As an owner, lover, and current wearer of the HD700s, they attempt to kill you right out of the box. But if you EQ away that treble peak (current setting is -9db @ 6050hz, 12Q), they start to turn into something magical. Boost the bass, apply a slight scoop centered around 450hz from 200-1000, a slight bump between 2k and 3k, and my god. Direct comparisons to the 600s and Sundaras result in me almost never using anything other than the 700s. Until these, there was a certain magic that Grados have that nothing else in my collection could match - but the 700? Somehow it does it.
Admittedly this tuning is along with Dekoni Hybrid pads, so it might not work for you. But these babies are worth the effort. Kilobuck performance for $300. My next potential sleeper I'm chasing is the Denon AH-D5200, which can fall as low as $200-300 these days, so here's hoping the 700s get a closed back buddy out of them.

It has the soundstaging and detail of hd800 and the warmth and focal focus of hd600. The shrill in highs is easily eliminated by tubes and it's one of the very best when used with OTL amp. Even Sennheiser forgot it and pretends the HD700 doesn't exist. I've owned a HD700 for 10 years and still enjoy using them. Super comfortable, amazing soundstage, imaging, and details. Perfect for movies/TV shows, gaming, classic rock, and classical music.
It only needed a slight boost to bass and a slight decrease to its 6-7K region. A slight EQ helps tremendously but I replaced the stock cable with a nice copper cable, the flaked out, rotted headbands, and the worn out, flaking earpads to make it sound and feel like a new headphone. Tube amp also helps smooth it out.
Wish Senn came out with an updated version of this headphone. I also own the HD660S2 and it'd be nice to see a HD700S2.

Most kilobuck headphones weigh over 400g, so even though my ears love their sound my weak neck does not allow me to wear then for over an hour without my neck getting cramped. Weight is a crucial factor in wearing comfort, and not enough companies are paying attention to their headphone designs in that respect.

I think so many back in the day and now completely don't know what these great headphones were about. The fact is like many phones they are greatly affected by the dac/amp you use to drive them. A good tube amp will make them sing. But most importantly you get out what you put in. If you have a really good source recording they will sound great, conversely crap in crap out. I've had mine for years and love them, but to each his own, if every headphone sounded the same to everyone you would only have one.

Not that hard to find. That price was high for a perfect condition one. I was told it wasn't a Grell creation, but more of a bunch in a room making up a headphone, designed by committee. It was one of my first headphones with a WooWa7 original tube amp and the pairing was just amazing. I's I was someone who would alway crank the treble all the way on any car or basic home stereo before getting into Heapdhones. The treble is there, my brain adapts after a few songs, the bass is nice and punchy, detailed, hugely wide soundstage. Ultimately the treble on the HD800 original, even with SDR bugged me enough to sell it and keep the 700. The design and fit are as close to perfect as possible. They just disappear on the head. Then I discovered Sonarworks Reference 4 at the time, which makes and applies an EQ profile based on average measurments and correct them to Harmon, would even compensate for age related treble loss. With that, no initial brain burn is was needed. They were just fantastic headphones. Nearly everything else is far more expensive but when I still use them I love them! As happy as they were on a $500 DAC amp initially, on a $10k system including tube cost, they also scale really well. Even if they ditched the model, that chassic and design should have remained. For me the lessen here is to ignore it when it seems everyone dismisses a product and hear it for yourself. I get the criticism of it. Still love it. The 800 spike is far worse for my ears. Don't miss it at all.

Building a setup for 700 is all about keeping that treble peak in control.
I use it with chord mojo + burson soloist sl mk ii. Feed it with less resolving sources like iphone with apple music and it should be good. Sounds great.

Once you are purposefully feeding it with less resolving sources to work around issues, I think you're better off just getting a cheaper+better pair of headphones.

@@Teuntjuhh why new hps? It sounds great with this setup. You wont get this soundstage or naturalness with lesser hps.

IMO the only thing HD700 was lacking is clarity/resolution, and tighter bass response. The tuning is similar to Focal headphones but with bigger soundstage, ear bleeding treble, and of course a "muddier" sound. Similar to the HD800 SDR mod, the modhouse mod softens the peak and improves bass response slightly. Forget to mention how well these take to tube amps*
The criticism was unwarranted especially by people who didn't even actually own a pair of these headphones at the time smh.

Audio Sanctuary and Amazon have replacements. Audio Sanctuary is OEM, Amazon is third party. I swapped it out in mine and it was pretty easy.
