I have been a fan of American Steel since 1997, when I came across their music on a comp that was lying around a West Oakland studio called "Burnt Ramen" where I was recording with my band at the time. American Steel's music affected me like none other before and I became obsessed with the band. Over the past few years, my obsession has chilled out quite a bit, but I can't deny that I've been more like a ridiculous fanboy for this group than for any other. Perhaps it's because of the time in my life it represents and how the music and its lyrics shaped me and my development in some way.
Over the years I've documented American Steel sporadically. The first video I ever uploaded to RUclips was an old Hi8 video tape I found from their 1999 record release show for "Rogue's March." When they reunited with the original lineup with Scott Healy back behind the drum kit in 2007, I documented an early show at The Bottom of the Hill and some of their tour with the Lawrence Arms as well.
When I was told they were going to play the entire "Rogue's March" album from start to finish (something I've never heard of them doing ever before) in a small venue in San Francisco, I was excited about the concept but doubted my ability to attend the event considering I've lived in NYC for the past 10 years. However, I was the guy that flew out for their final show at Gilman in 2002 before their first breakup, so nothing was really off the table. But I thought perhaps I wasn't the fanboy I once was.
As luck would have it, my work had brought me to Los Angeles for a shoot during the same week as this show. I had forgotten about it until a friend jokingly mentioned that I would probably show up anyway. I ended up having a couple days off so on a whim I bought a flight up to San Francisco to catch the show. I'm so glad that I did.
I didn't have the tools I needed to document this properly (I wasn't initially planning on filming at all so I had the wrong camera, wrong lens, etc.), but I did my best with what I had. It was like 1999 all over again, and that was the best year of my life. Lots of good people, lots of good music, lots of fun. I thought it would be worth sharing. Enjoy!
