  • In this video, I show you my design for a self-watering SIP window box that has a water reservoir placed underneath. It is sub-irrigated and very easy to construct. The extra water holding capacity greatly reduces the need to water during hot, dry Summer months.
Be sure to pass this video along to your friends if you like the idea!

I had to come back to this video to THANK YOU for this information! Those wallpaper prep trays are the ONLY THINGS that's keeping my peppers in window boxes ALIVE in the 100F+ heat we're having in TX each day--sometimes upwards to 110F and over for the heat index alone. Basically I'm just using it as a drip tray after watering them each morning, and I also pour water in the bottom as well so they can have something to drink during the intense heat of the day. Each morning those trays are DRY--even with putting an inch or two of water in them. My peppers are still green, hydrated and ALIVE because of your idea, and I wanted to THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH for this!!! ❤🫑❤🌶❤

Awesome idea. Just the kind of self-watering setup I've been trying to figure out (and MUCH simpler than the other ideas I've seen). Thanks for sharing!

Just like hydroponics you might want to put an air stone in the reservoir and use an air pump to keep the water aerated. this will help prevent root rot. A thin layer of aggregate on the high side of the plant will also keep the air roots off the water AKA a thought from Kratky's method. So it would be... Starting at base soil & wick... then Aggregate... then soil at top level. Since air roots are higher than feeder roots. Just a thought. I love to experiment different ways to grow as I see you do.

I've even considered using soaker hose in the aggregate level hooked up to an air pump like aerating the soil Odds of the hose getting plugged will be very low to nil when it is covered with stone. throwing air to the air root level might be very beneficial.

The polyester rope allows wicking? Most the videos i have seen everyone says to use cotton or something else that is nachural. That is cool that you can use the polyester cord.

+Benja's Uber 1337 Hobby - Yes, I was surprised at first too. But it worked! Just another option that might come in handy. It also worked in a 5 gallon bucket SIP. :-D

Smart! Did you use "mosquito bits" in the exposed reservoir to prevent the buggers from laying eggs? Love the design except for the exposed water reservoir. Thanks for sharing and keep up the great content!

@@pcngo1: my question too. Doesn't mosquito breed on the exposed water reservoir?

Hi Al, others. I was looking on the home depot website & others to put together a list of this stuff to go buy it but found the wallpaper prep trays only come in packs of 12 at HD ($50), singles are $10 on Amazon etc. Another alternative would be to simply buy two of the window boxes (e.g. www.homedepot.com/p/Pennington-Plastic-Liner-for-30-in-Window-Box-100507830/202962887) @ $8.28 each, since they obviously stack.
Cheers. Oh Al, did you ever add this to the site? Couldn't find it. Also do you have a list of the part you use anywhere? Thanks!

Hi Simon! Thanks for watching my video & visiting my Channel. :-D Sorry for not compiling a parts list. I still haven't put this on my site either. I think I've gotten sidetracked with some larger SIP beds and such. Thanks for reminding me about this though, and for sharing some product options!

That's a mosquito-haven open water reservoir, you need to put some cover on it.
