯 The complete lack of Crowe's involvement was always a red flag, not even some dreamlike sequence or some ethereal voice from Elysium to Lucilla; worse, is that he wasn't invited to any premier screening, not even the Royal one and Crowe is Australian (Commonwealth).
Seeing the thumbnail with another guy doing the rub sand/dirt in his hands, gave me the same feeling as when the guy who's supposed to be the replacement to Jim Carrey's dad, from Liar Liar, does "the Claw"...
Wasn't going to see it anyway. Gladiator didn't need a sequel, especially after almost a quarter of a century. In that vein, thanks for going to see it and confirming my thoughts. To quote Animal Mother in Full Metal Jacket, "Better you than me."
One of my favorite movies of all time! When I heard they were making a sequel, I knew it would be bad. As another commenter said on another video: I expected nothing yet I am still let down.
I'm not seeing this movie, Ridley Scott has sunk deeper and deeper into mediocrity, Napoleon was the last straw, it was such a terribly boring movie that i don't think after that i can genuinly give another chance to this director. Would need a miracle.
I watched this yesterday. During the entire "shark scene", I was trying to wrap my head around the logistics of what was taking place. I kept coming to the conclusion that, "This doesn't make any f'ing sense!".
In a way, this movie is historically accurate in that the Principate era of Rome ended not terribly long after the reign of Commodus (the emperor in the first one), which brought on the Crisis of the Third Century.
I thought it was rubbish. Space Monkeys, Sharks in an arena, Denzil chewing up the scenery like Pacino in a toga. Story could have been written on a postage stamp.
i gather they tried to get away with "eye candy" and could not even get that right, forget story and acting 🤔 THANK YOU Michelle-with-two-Ls for always being a straight-shooter with us 👍☺
I figured this would be the case. I did not plan on seeing it as I thought the original Gladiator pretty much wrapped things up well. Sad to hear there were poor SFX . The way of movies lately I guess. Thanks for the review Michelle.
I mean, you kinda confirmed what I had suspected, as it seems like Ridley is done. Napoleon was an insult to the history of the man's character (as I heard), and I feel like Paramount said "Name a budget to make Gladiator 2 and we'll do it." and Ridley said a stupidly high number, because he didn't want to do it, but Paramount paid for it. The man can direct, but whomever he gets for writing these days tends to be complete ass at it.
I am upset there were no sorts of meta narratives or overarching themes, in the first half of the movie, I was really confused and felt like i had brain damage because the story was so hollow, but then when they started to introduce the plot near the end I was like ahh ok, I guess they were saving it for later..' Denzel Washington was the only char in this movie I liked
Haven’t seen you do a review in your car for a while now, so it’s great to see you do it again Michelle. I didn’t expect too much from Gladiator II. It did get a B on Cinema Score. Nothing can beat Gladiator. The first one was truly epic 🤩
Hello Michelle. It has been a great long year and a month since I commented here in this space, when you and Natalie viewed 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. That was an enjoyable watch view. I have been busy with my voice acting career. More on that later. Yet, I am happy to be back seeing you both crushing it on RUclips! Yes, there are films that have aged well over the past couple of decades. While some others have not so much. And for good reasons. Since, these past twenty-four years the original 'Gladiator' is a masterpiece in its own right for circa 2000. I had no interest in this sequel. It was sincerely a cash grab and banking way too much on nostalgia. The original film should have been truthfully a one-and-done standalone feature. I agree with you on the after thoughts. Even nostalgia needs its time to rest. The first film had merit, talent and opulent vision in scope and life. This film, is a shadow and thought of it's predecessor. However, I am glad to be back. And looking forward to chatting with you both and the community in the live streams. Great review.
'Are you not entertained?' Yeah from everthing I read or saw regarding this turkey. Was pretty sure no one would be entertained by Gladiator 2. Thanks for the video Michelle!👍
I'm an AMC A=Lister so I get 3 movies to see per week but based on the reviews that I've read and seen, this movie seems to be very 'meh' so I won't waste my time on this movie. Thanks Michelle
We finally got cable tv in 2002. The first move my dad and I watched together was Gladiator. He loved it. My dad lived to be age 89 and passed in 2011. I’ll always have fond memories for the original movie.

*_SPOILER ALERT_* … … … The script is the only problem but it is everything. Denzel's Macrinus singlehandedly killing the two-twin Emperors was totally ridiculous. The *Senate & Praetorians* were sleeping the entire time?? The *_Emperors_* were sidelined and shouldn't have been; Geta should've had a bigger role. Macrinus, notwithstanding his ethnicity but being just a slave trader, his prominence & influence in the halls of the Senate was very historically inaccurate, almost laughable, and not justified in the film. The massive-gaping plot hole is Macrinus's motivation to kill Lucilla but _not Lucius!?_ Also, Lucilla's death was not handled well at all and Acacius exited the film too soon; perhaps there's an extended-director's cut. Lastly, Macrinus riding away but engaging with Lucius at the end was incredibly out-of-character for Macrinus, despite the age difference; if he had the smarts he portrayed throughout the film, he would've ran (on horseback) straight into & behind “his army”-Legions & Praetorians that were loyal way too quick!! _There is no sequel to _*_Gladiator._*
started slow but it wasnt horrid. I know it wasnt going to be as good as the first. It didn’t move seamlessly like first it the second half picked up and would give it 7 out of 10 stars
I was not excited to see this one. I've only heard bad reviews thus far. I think I may just save my money and not see it. It's fun as you were saying just go and see the first one again, the first time watch of the first Gladiator movie that you and Natalie did popped up as a suggestion. I may just rewatch that. You two are a joy to watch anyways. Take care, Michlle!
I have not seen yet but very excited too cause I enjoyed the first one so much, it's unfortunate I heard so many bad reviews but I do plan on seeing anyway..ps: he fights a monkey!?! wtf! 😂😂😂
Just saw this today girl. Yeah I had the meh's. First thing I noticed - I was seeing all these written reviews, or these promotions of people saying HOW AMAZING IT WAS on Facebook videos fresh outta the theater, leading up to the release date, but clearly they were paid for. But yeah, compared to the first it was so hollow. I dont know how people cannot compare the two, when this movie has flashbacks, nostalgia, over and over connected to Maximus. Denzel Washington is a great actor, yes, but he was chewing the scenery so much, and his accent felt like it belonged in Philly, or NYC, not ancient Rome. Speaking of accents, I liked how the twin brothers, one was british, the other was sort of British, then full American accent after awhile. lol. Their acting was so over the top, almost like a SNL parody sketch. Compared to Joaquin's evil Emperor who you hated in the first... It just didnt land. It just felt like a pretty HOLLOW movie, pretty to look at in scenes, but overall... meh.
I hear that a lot now, as well as notice it myself, regards the CGI being better 10 - 15 years ago than now, even though technology has progressed... And my theory is quite basic really: When they used to make a lot of the fact that it used to take like, a week or more for ten guys to render one frame, it was laborious, expensive, and time consuming. But with more powerful computing and rendering tools now available, this work can be cut in half, and half again etc., both in terms of time and manpower, it means it's gotten too easy to do, and the level of attention to each frame, and component of each frame is of course, much less; Meaning that, although it's great to be able to just throw a digital wire-frame up, and hit: "Render", and there you go... done!... the quality will suffer because people are not really labouring over it, and what with the pressures of budget and time, it's just too easy to take the shortcut, and let the computer do the thinking for you. Better is not always better... or at least not in a very specific way, and is often worse.
I can confirm this, but it's not necessarily a matter of laziness on the part of the animators. The fact is, as technology has improved, studios think they can demand more and more CGI with shorter and shorter turnaround times. This results in the CGI being contracted out to a plethora of overseas animation studios that hire inexperienced and overworked animators for less than they are worth. These animators may have only a day or two to animate a scene, or they are animating a scene only for it to get scrapped and they have to completely redo it. My point is essentially the same as yours--it's not the technolegy that's gotten worse, it's the working conditions. James Cameron has proven that given sufficient planning, sufficient resources, and sufficient time, modern CGI can transcend older CGI. But the Avatar films are an exception rather than the rule. 😢
Thanks for the insight. It does seem odd though, that given this one is the major movie of it's particular time, as the flash was a little while back, and it is front and centre, in the shop window (and a Ridley movie to boot!), that they would have less quality control, not more! The reputation of all concerned, even the studio may hang on whether you go the extra mile on these details... And since they've already spent a couple of hundred million on making the movie in the first place, What's an extra few million, and a little more time to get it right?
It isn't just CGI that has this problem. Computer tech itself is the same way. All this technological advancement, but anymore, video games are just getting more and more "meh". I'm old enough to have had a C64 when I was a kid and an Amiga 500 when I was in my mid teens to early 20s. To this day, people are amazed what they were able to do with such limited resources. Some things were done that still can't be explained how they made it work because, in theory, it's impossible. Fact is, people back then, before tech got huge and rich and lazy....they had to get genuinely creative and exercise genius. They don't have to do that anymore and the quality suffers because of it.
PREACH GIRL! I've had these same feelings since I watched the trailer. A money grab sequel where it was never needed. Add Gladiator to the movies that never needed to continue after they ended (Terminator 2 right up there).
I didn't care much for T2, either. The first was a great sci-fi horror that ended on just the right note: ominus, with the only thing being certain is that mankind would at least make it to the point where would battle it out the machines for his very existence. They ruined that by making the sequel about action, some humor, and the idea that "the future can be changed".
Thanks Michelle for your honest review. I wasn't planning on watching this movie the same as not having watched the Ben Hur remake. IMHO: The creativity in entertainment is almost non existent. For some reason people think they can improve a movie by adding CGI. How much CGI was used in "12 Angry Men"? A good story, interesting characters, good acting and good directing is what is needed and unfortunately that doesn't seem to be happening any more in Hollywood. "Snow White" or "Little Mermaid" anyone? Some remakes make sense, The 1923 "Hunchback of Notre Dame" remade in 1939 as an example added sound and by the way is listed as a romantic drama not horror.
Don't watch both back to back. It will piss you off by how disrespectful the second is. An assortment of garbage. The script is just awful. It lacks any character depth or moving performances like Joaquin Phoenix & Russell Crowe's. Ah right, the score. It's just absent. No soundtrack like Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard here. It leaves you with just hollow and shallow dialogue. It is tiring. Sharks - Why ???
Hello Force of Light entertainers. Michelle I am watching an interview you did with Derek Holem you did a while ago. Was great to learn more about you and the birth of the channel. I didn’t connect the title of your channel with your Christian belief. That was cool to learn. Was thinking an idea would be to ask your subscribers to send in questions for you and Natalie that you all could do a show around. Have a great evening. Cheers
Using the Gladiator name is a quick cash grab, just like Star Wars a couple of years ago. Now that audiences have learned the trick of using nostalgia to market the movie I'm not so sure it will work, which is good because they've been destroying the legacy of great movies for a while now. I didn't watch Matrix 4 and I'm not watching this one either for the same reason. Yesterday I saw Oliver Reed in the first one and the whole cast is just amazing.
Did you burst my bubble for this movie? No, I didn’t have one. I didn’t have a desire to see this movie anyway they didn’t need to make it the first one was a perfect movie. thank you, Michelle for enduring this torture so we don’t have to.
This is hot garbage, I can't believe this was ridley scott, luscius was not maximus' son, I can't even begin to count the flaws with this pile of crap, put it right next to joker 2 in the garbage
I agree, Gladiator II is a pale and poor imitation of the original without the engagement. Pedro Pascal gives the best performance with an honourable mention to Denzel, but isn't granted enough depth in the script. Worth passing entirely if you haven't seen it.
👍🏼❤️ Michelle your voice sounds just fine. 😊 Ridley Scott pocketed the money he saved on CGI ❔🤔 Despite the negatives I still might see this during the holiday weekend for the spectacle of it all and being there are few good choices (not going to see RED ONE 😂) I cannot stand Pedro Pascal since Gina and sick of him getting so many prominent roles. So I hope his underdeveloped character is a minor one
Why is the CGI bad? For the same reason scripts are bad and stories are bad. Talented CGI artists were dumped under DEI and replaced with people who don’t measure up but check off a lot of boxes. All of Hollywood has fallen for the DEI scam and the number of actual talented CGI artists is dwindling.
I agree. tried to make the story too much like the first one but I found it kind of Korny. Especially the end. Looked like they went for some Braveheart moments but failed.
Any movie with a reboot remake or redo has historically "Sucked" a few reasons different director, original cast members refusing. Main reason directors are trying to.emulate the original emotional response , it doesn't work that way with the modern day movie goer.
Well, aren't you all just a happy little bunch here 😅 Just saw it yesterday and I loved it. It was able to stand on it's own two feet and didn't need RC to appear as dream or such. Sorry not sorry! A good movie!
Now I agree with you here about gladiator 2 but I still think you've gone cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs with Wicked. But it appears that the whole world agrees with you on that. The world is Head over heels over Wicked. But there are a few people like me who are part of the black sheep of the family when it comes to that.
I love Gladiator and I wasn't expecting this to come close but this sequel is a real piece of s### and pointless. One of the worse sequels ever made which is saying a lot.
Share your thoughts, subscribe and give the video a 👍🏻! Forgot to rate the movie. It gets a 2/5
I totally agree with you.
Michelle you forgot to mention the sharks... in Coliseum! Hope Steven Spilberg don`t have ideas!
Too generous.
I saw it today and I agree 100 percent they needed to be more creative ,they had too many things simillar to to the first one 😬
Gladiator III: Reloaded
Gladiator IV: The Empire strikes back
Gladiator V: Return of Maximus
Gladiator vs Aliens
Gladiator: Reboot
Gladiator: Remake
Gladiatornado
Some movies should never have sequels. Gladiator is one of them!
Michelle rocking the shades. Much like Joker, Gladiator did not need to sequel. Preach on that CGI, it's so bad these days.
Thanks again, ladies, for taking one for the team.
I hope that all that cinematic abuse doesn't get to you! 🤞🙈

Haha, that 's a pretty good analogy 😂
Oh, God... that was SO cringey!
Wasn't going to see it anyway. Gladiator didn't need a sequel, especially after almost a quarter of a century. In that vein, thanks for going to see it and confirming my thoughts. To quote Animal Mother in Full Metal Jacket, "Better you than me."
I wasn't planning on seeing it unless it received good reviews. Well, now I have more time on my hands. 😆 Thanks for the review Michelle. 👍😎👍
Sit this one out 😂
One of my favorite movies of all time! When I heard they were making a sequel, I knew it would be bad. As another commenter said on another video: I expected nothing yet I am still let down.

Zero sense
In a way, this movie is historically accurate in that the Principate era of Rome ended not terribly long after the reign of Commodus (the emperor in the first one), which brought on the Crisis of the Third Century.
Remakes rarely match the original movie. From limited clips I agree with you. I would give this a 1. You look nice with your glasses 🤓!
There is Sharks? In the colosseum? Oh my lord
Yes 😂
But do they have frikkin laser beams attached to their frikkin heads?!?!
That might actually be one reason to see it.
yeah that was laughable
I thought it was rubbish. Space Monkeys, Sharks in an arena, Denzil chewing up the scenery like Pacino in a toga.
Story could have been written on a postage stamp.
i gather they tried to get away with "eye candy" and could not even get that right, forget story and acting 🤔 THANK YOU Michelle-with-two-Ls for always being a straight-shooter with us 👍☺

I am upset there were no sorts of meta narratives or overarching themes, in the first half of the movie, I was really confused and felt like i had brain damage because the story was so hollow, but then when they started to introduce the plot near the end I was like ahh ok, I guess they were saving it for later..'
Denzel Washington was the only char in this movie I liked
I suggest Ben-Hur (1959), Spartacus (1960) or the Rome TV series (2006-2007).
Spartacus Series also.
Spartacus is great.
reviews are great for this movie. this surprises me. Im checking it out on Monday
I was planning on it but I'll think I'll just catch it when it's on TV.
I knew this movie was in trouble when the trailer started playing rap music as Denzel Washington appeared. 😂
Totally agree! I was let down.

it would be awesome if you wore the same sun glasses, but instead they were in the shape of hearts.
'Are you not entertained?' Yeah from everthing I read or saw regarding this turkey. Was pretty sure no one would be entertained by Gladiator 2. Thanks for the video Michelle!👍
Thanks for watching!
Didn’t like the film however I enjoyed Denzel in this. It is what it is. And that’s about it.
Gladiator 2000 can't be beat. It's ridiculous.
I'm an AMC A=Lister so I get 3 movies to see per week but based on the reviews that I've read and seen, this movie seems to be very 'meh' so I won't waste my time on this movie. Thanks Michelle

I was not excited to see this one. I've only heard bad reviews thus far. I think I may just save my money and not see it. Back then, movies were made with passion. Nowadays, movies are made almost for profit alone.
Ridley Scott isn't putting in the effort anymore. Napoleon last year and Gladiator II this year. Such disappointing!
Both are very bad.
Sounds like a real winner too me 😂😂😂😂

Looking cool with the shades Michelle with two L's.
Thank you!
Gladiator is a classic, but the sequel should have never been made.
💯
Don't sugarcoat it, tell us how you really feel
Once they tried to say he was Maximus' son, I was done. This movie should've never been made. It is a deplorable disgrace to the first one.

No lie, I give it 5, but it was too fast pace
Michelle thanks for the review and cgi points on the special effects being so bad! I won’t be wasting my money on this movie!
Save your money!
you probably wish you didn’t watch the first one before that one 😂
💯😂
Your review has discouraged me from seeing it, you are right Gladiator is a better movie.

Thanks, you too!
Saw the original in the theater epic! I’ll wait till this comes out on tubi or something, thanks Michelle !
CGI is a victim of modern art. Artists no longer concentrate on realism & design.
Great honest review. Thank you
Thanks!
I didn’t like the sequel
Great review 😊
I'm not planning on seeing Gladiator 2. They shouldn't have bothered making this movie. It won't hold up to the original.
It doesn’t touch the original
Exactly! They need to stop making sequels 25 plus years later.
The original gladiator was heavily criticized for its CGI however it sounds like a step down in quality as a movie
My usual tell of a movie, if they play scenes, even if animated from the prior, much better movie. When that happened here I was like.... "oh no...."
Too woke for me. They needed to keep it simple.
The original is the best!! 👍Gladiator 2 really does suck 👎Watch the original again!!!
I saw it and wasn't impressed. Meh
The CGI sharks and Monkeys were just horrendous!....Its one thing to flood the Colosseum, but sharks? lol
I'm not interested in this film because of Pedro Pascal. I really cannot stand him.
I’m not the biggest fan of his but I will give credit when it’s due.
He exited the film too soon.
Awesome review that’s looks awful
Thanks! Not planning on seeing it Michelle.
The screen writer David Scarpa is a middle aged cis white dude so what are you even talking about?
I agree. tried to make the story too much like the first one but I found it kind of Korny. Especially the end. Looked like they went for some Braveheart moments but failed.
Gladiator is one of my top ten favorite movies. Yeah, I didn’t think it looked very good. I really am not a fan of CGI.
Thanks for saving me the time and money. I loved the original Gladiator and am not surprised that excellence was not repeated.
Glad you enjoyed it! We can agree to disagree:)
I am skipping this and Wicked, despite how you felt about it, neither of these appeal to me.
Great review! I don't care to see it!
Thanks!
You're welcome!
Just the production stills made it looks like some sort of AI generated fanfic
@@jdg9999 it really did at times
looks friggin' terrible

You know a movie is bad when you struggle to find any positives to say about it, but that's about what I expected with this non-sequel.
The screenplay is sooo bad.
Hard to find great screenwriter in Hollywood now. They replaced by mediocre screenwriter due to dei stuff 😊
I love Gladiator and I wasn't expecting this to come close but this sequel is a real piece of s### and pointless. One of the worse sequels ever made which is saying a lot.
Saying it kinda suck is being too kind, it is trash! I had to go watch Wicked to wash of my disappointment!
Same!
it woke sucks.... and denzel is on the diddy list
