When Josh said that it's Amputee Awareness Month, the first thought that popped into my head was "Wouldn't most amputees be aware that they are amputees?" And then I felt shame.
I'm so glad Josh was on here! Too many people see people that are amputees in a negative light and they need to be treated just the same as everyone, they're just don't have one of the parts of your body. I'm really glad Mental Floss did this!
Also, Hall of Fame baseball player Mordecai Brown pitched from 1903 to 1916 after losing parts of two fingers on his right hand. Not only did he pitch for 14 seasons with missing fingers on his pitching hand, it helped his game, as the missing finger helped the movement on his curveball.
Don't forget to mention Django Reinhardt! The famous guitarist and composer didn't lose his fingers but "After his third and fourth fingers were paralyzed when he suffered burns in a fire, Reinhardt used only the index and middle fingers of his left hand on his solos and invented an entirely new style of jazz guitar technique", to quote Wiki.
You forgot Django Reinhardt, legendary jazz guitarist who was missing both his ring and pinky fingers but still made history as the first shredder on guitar. Up until him guitar was an accompanying instrument. He was Tonny Iommi's inspiration to continue playing after his accident.
They missed a good opportunity to mention Tom Dempsey, the New Orleans Saints kicker who originally set the NFL record for longest field goal at 63 yards. He was born without his right hand and half his foot. The only reason that the record was beaten is because Orlindo Mare kicked his record field goal in Denver, where the air is thinner and the ball can fly farther with the same effort.
They should have mentioned Gen. Daniel Sickles. He lost his leg at the battle of Gettysburg, and it is now displayed in a case in a museum. He even visited his own leg every so often.
Walter Emmanuel Jones, who portrayed Zack, the first Black Ranger on Power Rangers, is also missing a middle finger due to an accident when he was four.
How did Adam Hills not make this list? He has to be the most popular comedian with one foot! He even makes jokes about he artificial right foot! Come on, Mental Floss pick up you game!
Tony Iommi is just missing the tips if two fingers. He made caps and then down-tuned his guitar so he wouldn't have to switch hands. Some say that's when heavy metal was born.
James Doohan was my uncle's commanding officer on D-Day, and my uncle was with him when he lost his finger. He (my uncle, obviously) then died three days later from wounds suffered in the battle.
***** Say that to the asteroid belt. Would you like to offer your two cents on the vehicle design? If someone were to undertake this endeavor, do you think they would just drop the fingers into the airlock and Whoosh!? Maybe you would, but I have imagination. I'm thinking a small modular ship (to be added to later) with ion propulsion for orbit adjustments.
They're gonna need to have an "Amputee awareness month awareness month." I'm well aware there are amputees, but I wasn't aware there was a month to help me remain aware.
what about Adam Hills!? he literally hosts a show called 'the last leg'! which started as a way to cover the Paralypics! and he did and interview with Hank Green! how could you possibly miss him?
Really good to see you on this channel. You left out the very famous Larry Chloupek from your list - if the Washington Post had a feature article on him after his achievement in Boston he must be worthy. :-)
You missed Adam Hills the Australian comedian who hosts a show in Australia that Hank appeared on :) He unfortunately lost his leg at birth and for a time had his prothetic leg painted so it looked like the terminators leg so he could act out the scene from the movie where the T1000's leg detaches as its walking across the frozen floor :)
The meat slicer one I was like "Hey that's like my uncle!!" When my uncle was 5 he was helping his mom in the kitchen, by grounding the beef. He was pushing the meat down with his index, middle and ring fingers while cranking the machine to ground the beef. Unfortunately his fingers got caught in the blade, and had to be amputated. (The guy is in his late 50s, so this was a long time ago) so he's since had only his pinky and thumb on his right hand. Didn't stop him from becoming a great magician and starting a business though :)
Much love to a lesser known amputee from WWII, RAF Ace pilot and Group Captain, Sir Douglas Bader. He lost his legs in an dare of piloting skill in which he crashed in 1931. He was not knighted for his actions in WWII, but instead for his services to the disabled.
Josh, did you intentionally button your shirt like that? It was so hard for me to actually listen to what you were talking about when I was so distracted by trying to figure out what's wrong with your shirt :) I had to watch the video again!
I read in a medical text that your nails grow based on the length of bone there is between the tip of the digit and the proximal joint. There is less space between the tip of your toe phalanges and those proximal joints than there is between the tip of your finger phalanges and their proximal joints. Therefore, your fingernails grow faster.
You seem to have forgotten to mention that Jackson didn't live very long without his arm, He died of pneumonia and infection eight days after losing his arm.
Question: when tuning a radio, there's a lot of dead space between stations that actually broadcast stuff. If I had powerful enough equipment, am I allowed to broadcast on those empty frequencies? Or does someone own radio waves?
I can't make myself taller with prosthetic legs, but one of the top questions I get when I tell people I have a prosthetic eye is ''do you have a few in different colors?'' Saving up for a bejeweled, Christmas themed one as I type.
What about what has to be surely the most famous person in relation to loosing body parts, Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson? He lost his eye, then part of an ear, then his arm... though still went from Junior Officer, to become Admiral of the White (second highest rank in the British Navy behind Fleet Admiral). Admittedly, ended up then loosing two vertebrae to a bullet... and dying... but be it through stupidity arrogance or courage.. he's still got to be the poster boy for over achieving despite missing body parts!
I'm so used to seeing John Green talk incredibly fast on this channel that it's weird to hear someone who talks at a normal speed. I kinda want to speed up the video.
"Stonewall" Jackson's first (and most commonly used) name was Thomas. His middle name was Johnathan but he was commonly called Tom by those who knew him best.
What about Harold Russell, the only person to win 2 Oscars at the same ceremony (they gave him one early because they didn't think he'd win for best supporting actor, but he did)? He lost both of his hands, and played a handless war veteran in The Best Years of our Lives.
2:50 "The drummer from Def Leppard's only got one arm. The drummer from Def Leppard's only got one arm. The drummer from Def Leppard's only got one arm."

Gary Burghoff has a congenital deformity of three fingers on his left hand. He concealed this while playing Charlie Brown in "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown" by wearing a baseball glove and in M.A.S.H. as "Radar" O'Reilly (in both the movie and TV series) by holding a clipboard.

"If I had lost both my legs, I'd make myself at least a foot taller." Wouldn't you make it two feet taller? I, I'll see myself out...
I see what you did there!
Thats because your eyes haven't been amput- I really shouldn't become a comedian...
no, but you might be able to have a successful RUclips channel.
Chipish 10 feet taller bro.
(the joke is that you need at least two feet to stand on)
When Josh said that it's Amputee Awareness Month, the first thought that popped into my head was "Wouldn't most amputees be aware that they are amputees?"
And then I felt shame.
Not gonna lie. I found that hilarious.
I'm so glad Josh was on here! Too many people see people that are amputees in a negative light and they need to be treated just the same as everyone, they're just don't have one of the parts of your body. I'm really glad Mental Floss did this!

Josh did a great job at hosting this episode

Y'all missed a great chance to talk about how Stonewall Jackson has two graves: on for the arm he lost and one for the rest of him.
that's so cool! Kind of makes me want to cut off a few of my limbs so i can cover more space with good old dead me :D
They should have mentioned Gen. Daniel Sickles. He lost his leg at the battle of Gettysburg, and it is now displayed in a case in a museum. He even visited his own leg every so often.
That's so weird! Imagine looking at a part of yourself in a museum. So weird but fascinating
Josh is so great. Also, when he said Galileo's fingers now orbited the sun together, I briefly thought he meant they were shot up into space lol
Yay Josh! I'm so glad you were the guest on Mental Floss! You're awesome! We should hang out sometime!
Stonewall Jackson's first name was Thomas but props for getting his middle name right
This is, by far, my favorite Mental Floss video. Go Joshua!
Great job, Josh! Thank you for an awesome video!
I have been waiting for this for like a month now! Totally made my day!
What about Luke Skywalker? He may have lived a long time ago and was from a galaxy far, far away. Yet I still think he deserves some recognition
Josh needs to host MentalFloss (when John can't) more often, this was awesome.
Josh Sundquist is hosting Mental Floss for an episode.
This is the greatest day of my life.
As a Canadian, I feel like Terry Fox should be on this list. But pretty awesome either way \m/
I was thinking the same thing
Lol... Canada
Galileo's mummified middle finger points towards the Vatican.
Where does the $ sign come from
Its rumoured the it came from that it was just USD, the U moved into the S forming $ and the D (Ha ha) was droped.
the Spanish staff and scroll if I'm not mistaken
I saw the title of this video and thought "If Josh Sundquist isn't hosting this, I'll be disappointed". I wasn't disappointed, thanks mental floss!
Walter Emmanuel Jones, who portrayed Zack, the first Black Ranger on Power Rangers, is also missing a middle finger due to an accident when he was four.
He is really good at hosting. Speed, emphasis, body language. I like him a lot.
what about Tycho Brahe the astronomer, He lost his nose sword duel at 20, and worn a replacement made of silver for the rest of his life.
How did Adam Hills not make this list? He has to be the most popular comedian with one foot! He even makes jokes about he artificial right foot! Come on, Mental Floss pick up you game!
Mental Floss is very US-centric, it seems. Much more so than its followers, which should make them think.
I just commented that too :) Hank even appeared on Adam Hills Tonight ...
... I apologise for the video's title by the way lol
+RUclipsHaley you mean about the title referring to 18 when the counter only goes up to 17?
Wow-was expecting to be disappointed by a different host, but that guy was pretty cool & easy to listen to. Good episode!
Tony Iommi is just missing the tips if two fingers. He made caps and then down-tuned his guitar so he wouldn't have to switch hands. Some say that's when heavy metal was born.
He cut the tops off washing up bottles and melted them onto his fingers so he could carry on playing. Serious metal!
Josh Sundquist on Mental Floss?? Best video ever!
Hi Allison! Thanks! :)
Ahh, hi Josh! Anytime! :D
What a thoroughly pleasant surprise! Joshhhh powerrrrr!
Great video guy. Love this series!!
James Doohan was my uncle's commanding officer on D-Day, and my uncle was with him when he lost his finger. He (my uncle, obviously) then died three days later from wounds suffered in the battle.
1:06 Oh my god he made a Vincent and the Doctor reference XDD That's my favorite episode~
JOSHUAAAA i was the one who asked on twitter the other day! i had a suspicion it would be this week!
"only 5'8""
welp, back to feeling terrible about being short
If I'm ever super rich I'm going to buy Galileo's fingers and launch them into orbit around the sun.
Well technically, they are already in orbit around the sun. ;)
Yes, but It would be more poetic if they were in the Sun's sphere of influence instead of rotating around the Earth.
You're right.
It's not obvious. Every thing from Mercury to The Oort Cloud is orbiting the Sun. Personally, I'd put them between Earth and Venus.
***** Say that to the asteroid belt. Would you like to offer your two cents on the vehicle design? If someone were to undertake this endeavor, do you think they would just drop the fingers into the airlock and Whoosh!? Maybe you would, but I have imagination. They're gonna need to have an "Amputee awareness month awareness month." I'm well aware there are amputees, but I wasn't aware there was a month to help me remain aware.
Guys, they didn't count wrong, they just amputated #18.
what about Django Reinhardt, he made kind of a good deal of music missing fingers :D
Haha great Dr. Who reference! Good episode. :)
when i read the title i thought "i hope josh is on that list!!" so i was pretty happy seeing him be the host
You almost made me cry when you mentioned how the Doctor couldn't save him. At least he tried! And Amy gave him something to love! :'(
what about Adam Hills!? he literally hosts a show called 'the last leg'! which started as a way to cover the Paralypics! and he did and interview with Hank Green! how could you possibly miss him?
Yay I love Josh! Great video :)
Really good to see you on this channel. You left out the very famous Larry Chloupek from your list - if the Washington Post had a feature article on him after his achievement in Boston he must be worthy. :-)
You know what...I LOVED the Dr. Who - Vincent VanGogh episode. In my opinion, one of the best.
I was thinking the same thing, but it is an American show so they have probably never heard of his brilliance
Well Hank definitely has he was on Adam Hills Tonight ... don't know if you saw that episode but yeah Adam actually interviewed him.
"the drummer from def leppard only has one arm!" bloodhound gang
The meat slicer one I was like "Hey that's like my uncle!!" When my uncle was 5 he was helping his mom in the kitchen, by grounding the beef. Haven't even finished watching the intro... But I am so sure that I'm going to like it because of josh I have already hit that like button!!!!
Also Australian comedian Adam Hills was born with one and a half legs.
(He is awesome.)
I was about to comment about Adam Hills as well and then saw that you already had. TeamAustralia!
*Hills
But yeah, he's great.
you beat me to it mate! adam hills is awesome!
***** Oh!
Thanks for pointing it out.
(* This comment is NOT sarcastic)
Thanks for not getting mad... :-)

He was not knighted for his actions in WWII, but instead for his services to the disabled.
Only 18? I've learned to expect more from you, Mental Floss.
I think it was because John didn't want to miss out on a good episode.
I like Josh a lot. Nobody can be John, but he did a great job here-I'd be happy to see him speak again.
Yay, Josh Sundquist! :D
Josh, did you intentionally button your shirt like that? It was so hard for me to actually listen to what you were talking about when I was so distracted by trying to figure out what's wrong with your shirt :) I had to watch the video again!
this is awesome well done!
Adam Hills, Australian comedian, born without his right foot.
When I saw Josh "hop" in, I sort of freaked out. Well done Josh! :-)
Josh made a Doctor Who reference...he totally didn't forget to be awesome in this video!
I was like "I wonder if they'll mention Josh" and theN OH DEAR JOSH SUNDQUIST I SCREAMED
I read in a medical text that your nails grow based on the length of bone there is between the tip of the digit and the proximal joint. There is less space between the tip of your toe phalanges and those proximal joints than there is between the tip of your finger phalanges and their proximal joints. Oh my gosh I love Josh Sundquist!
Vincent Van only cut his ear _lobe_ off.
nice video Josh!
I literally thought as i clicked on this video "hey i wonder if Josh Sundquist will be in this"
this is the first mentalfloss video without john that i actually liked
You seem to have forgotten to mention that Jackson didn't live very long without his arm, He died of pneumonia and infection eight days after losing his arm.
I thought the exact same thing .
lonesomepoetxi Yeah I did too... However, I suppose if you live long enough to give your amputated limb a proper burial....
Question: when tuning a radio, there's a lot of dead space between stations that actually broadcast stuff. If I had powerful enough equipment, am I allowed to broadcast on those empty frequencies? Or does someone own radio waves?
He only listed 17 people! Is Josh number 18? Haha
Josh!
I didn't think i'd ever see you here...
I can't make myself taller with prosthetic legs, but one of the top questions I get when I tell people I have a prosthetic eye is ''do you have a few in different colors?'' Saving up for a bejeweled, Christmas themed one as I type.
Wait, so who was the eighteenth famous person?
...GG, MentalFloss.
I'm going to say it's Josh himself.
they put the two guitarists under the same number.
ChaosWolf1982 no, they're 12 and 13
Mathew Gibbons I got it eventually.
Josh said above that they were originally going to have Oscar Pistorius, but decided not to.
Please let josh do more lists!
What about what has to be surely the most famous person in relation to loosing body parts, Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson? ...Did you dress up as the lamp from A Christmas Story? That's amazing.
I would have been sorely disappointed had you not included James Doohan. I should know better than to doubt the nerdiness of you guys!
HOLD ON A MINUTE!! How did it go from episode 53 to 202? Did I miss something?
Season 2, episode 2?
I hate to be the one to tell you this but you've been in a coma for quite some time
One of my favorite episodes of Doctor Who
I was surprised to see josh here! I'm reading his book right now
His hair is so controled in this. :) Ily Josh!!
i love josh sundquist. so much.
Josh was awesome as a presenter
Former president of Brazil has a missing finger
"Stonewall" Jackson's first (and most commonly used) name was Thomas. His middle name was Johnathan but he was commonly called Tom by those who knew him best.
Mind blowing question: What state of matter is fire?
It's not a state of matter as so much as that it's an event that takes place. It's really just a reaction.
What about Harold Russell, the only person to win 2 Oscars at the same ceremony (they gave him one early because they didn't think he'd win for best supporting actor, but he did)? He lost both of his hands, and played a handless war veteran in The Best Years of our Lives.
Good Job Josh. :)
Stop kissing up to Josh!
I'm sorry for being a nice person on the internet without expecting anything in return.
Its okay I just wanted Josh to like me more
ok... just don't get all stalker level creepy ok?
No promises
2:50 "The drummer from Def Leppard's only got one arm. The drummer from Def Leppard's only got one arm. The drummer from Def Leppard's only got one arm."
Scotty was missing a finger... you're a miracle worker Mr Scott!
There are no links on the video to go to his channel =(
You missed a really famous amputee: the great *Alessandro Zanardi*
· He won a CART championship and even raced F1
· He lost both his legs in a ChampCar race in Lausitzring (Germany)
· He returned to racing in the ETCC and WTCC and even won one race for BMW (first-ever amputee to win a FIA World-class race)
· BMW adapted a F1 so he could drive it (first-ever amputee to drive a F1 car)
· He participated in the 2012 Paralympic Games and won a gold medal

That was only 17 kiddos
Is it bad if your ads take 5 minutes to buffer? And the video hasn't loaded yet?!
