    Im 25 and sadly report that I have never has a credit card it always scared me that it would ruin my life. I'm the first in my family to go to college and be able to financially literate and with no one in my family to turn to, your channel has really helped me figure out the credit card game so thank you for all that you do and I hope your channel grows! (:

      I completely understand the hesitation with credit cards, especially if you don't have a background in financial education. Unfortunately, that's the truth for most of us! I wish they did a much better job of teaching this in school, but that is a big reason I wanted to start my channel in the first place. The beauty of credit cards is that once you begin to understand their power if used responsibly, they can help get you toward your financial dreams! I really appreciate the kind words and I'm glad my videos have been helpful. Please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions. I love to chat about this stuff, so it's never a burden!

    Great video Spencer. Your channel rocks!
    The Amex Gold Card and Chase Sapphire Preferred are on my "financial goals" list for 2023. What's your thoughts on the gold card after owning it for 6 months? I Right now, Amex is offering 190,000 bonus points for the gold card. I applied last night and was approved, but I didn't accept the offer yet. The only reason I didn't accept is because I really want that Chase Sapphire Preferred, and I'm on "5/24" probation until November of this year. So I'm on the fence on if I should hold out until November and get the Sapphire Preferred, or if I should accept the current gold card offer because of how many bonus points they are currently offering. In your opinion, does either one of these cards hold a "perks advantage" over the other?

    • @SpencerJohnsonOfficial
      @SpencerJohnsonOfficial  Год назад

      Thank you Jason, that means a lot! Honestly, I should make a video about my review of the Amex Gold after 6 months. For a short summary though, I think it's a no-brainer card if you're gonna use the credits. It has given me a ton of value for all my food purchases and while it doesn't always get accepted overseas, in the US, it's super solid. Also did you mean to say you're being offered 90k points instead of 190k? I've never heard of an offer like that before, but 90k is more what I'm used to haha. As for which one I would get first between the Gold and CSP, it depends on what other cards you have. If you have a ton of Chase points stocked up that you want to transfer out to travel partners, it makes a lot of sense to wait out the 5/24 rule until November where you could hopefully snag an elevated offer. But if you don't have any other Chase cards and will still be under 5/24 fairly soon after November even after adding the Gold card, then I'd probably add the Gold now. Like I said, it depends on your current setup and the goals you have with your cards over the next year or so. Hopefully that kind of helps though!

    • @jasonmccann257
      @jasonmccann257 Год назад

      @Spencer Johnson I messed up, I meant 90,000 MR points. I got them mixed up with the 150,000 MR points they are offering for the platinum card. I currently don't have any Chase cards in my wallet, and if I end up taking the plunge on the Gold Card, then I'll on the "5/24" until April 2024.

    • @SpencerJohnsonOfficial
      @SpencerJohnsonOfficial  Год назад +1

      @@jasonmccann257 I gotcha, that makes a lot more sense haha. I guess my one thing I'd tell you to consider is if you're okay with not getting Chase cards until 2024. If the answer to that is no, I would add a Chase card right now and then get the Gold card. That's up to you though!

    • @jasonmccann257

      @SpencerJohnsonOfficial  Год назад +1

      @@jasonmccann257 That's awesome to hear! Congrats on locking in such a good offer. I would definitely advise to get your card setup with the two credits the card offers. You do have to activate both of them to a degree, so make sure you do that when the card comes in. Other than that, just use the card for all your food purchases and you're pretty set! The other perks and benefits are of good use too, but if you do what I just mentioned, you got 90% of it covered I'd say.

  • @project_zellaz33
    @project_zellaz33 2 года назад +1

    If you don’t mind me asking what was ur credit age looking like when you applied for this card? I am just curious do these banks worry so much on age being high, I mean considering that people like me and u getting in to the game/wanting new cards as we progress it will of course cause it to go down/low. I mean the rule of thumb for me is 3 to 6 months between applications or when ever my score regains the point it lost from the previous application & after bonus is completed as well.

    • @SpencerJohnsonOfficial
      @SpencerJohnsonOfficial  2 года назад +2

      My average age of accounts was at about 9 months when I applied for this card I believe and now it is at 7 months. I have never had an issue with my average age of accounts being so low, and have been auto approved for all the cards I’ve applied for! Luckily, the average age only accounts for 10% of your credit score, so as long as you have the main categories in check (payment history and credit utilization in particular) then your score will still be high enough to get approved for most every card out there. Just like you said, being new to the credit game and accumulating cards is going to keep that average age low, but as long as the lenders see that you’re using your cards responsibly, they’re going to want to lend you cards! I space my card applications out usually about 3 months, but for this card I applied within 2 months because I wanted that welcome bonus and it all worked out fine! The main thing to keep in mind is your 5/24 status. I’ll be gardening my 5/24 status for the next few months, so we’ll see how my score changes while my average age of accounts grows. In the end, I wouldn’t worry too much about your average age of accounts while you’re in the accumulating phase as your score should still be high enough to get approved for almost every card even without a high average age. Once we’ve been in the game longer, that number will be higher which will lead to our scores being even higher (800+), but until then, scores in the “very good” range (740-799) should do just fine!

      @SpencerJohnsonOfficial  2 года назад

      Great question! I can’t tell you for sure whether you’d be approved or not, but it sounds like you’d be able to. Having excellent credit is always a good thing so that’ll help your odds. I’ve heard there is a way to check if you’re pre-approved on Amex’s website before you do the full application, so if you can do that, that’s what I would try!

  • @jonathanle20
    @jonathanle20 2 года назад +1

    personally I don’t travel right now (still in school) but the rewards sound awesome, I just don’t know if I should stack the points until I can redeem them for 1 cent per point via transfer partners. Right now the most I could get out of it is 0.7 cent per point which would render it 2.8% or below other 3% back cards, what do you think? Should I wait until the AmEx Charles Schwab is a good fit for me and transfer all of it into a brokerage account?

    • @SpencerJohnsonOfficial
      @SpencerJohnsonOfficial  2 года назад +2

      I completely understand! Personally I try to get at least 1cpp on all of my redemptions, so unless you’re tight for money right now and need the statement credit, I would keep stacking points until you travel more! There are a ton of great no annual fee cards that get you 3% back on dining like the Citi Custom Cash or Chase Freedom cards which I’ve made videos on. I have the same idea as you and will likely only use my Amex points to transfer to travel partners and try to get at least 2cpp for now, and eventually I will probably get the Charles Schwab Platinum card to invest some of my rewards at 1.1cpp down the line.
      I hope that helps! Let me know if you have any more questions!

      No problem! I think points can definitely be used differently depending on the season of life you’re in, but looking at it from strictly a value perspective, transferring out generally gives the best point valuations. There’s nothing wrong with redeeming them for less though if that fits your current goals!! That’s something I’ve learned over time… it’s easy to get wrapped up in the credit card points game and feel bad about redeeming for less than max value, but you shouldn’t feel bad about that as long as you’re redeeming in a way that meets your goals.

    Great video! I really want to apply for the Gold Card. I have a great credit score and I have no derogatory marks on my account but I’m a student with a limited income so I’m not sure they’ll approve me. I currently have the Discover Student Card and the. Bank Of America Cash rewards card but I’m looking for another card to apply for. Any suggestions as someone who also just graduated from college?

    • @SpencerJohnsonOfficial
      @SpencerJohnsonOfficial  2 года назад +2

      Thank you Mason! The gold card is really an excellent card and I’m excited to have it in my wallet. If you don’t believe you have the income for it just yet, there are a bunch of really great cards you can get in the meantime! However, I would look online to see if you can find any data points of people who have been approved for the Gold card because I know Amex really likes people to get their cards, so you may actually have a good chance of being approved. Just make sure you can afford the annual fee and such first though. But if you wanna hold off on the Gold card, my first recommendation would probably be to get started in Chase’s ecosystem with one of the Freedom cards. I personally have the freedom unlimited and have really enjoyed it, but if you like rotating categories then the flex might be for you. I’m actually posting a video Sunday comparing the two freedom cards, so keep an eye out for that! Another great card to look into is the Citi Custom Cash. It’s a really good card that earns 5% in your top spending category (up to $500 a month) and can be used very flexibly to give you 5% in a category if your choosing each month. It’s really nice to be able to guarantee yourself 5% in a category that your other cards don’t earn very strongly in.
      One thing I do want to mention is to keep in mind your 5/24 status with Chase. That’s a big reason why it’s so good to get started with Chase earlier rather than later because once you get 5 personal cards in 24 months, you’ll be automatically denied for another one of their cards until it’s been 2 years since you got the oldest card. If you don’t care about that though, you have a ton of options you can go with on the market, but the Chase Freedom Flex, Chase Freedom Unlimited, and Citi Custom Cash are some I would start researching if you want to hold off on the Gold card application and want a solid no annual fee card that you can keep in your wallet forever.
      I hope that helps!! Let me know if you have any more questions or if you want some different recommendations as well.

      That is correct. There is a tool on their website that allows you to check to see how high of a charge will go through on your card so that can give you an idea of a pseudo credit limit, but they do not have hard set limits since you have to pay it in full every month.

    • @SpencerJohnsonOfficial
      @SpencerJohnsonOfficial  2 года назад +1

      Nice! I have the same setup as well. I currently have the OG Chase Freedom, Chase Freedom Unlimited, Chase Sapphire Preferred, Citi Custom Cash, and the Amex Gold card. For me, I mainly use the Unlimited as my catch-all card for the “everything else” category of spending, the OG Freedom for rotating categories, Chase Sapphire preferred strictly for being able to transfer to travel partners and for its no foreign transaction fees as a Visa card, the Citi Custom Cash for gas, and the Amex gold for all food purchases and flight purchases. You can definitely use them in a powerful combination! You would just need to make sure that you can take advantage of the Amex gold credits because if not, then it won’t be worth the annual fee. I use my credits every month meaning that the Amex gold only has a $10 effective annual fee and I profit by using it for my food categories. If you do get the Amex gold and presumably use it overseas because of its no foreign transaction fees, make sure you bring the preferred with you as well because some places don’t take Amex! That’s another good way to use those cards in a combo. I hope that helps!

      Great question mats. I’m not sure what I would consider a “high salary” for the Amex gold card, but Amex does not have any specific requirements for income. The main thing they look at outside of your credit report is going to be your debt to income ratio, so as long as you make more than you spend, you would have a decent shot at getting this card. I would say having the median salary in the US is plenty to get this card, but you always wanna keep in mind the annual fee that comes on it and make sure you can get value on the card beforehand. If it helps you, I applied with 70k as my income and was obviously approved for the card, and I think that’s plenty high! I hope that helps you out a bit!!

    Is there a reason you chose the gold and not the platinum?

    • @SpencerJohnsonOfficial
      @SpencerJohnsonOfficial  2 года назад +1

      There are a few reasons for that. For starters, the Gold earns rewards in more categories that I spend in and has credits in those areas as well (food categories). With those credits, I am able to justify the annual fee on the Gold card and it comes out to be effectively $10 a year for me to have the card. The Amex Platinum is not a card that people use on a daily basis because it really only earns rewards in travel categories. Since it’s a travel card and I am not traveling too much just yet, I wouldn’t be taking advantage of many of the credits the card comes with, and it wouldn’t be earning points in the categories I spend the most in, so I could not justify a $695 annual fee. At the end of the day, the Gold card provides a ton of value for me in categories I spend in every single day while the Platinum does not. They are both great cards but serve very different purposes. Once I’m traveling more and want to get a luxury travel card, the Platinum will be one i consider, but until then, I am very happy to have the Gold card that will give me great value on daily spend. I hope that makes sense!

      The longer the credit history the better, so it’ll play a role for sure. Did you get a chance to try out that pre approval tool on Amex’s website? They won’t do a hard pull for that tool and it’ll let you know if you’d be approved or not before you even apply.

    I didn’t instantly get approved… help! Currently in the military with a low salary of around $30k but within a month I’m getting married and that number will jump to over $58k and I didn’t know you could project income, my credit score is 742 on Experian and Transunion and 727 Equifax. Have 4 total accounts, 2 of which are closed and 2 hard inquiries on record. Credit history is 1 year 7 months… do I even have a chance?…

      Don’t worry! You can always call Amex’s reconsideration line and explain yourself there. They are more than accommodating from what I’ve hear. You can let them know exactly what you said about the income and I’m sure that’ll help your odds, but your data points are great overall! You shouldn’t have an issue of being approved. Plus since you’re active military, you can get your annual fee waived which is great! Thank you for your service sir. Let me know how the call with their reconsideration line goes!

      @@wheelockmedia6240 Well at least you got a response and hopefully that info will be enough to get you approved! I would still consider calling their recon line though if you want to get in front of a real person. That could change the tides if anything. Thanks for the update!

    Me looking at my significantly better cap1 savor card knowing I'll never be cool enough to allow myself to pay $250 for the prestige of carrying a card that relies on its reputation rather than being competitive

    • @SpencerJohnsonOfficial
      @SpencerJohnsonOfficial  Год назад +1

      I respect that opinion! I’d say the $95 Savor card is much harder to get positive value from than the Gold card, but the Savor One card is really solid with no annual fee. The main difference between the two is the point valuation you assign to each ecosystem. It all depends on what you prefer.

      Congrats on the new card! Resy.com should still have a 75k offer + 20% back at restaurants for the first year (up to $250 back). Or you can maybe find higher referrals out there (90k or so). Amex cards always have so many offers on them, so it’s important you do your research!!
